I grew up near Seattle in the early 80s, where we had both CEC and SPP. By the time Showbiz arrived in the area around 1983, CEC restaurants had been open for a few years and the brand was firmly entrenched in the local consciousness. I remember Showbiz running an attack ad with someone dancing around in a goofy Chuck lookalike suit, but I don't recall any other details. At the time the CEC commercials always used the suit when Chuck appeared on camera, so the ad may have been a sort of parody. It stuck out in my mind because I really liked going to the local PTT (which had the best arcade for miles around) and at the time no one here had ever heard of Showbiz. I've never liked negative advertising, and even as a kid it kind of offended me. Anyone else remember it or have video? It may have only run in contested markets. So would I. I'd probably think it was pretty funny now. I know I didn't dream it up, because I was poking around on Google looking for reviews on the RAE documentary and saw someone on another board mention it. Wish I had kept the link. It's too bad there aren't more PTT/SPP commercials from the really early days available online. I know there were more of them made. In the late 70s, early 80s VCRs were very expensive, so few people had them. Even those that did tended to pause recording on the commercials because the tapes cost an arm and a leg too. |

It would be really cool to see that commercial. I find those types of commercials pretty funny and interesting to watch. Companies like Burger King and Pepsi did it all the time in the 80's (And still do it every now and then). But yeah, it would be great to see Showbiz giving Chuck E. a hard time in a commercial. Haha!

That would be cool to see. Attack ads like those can be pretty funny to watch, like those old Sega ads attacking Nintendo. Attack ads are rare nowadays though, outside of the occasional political campaign ad. |

I had never heard about this. Usually, when companies did this back in the day, it was because one wanted to look better than the other. One that came to mind was a commercial for Apple Computers referencing the George Orwell novel 1984 in response to IBM controlling the computer industry and the fact that Apple was putting out a computer that year. But, with Showbiz and the Pizza Time Theatre, it was kind of like that, in all honesty. Animation historians explain that Disney was like classical music, where as the Looney Tunes were like jazz. Well, Chuck E. was the brodway style, and the RAE were using more modern music, so it is kind of close in that regard. |

CEC was very 1940's. While RAE was more 1960's. |

Well, yeah. That was the point. Pretty much from time Showbiz launched up until the merger the two companies fought like cats and dogs. They were suing each other practically the whole time. |
