Well, it's been about 4 years now since the short lived Acts era debuted, a noble experiment that essentially fell apart by the end (C'mon, just compare the ideal execution of an Acts show, the Summer Show to the final Acts show, Jan. 2015, the difference between those two shows are somewhat remarkable the more you analyze it). Each show was story driven, with a plethora of originals making up the show's songs. However, there is one interesting exception, and that of course is the September 2014 Show. A show similar to the Summer show, with the exception of course being the types of songs featured, all but 1 of the songs are covers. And interestingly enough, the covers mostly consisted of more recent songs from the time such as Trouble, Safe and Sound, and Best Song Ever. Throughout the Rockstar Era up to that point, the shows contained a fair balance of material from all sorts of different eras, from early 2010's pop songs to 60's Beatles songs. Of course the presentation of these shows were more dramatic than the Avenger shows, with the incorporation of a more story based structure (Y'know, Sept. 2013 & Jan. 2014), but that's aside the point, the song selection was pretty much the same as the Avenger era. But the thing I find most interesting about such an insignificant (Unless you count completing Beaver's "story arc" significant) show is how odd the direction of the music is. Had the Acts era remained, say if the Music Video Era never debuted, this odd theory popped into my head. If the Acts era remained, and continued to this very day, I wonder if shows would feature covers of songs of more recent time. Granted, Maniac was from 1983, but all the other covers were from within 5 year span from when the show was released. This makes me wonder, if covers were still used today, would they only be of recent songs? This idea of course stems from the lack of covers since the dreaded Music Video Era started, and being bored, I thought it'd be interesting to share my thoughts on this idea. I'm interested if the certain selection of these covers were a test to draw in more people to the show, given their "modern" status? Kind of like how the Music Video Era features (Especially in earlier shows) modern music videos in an attempt to attract more people to the show. Could this have been a possible test of this type of practice (Obviously had no correlation with the format of the current show, what I mean is using modern music in some form). What're your thoughts on this? If covers returned, would you imagine they'd be taken in this direction? |

Considering with the few current "parody live shows" being popular songs within the year, I'd have to say yes. Every now and then I'd expect to hear a song from the 80's because practically the majority of the covers in the show were classics. Would have been nice to see them move in that direction.

If covers were to ever come back, I'd still think we'd be stuck in the Music Video era. But I definitely would be in favor of covers returning, even if it meant being allowed to do only one or two a year due to licensing. |
