Since I plan on restoring Chuck, I figured it was time to make a thread. First post is more of a record of where I'm starting from.![]() The good: He has all his body cosmetics. They're in great shape. Has all his cylinders and a valve bank. Parts seem to be in good working order. The bad: Mech is missing the right forearm and hand. Whites of the eyes are marked and discolored. Irises are chipped, scratched and also mismatched. No nose. No lower lip. No tongue. Is that white thing supposed to be teeth? The unknown: Status of cylinders, valves and other mechanics. (No compressor or controller to test those yet.) Working on either getting the old right forearm/hand from the previous owner or a replacement from another member. Eyes are really important to a character, whether they're 2D or 3D. Here are Chuck's. ![]() Now you know why I've taken most pics with his eyes closed. I think the iris on the left eye is newer, or at least intended for a different bot. It's a different size, and the lines are painted in white. The pupil is off center too. I'm hoping to find a replacement that matches the smaller one on the right eye. Lots of wear on both from the eyelids rubbing against the surface and taking the paint off. My plan is to fill the chipped areas with epoxy putty, then sand smooth and repaint. Eyes I can keep shut, but the nose and teeth stick out all the time. Still waiting on most materials, but I got tired of looking at the pull tab hanging from his mouth and made him some new teeth from some imitation leather. I looked at pictures and guessed on the size and shape, but I think they turned out pretty good. Even though he still looks weird without a nose, the new teeth make him look much better already. ![]() On figures of this age, they used French stretch terry fabric to cover his nose, snout, jaw and lower lip. The tongue was made from satin. The previous owner reupholstered his snout and jaw, but didn't use the same type of cloth. Unfortunately, stretch terry is not easy to find except online. The pink fabric looks fine so I'll leave that for now until I can find the correct fabric. My plan is to give him a new nose and recreate the lower lip and tongue. I ordered black and red stretch terry from fabrics.com. Hopefully they should arrive next week. There should be plenty of fabric left over if I have to redo them if/when I find the correct pink cloth. I hope to work on him a little each day. |

The eyes look so much brighter and cheerful now! It always amazes me how fixing even small little details makes a world of difference. |

They might be a little too bright. I'm told if it's too white it looks like the whites of his eyes are glowing against the dark fur. From what I understand, the store techs just went down to the hardware store and bought whatever yellowish off white flat paint they could find locally. There weren't nearly as many colors available back then, though. The base layer of the old paint was pretty yellow, but I thought it might look a little too dark so this paint is more like an ivory color. We'll have to see how it works out once I get the irises. If it's too bright, it's no big deal if I have to strip and repaint them again. |

the holes do a few things including reduce the mass (weight) of the eyeballs, but they are also helpful in popping off old irises as well as centering them when applying new ones. Did you paint in place or pop the eyes off to paint them? |

I took them off. After hearing what a PITA they are to get off the post, I removed the bolts that hold the mounts in place from the back, then disconnected the cylinder and return spring assembly. Then I wrapped the posts and mounts in masking tape before painting. I was hoping redoing the connections would eliminate the play in the left eye turning, but no such luck. I think it has something to do with how the return spring piece is adjusted but I haven't tried tweaking that yet. |

I feel like it needs a size up, but I'm honestly not sure. |

I concur. I'd like to see what a larger one looks like in comparison to this one. I'd also be interested in seeing what it would look like stuck on length-wise instead of the 'right' way. Edited by Vega-Three, Jun 10 2015, 03:16 PM.

Nose doesn't look bad, though I agree with Vega, try out a bigger one, and see which one fits him better. |

The new irises look good, but they came out a bit thicker than I expected. Maybe it's a limitation of the printer.![]() They also don't conform exactly to the eyeball, but then again neither do the original irises. It might be because of the flash on the back, though. Thinking I'm going to sand them down, and give it a shot. I calculated their size based on the diameter of a croquet ball. If that doesn't work I'll measure the actual eyeball, then tweak the iris measurements and try again next week. Just wish the library wasn't an hour's drive away... Definitely looks promising, but I might need to make a few attempts. We'll see! Edited by 80sgirl, Jun 12 2015, 09:18 AM.

Ooohhh... this is cool. Great first attempt!!! Sounds like you have a good plan of attack to tweak these and modify. How much do you think can be removed by sanding them, or will that trash their "integrity"? Keep up this great effort. |

Oh yes, that nose looks much better! Best of luck on the irises, 80sgirl. The print looks good. I sure hope you can get them sanded down so they work for you! |

Nice. 3D printers tend to make stuff a little bigger than measured.. |
