Ladies and Gentlemen ... First, may I welcome you to a new season ... Now - get those trigger fingers working cuz on this 1st week we have both Robinfriday's and Sleeper77's nomination of Phoenix. I have choosen that we play the Amstar Version as this was the first version emulated via MAME. Phoenix KLOV Page ![]() Tips: * When you start the game, your fighter will be in the middle at the bottom of the screen. You will see a formation of enemy fighters at the top of the screen. This is the beginning of wave 1. A quick note about the shield. It lasts a couple of seconds and takes about five seconds to regenerate again. WAVES 1 AND 2 : 1) You will usually be attacked by multiple fighters at any one time. The movements of these fighters is pretty random. 2) In addition to dropping bombs on your fighter, Phoenix fighters also tend to try to ram your fighter. 3) After you clear out a few fighters, they will reassemble at the top of the screen. They will then move in synch with each other as they creep to the bottom of the screen. 4) Sometimes a Phoenix fighter will hover right above your ship. If you're quick, you can get off a quick shot and move away before a bomb can be dropped on you. 5) If multiple Phoenix fighters are at your level, use the shield to clear a path through them. WAVE 3 AND 4 : 1) The Phoenixes in wave 3 enter the screen in a zig-zag pattern while the Phoenixes in wave 4 arrive in a cross-over pattern of four Phoenixes per side. 2) Once they get large, they start to do erratic zig-zag patterns across the screen. At the same time, they are dropping bombs toward your fighter. Your goal is to shoot off their wings. If you do this, it forces them to go straight down until the wing regenerates. They will still be dropping bombs, but at least they will be going straight down. 3) If at all possible, try to hit the Phoenixes when they are close to your ship. Doing this gets you more points. 4) In addition, try to shoot off both wings before destroying a Phoenix for more points. WAVE 5 : 1) Your goal on this wave is to cut through the hull and shield and take out the alien inside. 2) Start firing as rapidly as you can to quickly cut through the hull. It will take quite a few shots to get to the shield. 3) The shield rotates so you will have to hit it a lot of times in order to get a wide enough hole in it to hit the alien. 4) As all of this is going on, the Spacefortress is continually descending upon your ship. In addition, the escorts are constantly harassing you. 5) A good strategy is that once you have cut a path through the hull and shield, wait for the Spacefortress to be almost on top of your ship. When you take out the alien, you will get a lot more points. 6) Destroying the escorts does not end this wave. Once you complete wave 5, the cycle begins anew. * During the game three birds will attack all in a line. Let those birds fly all the way to the bottom and start to fly back up. As they are flying up, shoot all three in a row real quick (2 or 3 seconds) and you score will elevates your score to 204,000 regardless of what your current score is - The best way to get this bonus for shooting the three birds in a line is on the second stage of level 2. The blue and pink birds in an oval shape. Just wait, not firing at the bottom of the screen. A single bird will come down, fanny around and then fly back up, then 4 birds will fly down together in a line. When they start to fly back up - blast three of them for the bonus. It works best here because of the rapid fire allowed on this and every other 2nd stage. In addition, accomplishing the trick a second time again puts your score at 204,000, even if your score was higher. As always, no autofire or cheats of any kind. 1) Leezer = 100.00 points 2) Robinfriday = 91.61 points 3) LeFosse = 77.55 points 4) Zaphod79 = 62.97 points 5) TK421 = 57.42 points 6) TodayisForgotten = 51.40 points 7) Supermario = 48.24 points 8) Sputryk = 43.20 points 9) A.J Green = 39.95 points 10) Merman = 37.12 points 11) Fairziff = 33.71 points 12) Sureshot = 31.02 points 13) Antiriad2097 = 27.76 points 14) RS200 = 24.87 points 15) Baldyman666 = 22.19 points 16) necronom = 18.49 points 17) Markopoloman = 15.94 points 18) Smurph = 12.49 points 19) Paranoid marvin = 9.18 points 20) Titch = 5.97 points |

I think thats only available on certain rom revisions - it might not be possible on this one. Edit ** I've tried it a few times and cant get it to trigger (although theres a bit of luck in getting it) - best screens to try it on are the 2nd time round either 2nd screen or boss level. |

anyone know what the relation of this game is to Exerion? The birds are EXACTLY the same. They may not look it in the pictures, but in game same exact thing. They fire the same too, only in Phoenix they fire faster.![]() ![]() |

Im not sure mate ive never played Exerion before. But looking things up Phoenix was licensed to Taito in Japan and Exerion was licensed to Taito in the US. |

Will the 204,000 point bonus be allowed? I've just checked an .inp at MARP and it should be possible to get the bonus with this rom. Personally, I'm not in favour of it since I hate these kinds of silly bonuses. I'd like to know what everyone's position is though, since if it is allowed I'll try to figure out how to get the bonus before I actually start playing the game. |

It seems a strange sort of bonus. Seems to me like it might be some sort of bug? Surely if it was a feature, they would choose a round figure. 204000 seems a very strange number if it were deliberate. |

Yeah, it's also not really a bonus since it basically replaces the score you had before getting it. Doesn't seem like an intended feature in any way. I'd say it's a bug for sure. |

8230 Leezer, to me it is not playing in the spirit of competition if you use something like that to get such a high score. Of course, we could always invoke the rule about showing an INP file to demonstrate that you really did score that many points... |

I don't see the math adding up, either, with that huge score. If we take Robin's latest post, 7x amounts to approx 56k. This is over half of the distance covered by Leez and yet amounts to only a quarter of the score. There is only a limited scope for points scoring, even allowing for 3 hits to a Big Bird and clearling the majority of the Mother Ship's hull. I've never been one for questioning anyones ability (after all, we've had Fraser, there's Today, LeFosse and Destructor who all appear more adept than us long-termers in the League on a consistent basis) but this time... Soz, Leez, but I think you need to provide evidence. Perhaps a score of just under 200k would be sufficient, everyone? After all, repeating the 'trick' if you have already scored in excess of 204k merely resets your score to 204k - the score cannot be reduced further!

ok so i "exploited" a documented easter egg, no not a bug that you all know about and have tried to get,and have to have that score deleted. so what happens if someone accidently gets the bonus ? is that score ditched as well ? like i`ve said times before the scoring system is flawed it should be points for 1st place 1 less for second etc... then maybe no-one would bitch when someone who is miles better than anyone else at a game gets stupid scores and 100 points and everyone else gets crap points. |

hmmmm ... it's a very interesting debate this. The reason why I put it in the tips section in the first place was make people aware that this "exploit" exists and really to put people on a level playing field (as I know a lot of us go hunting the interweb for tips etc when a new game is drawn). I think we have to take it on a game by game basis, But I do think that this exploit should NOT be allowed though ... kudos to you for actually getting it though, I *never* seen anyone get it apart from watching INP's! I think this exploit is nigh on impossible to get by accident isn't it? .. I have played Phoenix a billion or so times and never got it. As for the scoring system, we know this system is not foolproof but it the best one so far and one which is used week in, week out in other leagues. I'm sure the other mod and Admins would agree. |
