I don't know much about it either. What I do know is it used to be some sort of a maze underneath the balcony stages that kids could climb through with strobe lights and stuff. If I missed anything or messed a fact up that's all I know so you people who know all this stuff can help me out lol

"Mr. Munch's Magic Madhouse" was a maze underneath the Balcony Stage, with entrances under Munch and Pasqually. The tunnels had strobe lights and other effects inside. Most locations sealed them off by the late 80's, because of kids and teenagers smoking and making out inside the tunnels, which were too small for employees to manage effectively. Are there any pictures of the inside of it? It was probably impractical to take pictures in there given what types of cameras were available at the time but I'm just curious, it sounds like a really fun idea aside from the safety hazards and stuff. |

I would be really surprised if there are any pictures available. The maze and room were really difficult for adults to fit inside because the ceiling was so low. Cameras were pretty delicate and expensive back then, so most adults in their right mind wouldn't trust a little kid with one unless they could be right there. Plus film wasn't cheap either, and it would have been difficult to take a decent picture in the small, dark room. My local PTT had one, so I can tell you about it. The lighting in the tunnels was by strobe. It was the first time I'd ever encountered a strobe light, and I was fascinated by the frozen-in-time movement effect. Inside the center room they had a black light activated by token, and the side walls had phosphorescent paint or wallpaper that glowed when you activated it. I think it had images of the characters on it, but not 100% sure on that. The back wall was painted with short-duration glow-in-the-dark paint, so when you activated the light and pressed yourself against it you would leave an impression of your shadow on the wall for a short time. It sounds fun, but I can understand why they sealed it off. It doesn't sound very safe. If a kid needed help the staff or parents would have a hard time getting to them in time. |

I had one in Milwaukee, too, and my dad (who was 5'9" and skinny as a bean pole) had to cram in there. He only did it once. I don't recall much about it. As far as my memories go, it was just a short tunnel lit with normal lights that ended in the slide picture I posted in another thread, which was only about 3 feet high. There was also a window under Chuck that you could see into the dining area. It might have been significantly less boring than that, but I don't trust anything else I might add to it, since I could be conflating it with any number of other places from my childhood. Based on the pics I posted, mine was probably a bit longer than the standard, because it looks like the entrance was off to the side past the Warblettes, and the slide was under the clap board, which we've determined here was separated from that side of the show by the band board. |

Hello everyone this is my first post to the forum. Pleased to meet you. My earliest Chuck E. Cheese memories are from 1984-1985 in Virginia just outside D.C. and also outside and in Syracuse, NY. I do recall Mr. Munch's maze but at this time and place the area underneath the stage was decorated like a giant cheese wedge. There seems to be the same decoration in the Phoenix, AZ clip from 1984 as seen on YouTube and it is some of the best balcony-era footage I've seen. The interior also had a cheese wedge motif and there were pictures of the characters inside. The main 'area' was a small, boxy room that an adult could barely enter, maybe 4 1/2 feet high and six feet long/wide. It was connected by a few substantially long tunnels (think the length of the balcony stage) and a few other small rooms. There were small black lights that accentuated the portraits on the wall but I do not recall a strobe light and imagine it could be a hazard in a small maze filled with unsupervised children. As a small child I loved running around in there but it was a nightmare for adults. And the novelty was over quickly for anyone over the age of 5. It largely depended on if the other kids were nice and friendly or bullies. I remember my grandma being seriously pissed off about the maze and it was a big reason she stopped taking us there by herself. |

The Madhouse was awesome because it was so weird in there with the backlight and the flashing strobe light. |

A maze under the balcony stage in some stores. It was pretty neat and unusual back then. In the early 80s I bet not many kids had seen strobe lights. No way they would put something like that in a kids' place now, though. They would probably be worried about epilepsy and lawsuits. |

I was never in one of those Mr. Munch's Madhouse things and I really want to see what one looked like. Well I'll check that thread to see if it has pictures. You know, of the inside.

Go buy a strobe light, and a black light at Spencer's Gifts. Turn them on at opposite ends of the room. That's about it.
