It's not that I don't like the idea, I just want evidence to prove Huntington Beach had a shelf stage setup. |

I Think a handful of stores had the Shelf setup, but with Balcony Bots before the Balcony stage itself was finalized. This list might be a little harder to do.

This is why I prefer calling them ottoman bots now... All of the stores that opened after Kooser but before approximately mid-1980 had portrait stages but used the same bots as the balcony stage. Ogden opened in May of 1980 and was one of the last stores to have a confirmed opening date before they stopped publishing the newsletter for a year. So it's reasonable to assume all stores opened before that time except Winchester and Kooser had portrait stages with ottoman bots. I did a lot of combing through The Pizza Times looking for mentions and opening dates when I made the map, and not all stores had given opening dates. There are also a few issues missing from the archive. Here are the ones I'm sure about: Citrus Heights, CA (December 1979) Concord, CA (May 1979) Fullerton, CA (between December 1979 and May 1980) Huntington Beach, CA (October 1979) La Habra, CA (May 1980) Sacramento, CA (Before October 1979) Stockton, CA (October 1979) Sparks, NV (December 1979) Here are the ones that might have had a portrait stage, depending on when they opened and what the exact cutoff date was. Where there is no date the store opened during the publishing gap between May 1980 and May 1981. Tuscon, AZ (July 1980) Covina, CA (August 1980) Fremont, CA Fresno, CA (June 1980) Hayward, CA Lakewood, CA San Diego, CA (both locations) San Ramone, CA (August 1980) Simi Valley, CA (August 1980) Sun Valley, CA (July 1980) Fort Meyers, FL Orlando, FL Maple Heights, OH Raleigh, NC Westland, MI Arlington, TX There very well could be more that opened during the May 80-81 time frame because some stores had a mention, but were never given a confirmed opening. For example, El Cajon, CA got a mention in the September 1981 issue of The Pizza Times but there's no notice of when it actually opened. Could have opened in May 1980 right after Ogden for all I know. Edited by 80sgirl, Dec 5 2015, 11:36 AM.

Might want to change the title of the thread to every confirmed store, then. Given the information that's available, I don't think it's possible to have a list of every store that had a portrait stage. We simply don't know for sure when the cutoff was or how many stores opened before that date. Another interesting thing is a lot of people assume the Kooser show is the oldest still existing, but that's probably not the case. Kooser's show was replaced in 1980. If both stores still have their original ottoman bots, the show at Huntington Beach is the oldest. Edited by 80sgirl, Dec 5 2015, 08:54 PM.

Giving you info about the Show!

Also to note is that in the 1981 Annual Report, it says that the number of centers in operation are: 1977: 1 1978: 2 1979: 7 1980: 25 This means that only 5 stores opened in 1979, so the number you had, 80sgirl, COULD be incorrect. And then a couple of 1980 stores would have the Shelf/Portrait, so the number of Portrait stages should be around 10. ALSO, IN PIZZA TIMES OF 1979, IT SAYS THAT CITRUS HEIGHTS WILL HAVE THE FIRST STAGE WITH "THE CRITTERS ALL ON ONE WALL". This means Citrus Heights and stores afterward may have the Balcony Stage. Stores INDEFINITELY Winchester, San Jose, CA (May 1977) Kooser, San Jose, CA (December 1978) Concord, CA (March 1979) Huntington Beach, CA (1979) Florin Mall, South Sacramento, CA (1979) Stockton, CA (1979) Sparks, NV (December 1979) Ogden, UT (May 1980) There are other stores that could have had the Portrait Stage, as well as Ogden being the last Portrait Stage ever made. |

My opening dates come from The Pizza Times. The first issue was published in December 1979 and gives reports on Winchester, Kooser, Concord, Huntington Beach, South Sacramento and Stockton. It says Citrus Heights and Sparks were opening that month. It's possible one of them had a delayed opening and opened in early 1980, but I don't think that's relevant to the stage since the stage changeover happened after May 1980. Also, the comment about Citrus Heights means they had the bots in portrait frames on one wall near the showroom ceiling. At Kooser and Winchester they were on all four walls. If you look at the pictures of the Ogden showroom, that is how they are arranged: ![]() ![]() The description of the Kooser balcony stage in the second issue of The Pizza Times makes it clear the balcony is a new development. They were even going to do a store survey to see how people liked the new staging. http://showbizpizza.com/info/documents/ptt/ptt_pizzatimes-1980.pdf I doubt Ogden was the last store to open with a portrait stage since the timing mentioned they were doing the survey in a few weeks. The stores that opened in June most likely had the same setup. July, possibly since they were probably under construction. After that they probably had balcony stages. I thought Kooser had them on two adjacent walls and not four in a 360 degree manner like Winchester? |

I doubt any of them are for sale. ![]() As far as I know, the only show from that early period to fall into private hands and survive into recent times was Ogden. It was turned into the Banjo Billy retrofit and deteriorated in storage. Slappy used parts from it to rebuild his current show. I sometimes wonder what happened to the hundred or so shows from stores that closed around the bankruptcy. The show that recently turned up was made during the summer of 1981, but that store closed later. |

Its funny how they turned Odgen's Jasper into a Banjo Billy, then Slappy got the show and they turned Banjo Billy 100% back to Jasper. That was like the only character that was almost 100% salvageable. The rest were rusted and dry rotted. So sad some of the last portrait show died that way. At keast some still survive today.
