38,930 merman, did you really mean to nominate the Spectrum version? It's just that (apart from the fact that we've played it before) when we played this last time you had a rant about how crap it is compared to the C64 version. Anyway, a better score than last time, though because the Spectrum can't do colours, it makes it very difficult to see what's going on at times, and 90% of all my lives lost have been because of the unavoidable bombs. I shouldn't complain, as recently there have been some great seasons, but this one is one of the worst starts I can remember; a repeat, a crap game, and a repeated crap game. I hope next week is something I like (which other people will no doubt hate  )Edited by necronom, Sep 5 2010, 11:48 AM.

Couple of tips - be careful which powerups you choose , as one replaces the other. 3 ball splitter can be handy as it slows down the action cos the poor old machine kept keep up (bless it). The 'mexican hat' is a great one as you can then shppt blocks and aliens , and if picked up only replace it with the boosters (which take you to the next level) Two more tips - you can 'ram' aliens to kill them , and when you are shooting at blocks just keep the fire button held down for a constant stream of fire - dont look what ypu're shooting at , just keep your eye on the ball and your finger held on the fire button |

Actually, I didn't say the Spectrum version was bad, just that my preference was for the C64 version. We've been playing it in the Lemon64 competition so I thought I would nominate the Spectrum version here for a change. 41860

Good to get a non-MAME game....and one that's easy to emulate is also a bonus. Have had a bit of a go and got 20830....Though I seemed to be lucky on the Powerups....

54640 Only got as far as level 3 - seemed to get a lot of the 5000 bonus. When I got past level 3 and as far as level 5, only scored 50,000.  Some quick tips - As a general rule, collecting a power up will cancel any currently held power ups - the exception is when you have multiball, in which case any further power ups you will collect will affect all the balls (such as smash). Avoid the bombs dropped by the aliens. The aliens will divert your ball in a different direction, which can be useful if you are trying to get your ball into a tight space, such as level 3. You can destroy aliens by hitting them with the ball, shooting them with the gun power up, hitting them with your bat or collecting a Kill Aliens power up. If left long enough, the aliens will move off the bottom of the screen. The gun has autofire, so you can keep the fire button pressed down whilst you move. The large circles after level 2 will do nothing if they are closed, but divert the ball if they are open. The best power ups depend on the level you are on. The power ups are: Bat - extra life 5000 - 5,000 points Twin rockets - progress to next level Smash! - balls will smash through bricks (doesn't work on permanent bricks) Three ball - balls will split into three Bat with up arrow - gun Bat with left and right arrows - Extend bat Kill aliens - er...kill aliens! Hand - sticky bat - you can grab the balls Slow - slows the ball down temporarily I think that's all of them! Edited by a.j.green, Sep 6 2010, 01:24 PM.

I only completed it thanks to the rocket boost to next level Level 4 is a massive improvement. Wait til you see level 5.... Scores in this game are largely down to what power-ups you get. A few 5000 ,extra lives and level boosters make a massive difference , that's how I got my best score , usually I get 20-30k |

Is there a way of getting mouse controls on this? It's impossible with keys once the speed increases. Best I've done is 1 block left on level 3. Unless mouse support is available I think I'll pass on the rest of this week as it seems to be more about luck in getting the 5000 point bonuses than skill in catching a speeding ball with a slug of a bat. 40040

38,000 This game is a gyp the collision detection is a few pixels out on the bat an ball.. Ive been perfectly lined up and the ball has gon through the bat a number of times Get the 5k's and look for the level boosts erm and thats all you have to do to get a high score.  Completely random, will affect the scores for this week undoubtedly Ive had 29,150 on Level 1 today, but messed iit because of low flying birds and the ball veering to instant death

45,120 This is one of the most unfair games ever. I almost never get the power-ups, as you always have to be at the other side of the screen, I've only have 2 "5000 points" things appear after having about 10 games (I managed to get one of them), and level 3 is impossible without a random cheat mode dropping. No. Just no. This is really THE most unfair game I've ever played. I'm very good at breakout games in general, but I can't make a bat move faster than the game will allow and can't make it redirect at twice the speed when the ball deflects off an alien/whatever that 'on/off' thing is on level 2 and changes course 90° and speeds up. It's just horrible. Oh, and control pad controls are exactly the same, but I really don't see how pushing 2 keys for left and right is difficult, but then I've used keys all my life. Awful choice for a league game in my opinion. |
