Don't Smoke Crayolas!
|
I recently bought a Country Critters show and made a 25+ hour journey with my boyfriend to go pick them up. I'll be documenting their restoration through an off-site blog. At the moment I'm only working on Cal due to how massive, heavy and hard to move these characters are. Link to blog: http://texcritterspizzajamboree.tumblr.com/ We flew from San Diego to Spokane, WA, rented a 16' truck to load them and then drove through WA, OR, and then back to San Diego. The characters are very VERY heavy and took 3-4 people to load them. Their bases are extremely heavy and make them very difficult to move. Unfortunately they are not removable from those bases. Country Cal is 8' tall and his base is 30" wide, to give you an idea of his size. The truck loaded up. ![]() Country Cal loaded in the truck ![]() Me and Foxy Roxy ![]() Tex Critter loaded in the truck ![]() ![]() Tex's head in my lap. ![]() Inside Roxy's base. ![]() Country Cal's tail. ![]() Roxy without her body shells. ![]() Country Cal. His face is covered in some type of wet adhesive that's in his hair, on his eyes, and eyelids. It had dripped onto his shirt and guitar at some point and dried. He's going to need a lot of cleaning. ![]() Inside Tex Critter ![]() And of course, the maintenance manual. There's TONS of info in here about cleaning, running and repairing them, movement lists, etc. I will be scanning it and putting it into a PDF for everyone. ![]() These characters have a lot of movements including eyes up, down, left AND right, body turns/leans, head tilts, head turns, wings, tail movements, moving eyebrows. Even the snake has a lot of movements! Also, since there's some confusion about the puma and snake's names, they are officially Country Cal and Skeeter according to the manual. They are a lot more complicated than the animatronics I'm used to, so it may take me a while to get them running again. They're overwhelming and confusing, but I've only gotten a few good looks at them and I'm hoping to figure it all out when they're out of the truck. |

It was awesome you had someone who shares your enthusiasm and love for this stuff go with you. Positive support really does make the difference on those multi-day road trips. |

There won't be updates for quite a while. These guys live in my storage until I can move into a place big enough for them, which probably won't be for years. :C |

Don't Smoke Crayolas!

This past week me, my boyfriend and our friend Willy moved the show to a larger storage unit. The unit they were originally in was too small and they ended up completely surrounded by boxes and stuff. Since there's a lot of room around them in the new unit, I'm able to get some work done on them. Roxy was the easiest to move since she's the smallest (between 6 and 7 feet). Willy just propped her up on a dolly and rolled her into the elevator. ![]() Here's Cal in the elevator. He was too tall to stand so we had to tip him forward to fit inside. I love this picture because you get a great look at all the tubing crammed inside his head! ![]() Here's Country Cal waiting in the hallway. He was the second hardest to move because he's the tallest thanks to the snake on his currently non-existent hat. We left him in the hallway upstairs while we went back downstairs to get Tex Critter, and all I could think of was some poor person turning into the dark hallway only to have the light turn on and see this, haha. ![]() Here's Tex during and after his stressful journey of barely fitting through the halls and doors and just barely fitting into the elevator (the door was a half inch from his head). Thankfully he suffered very little damage during the move. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Guest starring CountRamsely/Ruben wearing a headband with an authentic Helen Henny feather in it lmao. ![]() ![]() I came back the next day and took all of Cal's body shells off. His body turn cylinder is disconnected and he's leaning forward. I'm working on doing repairs and a deep clean of his insides since his face melted into his body. Nothing is visibly wrong with Tex or Roxy mechanically, so all focus is on Cal right now. I'm still unable to test their movements unfortunately, but I'm at least doing what I can. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I also took their clothes home and cleaned them, and I ordered materials for Cal's new shirt, Roxy's missing pants and shirt, and Tex's hat and ears. Also bandanas for their necks (including Skeeter). I need to replace the tassels on Roxy's jacket because they're badly stained and frayed (I ordered metallic silver ones to replace the white ones that are on it). All of the black stains came out of her jacket though and it looks wonderful! When I took off Cal's pants I found out he's wearing 'boys size 3' Fruit of the Loom long john underwear or something similar that snaps on his body, and I thought that was amusing. Current project: Repainting eyelids, getting eyes white again, repainting Cal's guitar Next month I will be making molds of a lot of parts to aid in the restoration of Masterpj555's Tex and Rockafirelover's Cal. I'll also be taking Cal home soon to air him up and begin complete restoration. |

I have some crazy news. While looking at the high quality photos of the show that Larry Nikolai provided, I noticed the characters had #2 written all over their body shells. My show also has #2 written on them. Larry confirmed that the numbers written on the Tex Critter's animatronics are show numbers. I compared the writing on my show to the photos he provided (they are both numbered with 2) and the writing appears to match up, except mine also has the body parts labeled, which could have been added later (especially since one of these is written on top of the number writing). I decided to further compare them and realized the hand painted lines on Roxanne's ears match up exactly with Larry's photos. Her hair does too (the way it's brushed and airbrushed). That means that the high quality 80's photos Larry provided IS MY SHOW. Except Tex, my Tex is #4!![]()

Distortion/melting, possibly? Weren't they in a very hot environment? That could be the case. (additionally, a bit of the ear is behind the hair. we aren't seeing all of it.)
