I've been wanting to restore these guys but haven't made too much progress until recently. Had time off work a few weeks back so I was able to build a shelf for them and they now live in my living room. Our old house had a basement that was fairly climate controlled but the new house only has a garage - so I had to get them inside before it gets cold. But now that they're inside I want to get them restored even more. I've gotten Chuck's arms reattached (they were detached at the elbow, torn apart inside from sometime in the past) and had a new shirt made for Crusty. I still need to give Chuck his missing teeth and bow tie, and Crusty needs the design placed on his shirt. Would also like to give them a better cleaning. I also need to get some material placed behind them - right now I only have some cardboard covering the window behind them so they don't get sunlight damage. Still have Chuck's portrait frame in storage. Later on once I'm able to put them into a permanent display I'll get Chuck back in his frame and will try to have it replicated so Crusty can have his as well. This is the progress so far. I'll post more photos in this thread as things move along ![]() ![]() |

I just realized there were posts here that I hadn't replied to, so sorry for the delay on that. There probably won't be any video of the restoration because that would require either it being done at once, or a ton of little snippets to have to stitch together. The problem is I'm having to do everything in little pieces here and there where I can fit it in - between my work schedule and having a two year old my free time is sporadic. I haven't done too much lately since this last photo was taken. Actually haven't even had a chance to build the curtain to go behind them. But as far as getting them running I don't think that's in the plans. Unfortunately the latex is much too fragile and getting them moving (especially the mouths) might cause irreparable damage. I lifted my little girl up there to say hello to them the other day, since she calls them by name and points to them. Well she's fast and grabbed at Chuck E's nose and managed to damage the latex slightly - she just caught a "bubble" where the latex had deteriorated and her finger pressed it in. Nothing a little touch of black paint didn't fix, but it just goes to show how delicate that 36 year old latex is. As for the Jasper and Pasqually junked by corporate in 2004 - those were the originals from 1977. I don't believe that they received upgrades like Chuck E and Crusty did. They had more unique builds and movements (Jasper with the banjo and Pasqually holding onto the doors he was behind) whereas Chuck E. and Crusty were similar to the guest characters which had been developed already into more advanced bots. We've compared the photos of the ones corporate had to the original '77 promo photos and they match - Jasper even had the exact same spots on his snout. |

Why not make new 1977 style Jasper and Pasqually robots using photos as guides? |

It wouldn't be the same, plus I think we only know a few of their movements (ex: Pasqually opening his door)

There were at least 3 portrait Chucks. Are you sure that's the same bot? The one in the pic has furry hands. Then again, they may have cut them off and retrofitted him with latex hands when they dropped the cigar. |

VN, given the recent experience with Chuck's nose, I'd recommend considering putting him in a locked case. I'm sure your daughter is well-behaved, but she could unintentionally do a lot of damage in just a few seconds. Knew a guy with some very expensive toys that got ruined that way when the babysitter accidentally left a door open. Would hate to hear the same kind of thing happened because she got the idea to shake Chuck's hand or something. There's only one of him, and better safe than sorry. BTW, there are companies that specialize in preserving and restoring old latex masks and movie props. If visible deterioration like splitting or crumbling becomes an issue, you may want to check that out. At least Crusty doesn't look like he has any latex parts. |

Unfortunately, he does as well... At least his hands and ears are latex like Chuck. I'm betting they also just put fur over his latex face too. However I'm still glad Chuck's in a better place now cause I would've never been able to restore it let alone have space for it.

Yep Crusty's head is almost entirely made of latex, just covered in fur. It's actually a little more fragile than Chuck E.'s head, as the fiberglass skull isn't in the shape of his full head - the black points on the side of Crusty's head are hollow and if you squeeze them, there's just a pocket of air in there. Also they're about as protected as they can be without encasing them behind glass. The original photo may have been a little misleading from the angle, but they're on a shelf that's well outside of Shalisa's reach. I tried to get them as close to the ceiling as possible for that very reason. She only had access because I held her up to them, so that was more my fault than hers. Hopefully in a year and a half I can get them properly put on display in a wall (with the portrait frames) the way they were intended to be displayed.

If the latex is that fragile, removing the cosmetics might cause damage. BTW (in response to a previous post) VegaNova's is not the 1977 Chuck bot. This is the original: ![]() Before anyone asks, what happened to it is unknown. |

This is the 1978 Chuck E. from the 2nd store on Kooser Road that opened on November 1978 The one Mr. VegaNova has is an updated version of the 1977 bot from the first store most likely made late 1977 or early 1978 before the 2nd store opened. Edited by CEC1Fan, Dec 29 2014, 01:24 AM.
