Zaphod, the rom you linked to is US version. Both versions can be downloaded for example from coolrom and you're gonna need both, because US one is the parent rom.

There are some differences between both versions - number of levels, scoring, no starting round choice in JP version and some minor ones.

Odd - i pointed my mame just to the download folder and it allowed me to launch the japanese rom version - anyway to be clear we are playing the Japanese romset

This could be another case of a rom behaving differently in various versions of MAME (like Rambo III rom). Looking at the file sizes the rom you linked is about the same size as both of the roms I had from another source so it possibly contains files for both versions. Why it sometimes works as US version and sometimes as JP version I've no idea.

The visible features of JP version are:
- no starting round choice
- no highscore table, just one highscore at the top of the screen

My score after first couple of goes:

152,870

An entertaining variant on the Pac-Man theme.

Ah, this game has always been a favorite of mine.

And I'd forgotten how #(%&-ing irritating the controls are combined with that perspective. I've only had a couple of gos at it yet I've lost count of the number of times I've yelled "TURN, you useless moron!" at the screen.

By no means am I an expert on this game, but I'll try to give some hints:

1. After eating a certain amount of dots at each level you'll get a special item. It is unfortunately randomly chosen out of two possible items for each level. Unfortunately, because by far the most important item for high scoring is the red pill, Matrix style. Normally, when you eat power pill, first eaten ghost is worth 200 points, second 400, then 800, 1600, 3200, and each next 7650 points. After eating red pill first ghost is worth 400 points, second 1600 and each next 7650. This effect lasts until you lose life. Of other special items green pill makes Pacman move faster for a while and all the rest are just worth a certain amount of points iirc.

2. If you eat a power pill before the effects of a previous one have ended, the values of ghosts won't reset. This way with a bit of luck and/or planning you can get good scores even without the red pill, just by stringing power pills.

3. Remember that you can change movement direction in flight (multiple times). If a ghost is following you and moving faster than you, you can jump, change direction mid-air and land behind it. If you change direction once again before landing, now you will be following the ghost. This is useful if there's a second ghost coming after you but there's some space between them and you can't jump over both of them in one go.

Hope this is helpful.

I think you're playing US version mrdo. Japanese version doesn't have a highscore table.

mrdo - Have you tried downloading both roms (pacmania and pacmaniaj) from coolrom? They work at least in mame 0.148. Sorry for all the fuss with choosing Japanese version, next time I'll stick only to parent roms.

My slightly improved score:

178,240

Also, forget what I wrote about special items being randomly chosen. Maybe it worked like this in a simplified Amiga conversion I played as a kid. I always assumed it does anyway. Instead, it seems to be depending on a number of power pills you consume before getting a special item. On first round it's 0 power pills = always green pill, 1 power pill = always red pill.

No bother Macias. May have another go nearer weekend when I get more time. Good game btw.

Welcome Patbb. :) Hope you enjoy the league challenge as a whole.

Don't forget to get your 2 nominations posted in the Nomination thread. And don't forget to post a score each week for your nominations to be in the random pot for the next week's game.

Oh, and just a minor little thing. Necronom has a nifty score locator to keep the score table updated. BUT, it needs your score (and nothing else) to be posted on the first line otherwise it gets overlooked and forcing Nec to manually check. Talk all you want below, just keep the first line exclusive. Cheers!

It doesn't need to be on the first line, but it does need to be on its own line without other words before or after it, though you can use "," "." and make it bold (and I think "!" and possibly brackets). You can quote other people's scores, and it won't take it as yours, so it's fairly flexible.

And welcome to the league Patbb.

I had this for the Amiga. I thought it looked exactly the same as this, but after looking it up the Amiga version was more zoomed out.

I got 72,000 on my first life, then 0 on my second >:(

Off to play The Great Giana Sisters on the PS3, or whatever the new one is called.

Judging by some of the screenshots not everyone played JP version and not everyone started at round 1. I can only assume it was a honest mistake. Nevermind, I guess.

215,760

The first time I got to round 5 with a semi decent score. Not surprisingly arcade game is much harder than the Amiga conversion where I used to be able to beat the first loop without much trouble. It's also much more fun as first few levels on Amiga were painfully slow.

I googled the guy who's the WR holder for arcade Pac-Mania at Twin Galaxies. He also scored 3,7 million points in infinite mode. And he said in an interview that he broke 1 million points barrier after 5 months of practice, so our scores after 1 week of casual competition don't look too bad in comparison.
