Season 7 - Favourite Games

Test your might
List the games in order of enjoyment - 1 being the most, 10 being the least! A description is also nice.

1/ Gryzor - All-time classic, no-nonsense blast-'em-up which is always fun to pick up and play. However, the fact it's so damn short and the possibility for excessive leeching in the game made it a bit iffy for the league in all fairness. Still gets my top spot though.
2/ Paradroid - Surprise of the season, which I ended up playing a hell of a lot more than I thought I would. The games could take a bit too long though and it was always a pain getting killed in unavoidable situations.
3/ Gunbird 2 - As I've said before, I'm always a sucker for a good shooter. This one got another big chunk of playtime out of me, although it did get ridiculously hard later on, which was a bit offputting.
4/ Wonder Boy - Another old favourite here. The most annoying thing about it, of course, is the trial-and-error gameplay that plagues so many parts of it. Definite 10p snatcher.
5/ Twin Cobra - Solid shoot-'em-up, but nothing particularly outstanding to write home about. The firing system was a bit RSI-inducing too.
6/ Nitro Ball - My pick, and it's lingering down in the middle of the list. This is simply because I picked the game in the league's spirit - I hadn't played the game a lot so wanted to explore it more, it seemed like it would work well in a competitive environment and the presentation sold it as an exciting and interesting title. I'm glad to see that a few people enjoyed it due to these factors, but I have to say I wasn't entirely gone on it in the end.
7/ Thrust - I gave this a few goes back in the day on the BBC, and never really liked it much then. Same applies here, and I ended up getting frustrated to the point of not wanting to play any more.
8/ Trashman - I like the charm of this game and have had some enjoyment from it in the past, but the scoring system is really dodgy. Hardly gave it any time.
9/ Marvin's Maze - This one was alright, but pretty uninspiring at the end of the day. So uninspiring I made one screenshot and couldn't even get myself to submit it on here, although ET:QW must take some of the blame for that.
10/ BurgerTime - One of the kinds of games that I loathe. I put this one in the same bag as Mappy and Mr. Do's Cackpile in terms of frustration and lack of enjoyment. It's just not my thing.

I have to say, this season's games have been a pretty darn good bunch, with BuggeryTime being the only one I really feel I can lay into for being crap. Some were a bit 'meh', but the majority have been fun to play; much better than last season, I reckon.

1st - Trashman - 8 bit genius. Only got to play it for a few hours but it was great fun
2nd - Gunbird 2 - Really cool shooter
3rd - Twin Cobra - another really cool shooter, just didn't have the bells and whistles of Gunbird 2
4th - Wonderboy - Classic, not as good as I remembered, but still fun
5th - Nitroball - Mad game. At times I loved it and at times I hated it
6th - Gryzor - Not the classic that it is remembered as
7th - Burger Time - not bad, but silly scoring
8th - Marvins Maze - Enjoyed the 1st go, but got fed up of it almost instantly
9th - Thrust - Never liked it, too frustrating to be fun
Worst - Paradroid - Doesn't suit a league format, bad choice. Game may be fun, but not in competetion.

1 – Paradroid (C64) : I enjoyed this even more this time round than when I used to play it in the 80s
2 – Thrust (C64) : I hated Gravitar, but liked this a lot. A difficult, but enjoyable game.
3 – Trashman (Spectrum) : I wasn't expecting much from this, but ended up playing it quite a lot.
4 – Gunbird 2 : A good fun shoot-em-up
5 – Twin Cobra : Not quite as good as Gunbird, but still good
6 – Gryzor : I've never played this much before, and it was better than I thought it was going to be
7 – Nitro Ball : A strange game, but I enjoyed it
8 – Wonderboy : Too much of a memory game. A bit annoying in places.
9 – Marvin's Maze : I didn't like this very much. Quite annoying a lot of the time.
10 – Burger Time : Hated it.

The top three were clear leaders for me, followed by positions 4-7 that were all about as fun as each other. Only the bottom two I would have rather not played in the league.

A good season, and my best final position ever.

Its not easy...
For the first time since I joined this league, I enjoyed every game to some degree. So here are my results:

1. Wonderboy – Classic fun, easy to get into, very playable
2. Burger Time – Another classic. Frustrating but enjoyable
3. Nitroball – Bonkers, great fun.
4. Paradroid – C64 classic actually good shock! Could be annoying, but still good
5. Marvins Maze – Nice little game, never heard of it before. A nice surprise.
6. Trashman – Not one of my fave Speccy games but still good fun.
7. Thrust – Another good game, much better than Gravitar
8. Gunbird 2 – Nice shooter, a little on the tricky side
9. Twin Cobra – Pretty bog standard shooter, very tricky to do well on it
10.Gryzor – The only game I didn’t really enjoy all that much, but it was still okay.

I agree with Sureshot about the games this season - great classic ones (some of which which I didn't really give the deserved time to) and a couple of my faves. Good choices guys, let's keep it up.

Here's my ratings

1. Twin Cobra - I've always loved this game. OK it's nothing terribly special but it's fantastically playable.
2.Gryzor - Another 2-3 hours on this and I would have fininshed it (without any of that leeching which I never knew about until that week :D )
3. Marvins Maze - Fun game - excuse for not doing better was I was getting a new PC and didn't have time to play much until the Sunday morning
4. Gunbird 2 - Too hard after level 2.
5. Trashman - Classic game not enough time spent on it lol.
6. Wonderboy - Meh it's Wonderboy.
7. Nitroball - Very silly but I didn't really get into it.
8. Paradroid. Didn't spend enough time on it to appreciate this.
9. Thrust - Joystick - Window - Street below. Repeat until skint.
10. Burger Time. I watched videos :ph43r: of how to do this game and I still couldn't get anywhere.

