Since I plan on restoring Chuck, I figured it was time to make a thread. First post is more of a record of where I'm starting from.![]() The good: He has all his body cosmetics. They're in great shape. Has all his cylinders and a valve bank. Parts seem to be in good working order. The bad: Mech is missing the right forearm and hand. Whites of the eyes are marked and discolored. Irises are chipped, scratched and also mismatched. No nose. No lower lip. No tongue. Is that white thing supposed to be teeth? The unknown: Status of cylinders, valves and other mechanics. (No compressor or controller to test those yet.) Working on either getting the old right forearm/hand from the previous owner or a replacement from another member. Eyes are really important to a character, whether they're 2D or 3D. Here are Chuck's. ![]() Now you know why I've taken most pics with his eyes closed. I think the iris on the left eye is newer, or at least intended for a different bot. It's a different size, and the lines are painted in white. The pupil is off center too. I'm hoping to find a replacement that matches the smaller one on the right eye. Lots of wear on both from the eyelids rubbing against the surface and taking the paint off. My plan is to fill the chipped areas with epoxy putty, then sand smooth and repaint. Eyes I can keep shut, but the nose and teeth stick out all the time. Still waiting on most materials, but I got tired of looking at the pull tab hanging from his mouth and made him some new teeth from some imitation leather. I looked at pictures and guessed on the size and shape, but I think they turned out pretty good. Even though he still looks weird without a nose, the new teeth make him look much better already. ![]() On figures of this age, they used French stretch terry fabric to cover his nose, snout, jaw and lower lip. The tongue was made from satin. The previous owner reupholstered his snout and jaw, but didn't use the same type of cloth. Unfortunately, stretch terry is not easy to find except online. The pink fabric looks fine so I'll leave that for now until I can find the correct fabric. My plan is to give him a new nose and recreate the lower lip and tongue. I ordered black and red stretch terry from fabrics.com. Hopefully they should arrive next week. There should be plenty of fabric left over if I have to redo them if/when I find the correct pink cloth. I hope to work on him a little each day. |

Unfortunately I only have her mask. She is missing her jaw, fur/coat and gloves. Same for Oink and Dolli, though I did get Dolli's body foam and I'm missing the back of Oink's head. The guy has a lot of stuff in his shed, so maybe the rest is buried in there somewhere. I'm going to try to recreate the rest of Harmony's outfit. Dolli's should be relatively simple. I'm not sure if I can do Oink since she had the foam bust like Helen. Still a long way off, though. |

Well, time to start on my second Chuck bot. My plan is to eventually make a YouTube series where smartass PTT Chuck hosts a talk/variety show and gives his snarky opinions. I will probably end up keeping both sets of cosmetics and use the ones I got Sunday for Chuck's relatives. So I will be giving the second bot the restoration treatment. Given his future use, and to keep him straight from my original Chuck bot I'll be calling him Charlie. Just like the first post, here's an overview on what needs fixing. ![]() He looked clean in the bright sunlight when we picked up the show, but here you can see how dirty he really is. Check out the color difference between the area that was covered by the vest and the rest of him. He needs a bath. Charlie also has a lot of holes, something I really didn't have to deal with on Chuck. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Someone also got happy with the hot glue gun. I can tell he was wearing the Dracula costume not long before the store closed, because some of it is still stuck to his face. ![]() So Charlie got naked on his second day at my house. Must be some kind of record. ![]() As you can see, he has the old-school pipe construction. He was made at the same time as Slappy's bot, and they look very similar. I feel like I'm starting over.

I like the Youtube series idea, 80sgirl. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress on restoring the new bots too. You did such a good job with your first Chuck. |

If you do do a Charlie-Chuck thing with them in the same room, Charlie should have a John W voice while Chuck has a Scott Voice. |

Well, the eyes and eyelids were frozen in place. So I took his eyes apart and found the grease on the cylinders had solidified into a hard mass that was keeping them from moving. So after chipping that away and getting them unstuck, I went to air him up and found one of his air pressure regulators is busted. He's also missing a few minor pieces of hardware I'm sure I can find at a local hardware store that specializes in fasteners. I still wanted to test the cylinders and valves, so I jury-rigged an air line from the regulators on Chuck's board. I was happy to find all his cylinders and valves are working. Mechanically Charlie's mech is in much better condition than Chuck's was. Probably because he was not in service for as long. Everything I've seen indicates this store closed around 1986, which means Charlie was only in service for about 5 years as opposed to 20+ years for Chuck (even if he is a parts bot.) Sorry, missed your question earlier. I have the front part of Oink's mask, but unfortunately that's all we could find of her. I don't think the seller has any of her other cosmetics. I have Dolli's head and the foam used in her body but that's it. I suspect the rest of her cosmetics are in there somewhere. This guy has a HUGE shed filled with hundreds of boxes he inherited from his dad and even he doesn't know what he has. Slappy has an extra pair of ears in rough condition, so I will use them as a model to make new ones. His Dolli's foam is falling apart, so I will send it to him. I am going to make a more accurate jaw for Chuck using Charlie's as a model, but it's not going to be a priority. The one he has works right now, and I want to find some fabric that matches the original terry as closely as possible before I start on another jaw so I can redo his snout at the same time. As for Jasper and the Warblettes, I'm sure they went to other owners at the liquidation auction when the store closed. The seller said what probably happened was his dad saw Jasper and the Warblettes sold and decided he wanted the rest. Unfortunately, the chances of finding them are slim. Eventually, yes. Because the deal was I got Charlie, the band boards, the signage, the extra character cosmetics and anything extra the seller might find. Besides, Dolli's head will fit on a guest mech, and wouldn't it be hilarious to have him appear on camera with Chuck? I could see her hitting on him, and there's lots of comedy value there. |

Yes! Dolli and Chuck E.! I approve of this idea! Someday I'd love to see Chuck E. and Charles duet together. That would be interesting.

Oh god, two rats singing badly together sounds hilarious. One with a Jersey accent and the other with an Australian accent. Anyway, small update on Charlie. The lubricant on his eye and eyelid cylinders had solidified into a hard mass. Even WD-40 didn't help. I had to take his eyes apart to get it chipped off. Once he was apart I found he is missing a washer in his eye bar, and a cotter pin that holds the mouth cylinder to the head. I was all set to air him up and then found one of the air pressure regulators was broken. All very minor fixes. I really wanted to test his cylinders and valves, so I pulled the solenoid board off of Chuck and rigged up the air lines so I could attach the regulator assembly from his board to Charlie's solenoids. I am happy to report all of Charlie's valves and cylinders are working. Mechanically he is in much better shape than Chuck was when I got him. Probably because he wasn't in service nearly as long. |

Right now the only one I have is Dolli. Dolli should be relatively easy to complete, since her outfit is rather simple. |

Quick question, does Chuck(now Charles) normally have blue eye lids? And if other Chuck's mech was a guest's, why does he have 'gray' eyelashes instead of black or something? |
