I've been wanting to restore these guys but haven't made too much progress until recently. Had time off work a few weeks back so I was able to build a shelf for them and they now live in my living room. Our old house had a basement that was fairly climate controlled but the new house only has a garage - so I had to get them inside before it gets cold. But now that they're inside I want to get them restored even more. I've gotten Chuck's arms reattached (they were detached at the elbow, torn apart inside from sometime in the past) and had a new shirt made for Crusty. I still need to give Chuck his missing teeth and bow tie, and Crusty needs the design placed on his shirt. Would also like to give them a better cleaning. I also need to get some material placed behind them - right now I only have some cardboard covering the window behind them so they don't get sunlight damage. Still have Chuck's portrait frame in storage. Later on once I'm able to put them into a permanent display I'll get Chuck back in his frame and will try to have it replicated so Crusty can have his as well. This is the progress so far. I'll post more photos in this thread as things move along ![]() ![]() |

There's a good chance that if there were commercials shot that showed the portrait mechs, that the footage is lost by this point. |

I can. Camcorders didn't exist back then. There were video cameras, but they had to connect to a VCR to record. So they were mostly used by professionals. I'm betting any video that might exist was for commercials or local news broadcasts unless it was 8mm home movie footage of some kid's birthday party there. Then it would probably be like most of the videos taken by non-fans at modern CEC stores where they focus on the kid running around. I'm sure we'd learn a lot regardless, but yeah. Not surprised video footage is nonexistant. I think the earliest video I've seen from one of the restaurants is the one from the store in Tempe, AZ. |

I'm inexperienced with Chuck E Cheese. Do the 1977 bots move, or are they just models? |

They've always been able to move. The original Chuck bot could move the eyes, eyelids, mouth and the right arm. |

One thing I'm curious about is if there was an even earlier version of the Jasper bot. The original Chuck was fixed to a flat surface, but all the pics of Jasper I've seen are a full 3D figure. |

Aaron turned on the Wolf Pack 5 which is from 1978. So maybe he can at least hook up some air pressure to these guys and test them out. |

Aaron doesn't need to worry about the condition of the latex on the Wolfpack 5 because he can make new masks if necessary. The masks on Chuck and Crusty would be much more difficult to replace. If the latex is soft enough that just touching it causes damage, the movement of the mechanics could easily rip it apart. |

Well, there's a point where latex can no longer be reinforced or repaired. Personally, I wouldn't chance it in this case if it were me. |

Yeah, and while one could recast the mask by making a mold of the preexisting mask in certain situations, that's next to impossible with these: I'd assume Crusty is "flocked", or has fur fabric glued onto his mask, and I'm not sure to what extent Chuck's mask is latex, although I'd assume it'd probably be next to impossible to make a mold of his as well to start with.

Not a lot of people had cameras back then. I'm sure there is some lost footage of a news segment about them. We will just have to wait until it one appears. There probably is hundreds of tapes that are lost. People who have tapes of the Wolf Pack, HLB, and Confederate Critter Show, just stuck in there basement, waiting to be found. I'm sure we'll find footage soon.