My first season of the League, and I enjoyed it a lot.

1. Gunbird 2 - I'm not a fan of shooters, but this one kept me coming back. Great game with lots of character and variety.
2. Marvin's Maze - Simple to play, but with lots of strategy. Compulsively challenging my own high scores on this one.
3. Paradroid - First time I actually played this knowing all the rules. Lots of fun, but I wasn't very good at it.
4. Burgertime - Classic, but relies too much on one tactic to get high scores.
5. Twin Cobra - Good shooter, but lent a little too heavily on level-memorisation for my tastes.
6. Thrust - Good game, but not great for repeated attempts over a week.
7. Nitroball - Original concept and good fun, but a little limited tactically. Another one where memorisation plays a larger part than tactics.
8. Trashman - Nice concept, but flawed gameplay aspects drained the fun out of it.
9. Wonderboy - Gave it a fair shot, but it didn't change my views on the WB series. Boring and repetitive.
10. Gryzor - Actually like some of the other versions of Gryzor/Contra, but this one was crap.

Roll on next season! :D

vroom vroom !
1) Paradroid - love it, simply love it.
2) Gunbird 2 - Honest proper shooter, a great game!
3) Nitroball - Mad as a box of snakes, but I still loved it!
4) Marvin's Maze - Great game, even if I was pants at it.
5) Twin Cobra - thought I was gonna like this more ...
6) Thrust - I pulled out what little hair I had left on this.
7) Burgertime - Woeful controls but I do quite enjoy this.
8) Gryzor - meh ...
9) Wonderboy - Double meh ...
10) Trashman - Sorry, I just hated it, never liked it 1st time round and even more now so. Should do exactly with this game as the title says .... put it in the trash.

Not a bad season really, looking forward to the next! Congrats to Necronom for getting 2nd place! .. great work!

1) Thrust, one of my favourites anyway
2) Paradroid, shame I didn't get more time to paly
3) Nitro Ball, this season's "discovery", so much so I've nominated it for the next season of the Llamasoft Lleague!
4) Gunbird 2, great blaster
5) Gryzor, still too tough but a classic for the time
6) Marvin's Maze, one I'd never played before
7) Trashman, ran out of time to play more, prefer the C64 version ;)
8) Twin Cobra, Flying Shark remixed and way too tough once you die and lose your weapons
9) Burger Time, awful with a side helping of unfair sauce
10) Wonderboy, just do not enjoy it, a test of memory rather than skill

This has only been my 2nd Season but loved (almot all of) it, partly due to both my noms being chosen.

1) Paradroid - Brilliant. One of my all-time faves. Just wish I'd had more time on this one - managed nearly 50k on C64 original!
2) Twin Cobra - Sure, it isn't maybe the most original but it's colourful, well thought out and tough-without-being-cruel.
3) Trashman - Classic! Crossing the road can get frustrating sometimes but nothing (much) is perfect.
4) Gryzor - Never knew it was such a short game and hadn't played it for nigh-on 20yrs. Great memories. :)
5) Marvin's Maze - Great, simple game. Only died due to being greedy!
6) Gunbird 2 - Bullet Hell!!! Never really got going but was better than those below.
7) Nitroball - Didn't really work for me despite going back to it quite a few times.
8) Thrust - Jury is still out and likely will be for a long time.
9) Burgertime - No thanks.
10) Wonderboy - No thanks. 9 and 10 are interchangeable.

Slightly late - but...............

1 Paradroid - excellent game! Not liked by some, but I think it presented a different style of challenge.

2 Thrust - My choice, and I LOVE the game. If I weren't married, I'd shag it

3 Burgertime - Sorry, but I liked that

4. Marvins maze - erm, I liked that too

5. Wonderboy - twas ok - but not as good as my memory remembered!

6. Twin Cobra - not bad for a shooter - but others are SO much better!

7. Gryzor - Didn't like this very much.

8. Gunbird2 - looked nice, but the STUPID amount of bullets made me go 'Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh'.

9. Trashman - shitman more like! I like lots of speccy games - this was just shit.

10 Nitroball - did I play this? I have no memory of it :o

My fav's this time round, in reverse order...

10. Paradroid - What a load of old toss - Poor choice for a league game when there are so many other better games suitable for league play.

9. Thrust - Dull, frustrating pap.

8. Marvins maze - Poor Crystal Castle rip off minus the fun and trackball..

7. Twin Cobra - OK but nothing special.

6. Burger Time - I like this game, classic arcade fun.

5. Gryzor - Great game - Not aged to well though, a few years back this would be nearer the top.

4. Wonderboy - Loved it in the arcades and love it still now.

3. NitroBall - Supprise game that I enjoyed but it was flawed.

2. Trashman - Super game, far better than the crap CBM64 games pick this season.

1. GunBird 2 - What an amazing game, one of the best shooters ever played in the league.

1 - Paradroid - Really enjoyed this, very addictive little game and worked well on psp too.
2 - Gunbird 2 - Another addictive shooter with a lot of nice touches.
3 - Nitroball - Good idea for a game, really enjoyed it.
4 - Twin Cobra - Don't remember much about this but apparently I liked it.
5 - Gryzor - Will always be a classic, will always be hard.
6 - Marvins Maze - Though didn't get to play it much this was a very good game, along the lines of what pacman should've evolved into.
7 - Wonderboy - First time a game of mine's ever been picked. I'll admit it wasn't as good as I recall.
8 - Burgertime - Was ok but nothing special.
9 - Trashman - Interesting idea and played well, but ultimately dull and annoying.
10 - Thrust - I'll happily defend Gravitar, but never this monotony. :(
