Since I plan on restoring Chuck, I figured it was time to make a thread. First post is more of a record of where I'm starting from.![]() The good: He has all his body cosmetics. They're in great shape. Has all his cylinders and a valve bank. Parts seem to be in good working order. The bad: Mech is missing the right forearm and hand. Whites of the eyes are marked and discolored. Irises are chipped, scratched and also mismatched. No nose. No lower lip. No tongue. Is that white thing supposed to be teeth? The unknown: Status of cylinders, valves and other mechanics. (No compressor or controller to test those yet.) Working on either getting the old right forearm/hand from the previous owner or a replacement from another member. Eyes are really important to a character, whether they're 2D or 3D. Here are Chuck's. ![]() Now you know why I've taken most pics with his eyes closed. I think the iris on the left eye is newer, or at least intended for a different bot. It's a different size, and the lines are painted in white. The pupil is off center too. I'm hoping to find a replacement that matches the smaller one on the right eye. Lots of wear on both from the eyelids rubbing against the surface and taking the paint off. My plan is to fill the chipped areas with epoxy putty, then sand smooth and repaint. Eyes I can keep shut, but the nose and teeth stick out all the time. Still waiting on most materials, but I got tired of looking at the pull tab hanging from his mouth and made him some new teeth from some imitation leather. I looked at pictures and guessed on the size and shape, but I think they turned out pretty good. Even though he still looks weird without a nose, the new teeth make him look much better already. ![]() On figures of this age, they used French stretch terry fabric to cover his nose, snout, jaw and lower lip. The tongue was made from satin. The previous owner reupholstered his snout and jaw, but didn't use the same type of cloth. Unfortunately, stretch terry is not easy to find except online. The pink fabric looks fine so I'll leave that for now until I can find the correct fabric. My plan is to give him a new nose and recreate the lower lip and tongue. I ordered black and red stretch terry from fabrics.com. Hopefully they should arrive next week. There should be plenty of fabric left over if I have to redo them if/when I find the correct pink cloth. I hope to work on him a little each day. |

Some are in such bad condition or missing so many parts restoring them is just not feasible. Their best use is as parts donors for other bots in better condition. I suspect a lot of the RAE bots that have come up for sale recently on eBay are beyond the point of restoring, but that's the owners' call. This bot's problems are fixable, so he'll be running again. Hopefully soon. |

Can you tell Vega Nova that i want dance party 1999 showtape on Showbizpizza.com? I use all mp4 converters and nothing works when I burn it. Show biz Pizza stuff works perfectly fine. Edited by Mr. Cheese, Jun 5 2015, 10:36 PM.

I like all the pictures. It really gives a good view of the endoskeleton mech of the PTT bots. I've shown them to a few people I know in real life who were curious about animatronics. It's awesome that your library has 3D printers. No library I know of has anything that cool in it. I've only ever seen one 3D printer in a high-end computer store in my area. Sounds like he's gonna be looking like his good old self in no time. Was his head hard to take off? |

The front part of his head is held on by standoff bolts that align with holes in the mech. You just screw on a hex bolt and washer on the other side. The designers tried to keep the hardware and fittings on the bots standard so they would be easy to replace. Most of them are still in use today. Which is a good thing because his eyelids are held to the cylinder with a pin and pair of C-lock washers and even though I thought I had a good grip on it one of them went pwinging off to parts unknown. I have the worst luck with those things. Fortunately Lowe's had them for about $0.65 apiece. I ended up buying about half a dozen just in case. Edited by 80sgirl, Jun 6 2015, 04:55 AM.

I don't know what's different about that Chuck's face, but I REALLY LIKE IT. edit: i think its that its smaller in proportion to the body and his ears are erect. also i like his happy little jig arms too Edited by Poprock Balboa, Jun 6 2015, 07:37 PM.

I don't think his body is really smaller. It looks like the body fur isn't fastened in the back so it's just hanging open on the sides, making his body look fatter and taller than it is. Where did this pic come from, BTW? |

The Cheesevention X FB Page when they were setting up. The Front might not have been fastened to the back, though. |

I meant the head is smaller in proportion to the body. Did I make a typo? Whoops if I did! If you made a typo [i think you meant head?] his cheeks don't touch the edges of his shoulders it doesn't look like, which yours appears to? I think you're right, it's not smaller, but it looks smaller. That's why it looks more appealing, I guess! also his ears are dumbo rat ears and thats just nice Edited by Poprock Balboa, Jun 6 2015, 08:04 PM.

If you measure proportions using the head height from the neck to the bottom of the body fur piece, the cosmetics have the same proportions as mine. The irises also look a lot bigger. They're probably from a full-body bot. This isn't really a bot though. I can tell by looking at the base and the way his arms are posed. It looks like Chuck's cosmetics on some kind of frame. Yeah, you're right. I'm really bad with sighting proportions without measuring them! The point is, that way the cosmetics are making it look, it looks really nice, haha. Yeah, that does look like a frame. Edited by Poprock Balboa, Jun 6 2015, 08:21 PM.

Yeah, his ears don't stay up on their own though. They don't have any wire in them or anything. The hat was what made them stand up. Even in vintage pics/videos taken during showtapes where he wore alternate outfits with no hat have him with floppy ears. These must have been tied or pinned. But speaking of bots... Nasty old paint coming off! ![]() Hope to repaint them tomorrow. |

It's good the eyes are actually getting fixed! It must have been years of rat glaucoma, haha. I'm sure you'll do way better than the person they paid to do em. |

Good job on restoring him so far. Though I'm pretty sure it's against the forum rules to post naked rats... |
