Since I plan on restoring Chuck, I figured it was time to make a thread. First post is more of a record of where I'm starting from.![]() The good: He has all his body cosmetics. They're in great shape. Has all his cylinders and a valve bank. Parts seem to be in good working order. The bad: Mech is missing the right forearm and hand. Whites of the eyes are marked and discolored. Irises are chipped, scratched and also mismatched. No nose. No lower lip. No tongue. Is that white thing supposed to be teeth? The unknown: Status of cylinders, valves and other mechanics. (No compressor or controller to test those yet.) Working on either getting the old right forearm/hand from the previous owner or a replacement from another member. Eyes are really important to a character, whether they're 2D or 3D. Here are Chuck's. ![]() Now you know why I've taken most pics with his eyes closed. I think the iris on the left eye is newer, or at least intended for a different bot. It's a different size, and the lines are painted in white. The pupil is off center too. I'm hoping to find a replacement that matches the smaller one on the right eye. Lots of wear on both from the eyelids rubbing against the surface and taking the paint off. My plan is to fill the chipped areas with epoxy putty, then sand smooth and repaint. Eyes I can keep shut, but the nose and teeth stick out all the time. Still waiting on most materials, but I got tired of looking at the pull tab hanging from his mouth and made him some new teeth from some imitation leather. I looked at pictures and guessed on the size and shape, but I think they turned out pretty good. Even though he still looks weird without a nose, the new teeth make him look much better already. ![]() On figures of this age, they used French stretch terry fabric to cover his nose, snout, jaw and lower lip. The tongue was made from satin. The previous owner reupholstered his snout and jaw, but didn't use the same type of cloth. Unfortunately, stretch terry is not easy to find except online. The pink fabric looks fine so I'll leave that for now until I can find the correct fabric. My plan is to give him a new nose and recreate the lower lip and tongue. I ordered black and red stretch terry from fabrics.com. Hopefully they should arrive next week. There should be plenty of fabric left over if I have to redo them if/when I find the correct pink cloth. I hope to work on him a little each day. |

Yes. There is rust on his fingers and some of his fittings too. The store closed due to a sprinkler flood and apparently no one took their cosmetics off to let them dry out. |

I've wondered why he only has rust on his hands and a few fittings on his right arm. Maybe most of him was protected from the water and only part of him got really wet. |

It's still there. It's just a small amount of surface rust so it doesn't affect anything. One of these days I might get rid of it (there is stuff that you can buy that will remove rust) but since it isn't hurting anything I just left it. |

Maybe like some people have a green thumb charlie has a rusty hand all jokes aside its a bit of a mystery why only his hand rusted a bit

Rust will slowly eat through the metal so you should consider it removing it. The sooner the better. Give it an anti corrosion coating as well!. |

Only if it stays wet. It's dry here so he's in no danger of falling apart. At some point I'm going to replace his metal fingers, though. They're made from metal strapping tape so it shouldn't be too hard to find materials. The only bad thing is you have to order a bunch and I only need like two feet. |

Chuck's jaw is a reproduction. The cosmetics came from a storage unit find in either Tennessee or Kentucky. There were two sets of bots and neither Chuck had a jaw. I was never able to figure out which stores the stuff came from. Chuck's mech is made up of parts of Helen and Munch from the show at the big store in San Jose. Charlie has a known history. He came from the Redwood City, CA store. It was a big two-story building with the showroom on the bottom floor and the arcade up top. Sometime in the mid-to-late 80s the store was in the process of being sold to the owner of the Tully Road store when a kid took out a sprinkler head somewhere and tripped the fire suppression system. No one at the store knew how to turn the system off and by the time someone who did arrived the bottom floor was flooded under two feet of water. The owners didn't want to spend the money to reopen, so the store closed and everything went to public auction. The guy who sold the show's dad was a wealthy and eclectic collector and attended said auction. He bought everything he could on a whim. In 2007 he passed away and the son inherited the property and slowly started selling off the stuff. |

That's right, I'm sorry. I was thinking that they ended up with CaptSlappy since 2007 was the year which he began restoration on his Balcony show. |
