This game suffers from respawning baddies and no time limit on the horizontal sections

With an extra life every 70k , with enough patience  (ie accumulting a massive score on the horizontal sections in order to earn lots of extra lives) anyone should be able to complete the game on one score

Big oversight on Konami's part

Indeed, just been testing this out for myself. Leeched on the first level until I got bored, and had 200k and 5 lives by the end of the first boss. I did actually die for no reason once while I was standing there leeching, so perhaps there is some kind of timer going on in the background. However, it must be in about 10 minutes or so as I was there for a while.

Anyway, carried on going through, leeched at the end of the waterfall section for a while and then again on the middle of the snow level. By the time I died (on one of those big things chucking the spiked frisbees), I had almost 500k.

Ridiculous, really, especially due to the fact that the only way I can get a better score in this game now would be through leeching.

With that in mind, and that leeching is against the rules, I call shenanigans.

It is possible to get a higher score ,and finish with more than 14 lives, all without leeching/whoring.

TG has an old score of nearly 1.4 for the mame version(contra),and a score of nearly 1.6 million for the coin op version (contra ).

But how do you get such a high score?
Are there hidden levels or something?

I fucking detest this game ... it's so fucking unfair. I really have no idea how you guys are getting such high scores. I just lobbed my xbox pad out of the window .. suppose I better go and pick it up off the lawn.

I need to punch something ...

All you need to defeat the end of level 2 boss (I assume that's where you're stuck?) is the 3 way blaster - just keep shooting up from the centre of the screen , and you destroy all the bombs floating down as well as the bad guys

The trick is to get it in the first place (pick up S) - when you've got it , avoid firing at the orange guy on the vertical sections

I don't think a game has annoyed me like this for a long time. After my poor showing at Nitro Ball though I had to do better.

... took some time out to eat go for a walk - and then fetch the pad in from the garden ...

Are these scores to stand? A couple of people, myself included, have asked how such a score as fr@ser's can be achieved, and nothing has been said. If leeching is allowed now, please let us know.

Do not get confused by the conversation about POTENTIAL leeching. Read fraser's comment:

I could demand proof in the form of an INP file, but I'm prepared to give the benefit of the doubt to Sureshot and Fr@ser that their scores were achieved without leeching. Unless anyone has any objections?

Well, check out this Contra speed-run on YouTube, where a guy completes the game with a very similar score to TK and I: http://youtube.com/watch?v=e6tXlHj6Zbg (the guy loses out points mainly from being very quick in general, and also taking down the first boss without killing the gun turrets or the guy on the top first).

Unless there is some kind of secret area or something else that we don't know about, the concerns about leeching on this thread are potentially pretty valid.

i see what you mean - deducting the 1 million points scored for killing the final boss , how does Fraser get over double your score?

From what I can see there are no hidden levels or score multipliers - but then again , maybe there are.

Regarding leeching it's a tricky subject.Should we all play the game at this speed if we are capable of it , but doing so would guarantee not getting a high score compared to someone plodding through to completion?

At the end of the day , we really should trust each other because let's face it , there's far more important things in life than finishing top of a league that has no financial reward -and if you did finish top by underhand means , there wouldn't even be any satisfaction in your acheivement

I just think that Fraser is a very good gamer - but it would be nice for him to occasionally give some advice/tips on getting these high scores , even if it was after the competition week had ended

It would definitely take away a lot of negative attention towards him in any case ;)
