I was just thinking...as we all know, originally Topeka Inn Management bought a franchise with Pizza Time Theatre prior to opting to create their own competing company, Showbiz Pizza Place. Question being this, what would have happened if the PTT/TIM franchise would have not fallen through?? Would PTT still have gone bankrupt causing there to be no CEC today? Or would this have made the company stronger, and the bankruptcy never would have happened?? |

The bankruptcy was a main product of the Video Game Crash of 1983. It didn't help both companies. |

Actually, Chicago didn't see its first ShowBiz until April 1981 (Bloomingdale, IL - now gone) and its first CECPTT until sometime in 1982 (Chicago and Waukegan). |

I just wonder though, would the combined management skills of TIM and PTT been able to keep PTT afloat...or was the reason SPP was able to stay afloat as long as it did, and was able to merge with PTT, was the management style difference...and what would have happened if TIM/SPP did not have to give PTT 20% of their profits due to franchise infringement. I would have loved to be in Kansas City, back when SPP started, so I could see what they had and what from PTT they used. Also seeing the WP5 in their prime would have been pretty awesome. I understand that the video game crash of 1983 basically caused the bankruptcy, but it effected both PTT and SPP, so why did PTT fail where SPP stayed afloat? |

It was a number of things that made PTT fall and spp remain intact. One, I hear spp wasn't that far from bankruptcy either, and the acquisition of PTT saved them. As well, spp branded largely to teens, and in the 80's that was money for a company. PTT branded to a younger audience starting around 1981. They also changed their pizza in 84' and got terrible reviews. On top of that, the arcade crash was unexpected and PTT poured millions into making new attractions not knowing it would come. I always joke it was bb bubble's singing that contributed to it

If PTT and TIM had worked together like they originally intended, there would have been no ShowBiz Pizza and no RAE (well, probably). But I think Aaron / CEI would have gotten the attention of someone else along the way. CEI was making great shows even before the RAE and they were really so good that someone was bound to take notice and want to use their talents at some point. ^ I.E. Willy Wabbit and Mystery Fun House, before any of this. They ended up getting a bunch of robots including The King after a PTT collapse. |

I think it had a lot to do with Brock's financial setup. His company also owned a large chain of Holiday Inn franchises. The money from his hotel business was what kept Showbiz afloat. PTT had nothing else to fall back on. |

Yeah, Showbiz was not doing well. Without Brock's money i really don't see how it would have lasted even to 1984. The problem is that each store cost a considerable amount of money to open and maintain and they weren't making enough per store to make the whole operation profitable. Showbiz didn't actually start making money until Dick Frank stepped in after the merger (and even then it wasn't until a few years after Dick came onboard- I don't think they actually made any money between 1985 when he arrived and about 1988 after they were spun-off by TMI and became their own independent company). It took them that long to work down their debts to a manageable level and actually pay them all off. I've said it before but Dick Frank saved ShowBiz/CEC from certain doom. They very likely would have gone under even after the merger without him righting the ship. It's a small miracle that they managed to actually survive for this long considering how badly Showbiz was managed over the years. Edited by PaulKTF, Mar 20 2016, 03:35 AM.
