Since I plan on restoring Chuck, I figured it was time to make a thread. First post is more of a record of where I'm starting from.![]() The good: He has all his body cosmetics. They're in great shape. Has all his cylinders and a valve bank. Parts seem to be in good working order. The bad: Mech is missing the right forearm and hand. Whites of the eyes are marked and discolored. Irises are chipped, scratched and also mismatched. No nose. No lower lip. No tongue. Is that white thing supposed to be teeth? The unknown: Status of cylinders, valves and other mechanics. (No compressor or controller to test those yet.) Working on either getting the old right forearm/hand from the previous owner or a replacement from another member. Eyes are really important to a character, whether they're 2D or 3D. Here are Chuck's. ![]() Now you know why I've taken most pics with his eyes closed. I think the iris on the left eye is newer, or at least intended for a different bot. It's a different size, and the lines are painted in white. The pupil is off center too. I'm hoping to find a replacement that matches the smaller one on the right eye. Lots of wear on both from the eyelids rubbing against the surface and taking the paint off. My plan is to fill the chipped areas with epoxy putty, then sand smooth and repaint. Eyes I can keep shut, but the nose and teeth stick out all the time. Still waiting on most materials, but I got tired of looking at the pull tab hanging from his mouth and made him some new teeth from some imitation leather. I looked at pictures and guessed on the size and shape, but I think they turned out pretty good. Even though he still looks weird without a nose, the new teeth make him look much better already. ![]() On figures of this age, they used French stretch terry fabric to cover his nose, snout, jaw and lower lip. The tongue was made from satin. The previous owner reupholstered his snout and jaw, but didn't use the same type of cloth. Unfortunately, stretch terry is not easy to find except online. The pink fabric looks fine so I'll leave that for now until I can find the correct fabric. My plan is to give him a new nose and recreate the lower lip and tongue. I ordered black and red stretch terry from fabrics.com. Hopefully they should arrive next week. There should be plenty of fabric left over if I have to redo them if/when I find the correct pink cloth. I hope to work on him a little each day. |

I think the point has been made to Tweetsie. Any more than what's already been said is just yelling at a child at this point. They probably get it, you've made you point, stop yelling at the kid. I'm pretty sure that's why they haven't responded. All asides, Chuck is looking amazing! You're a miracle worker with these old guys. I can't wait to see where things go from here. |

For those not on Instagram, Chuck got his old threads back. It does need a little bit of cleaning, but I couldn't resist putting it on him. So here's a before and after shot:![]() ![]() Yes, it is the same tux. Edited by 80sgirl, Aug 9 2016, 12:14 AM.

I traded some stuff to a friend for it. I love how the foam pool noodles filled out his upper arms as opposed to the older pic where they're all baggy and wrinkly. It looks like it was made to fit him now.

Yes, I plan on changing between his different outfits. I have four total at the moment. The classic vest I made for him, the bandstand vest, the patriotic vest and now the tux. The bandstand and patriotic vests were part of the California deal and came with Charlie.
I don't think they've ever made paper dryer vent tubing. The risk of fire would be too great. AFAIK it's always been made out of metal or plastic. The stuff on Chuck was plastic ribbed tubing and his original owner said it was not original so I threw it away.
Agreed. Unfortunately none have surfaced though. The original was screen printed, but one of these days I'd like to take a stab at making one from pieces now that I have some official vests to take measurements from. I think it could be done using quilting techniques to make the checkered pattern. |

Well, I meant none have surfaced since I made that post. That checkered vest is actually owned by Jenn. She was just at Slappy's house when those pics of his bot wearing it were taken. |

In the pic of Charlie, you mean? Yes, it's a Happy Birthday sign that hung over the doorway of the special party room at Redwood City. Not many stores had specific rooms reserved for parties, so it took forever to find out what it was actually used for. Now that I have a lighting setup that doesn't totally suck, at some point I'm going to retake photos of the other stuff I got from the show deal. |

Since Chuck is going to be used as a guest, what are you going to do with his cosmetics? Because if you're gonna keep them, I'll willingly do the research to find the proper stretch terrycloth for Chuck's snout. Also real quick, what is Chuck's tongue, red lip, and the black part of his mouth made out of? Edited by Mr. Ruxpin, Aug 15 2016, 07:48 PM.

Thanks for the offer. I'm interested in seeing if you can come up with any solutions. I am keeping his cosmetics to use on the Charlie mech. Charlie's cosmetics needed a lot of stitching up and I'd rather not subject them to regular use. His lip is made from the same type of cloth as his snout. It is single-sided, two-way stretch terry. The latter means it should be able to stretch both on the latitudinal and longitudinal axis. Be careful because some sources call the terry that will only stretch in one direction two-way and both directions four-way. The loops should only be on one side of the fabric, not on both sides like on towels and washcloths. This is important to get it to lay right when stretched. "French" stretch terry is not the same thing. If you can find white I might be able to dye it the correct color. His tongue is made from satin and the black part is made from felt. Both easily obtainable. |

How does this work? I know it's terry but I'm not really sure... Says it has the terrycloth pattern on the other side. https://www.fabric.com/buy/0451246/french-terry-neon-pink- Edited by Mr. Ruxpin, Aug 18 2016, 07:07 PM.

Not stretchy enough. Only 15% stretch along one axis. From what I've found the stuff that is closest is usually marketed specifically as stretch terry. |
