OCC: This takes place after the events of Birth by Sleep, meaning Nari was/will be separated from Akami after the fight.))

IC:

She had ran...and ran...and kept on running until she didn't know if where she even was now. That battle against that crazy old horse was something Nari never anticipated during the course of her journey. She had been lucky up to that point, but it seemed her luck ran out when she crossed paths with her. Now, she was pretty banged up from the encounter, she lost track of her new friend, and her precious jewel was stolen!

Her feet and legs were aching with each step she took. Bruises were spotted along her body, specifically on her arms and legs. There was a pretty nicely-sized knot on her head from the fall she took in the crater, multiple cuts along her form. Those didn't come from her enemy, but rather in her desperation to get away she ran straight through a thorn patch without thinking.

Tears were in her eyes from the pain of it all. But her mind was screaming at her to keep going despite its need to stop and rest. Rest was what she needed badly. Yet she couldn't stop now.

Eventually, the forest ended and endless fields and hills of green began. She was out of the forest now, that was a good thing. Hopefully that old horse wasn't following her up to that point.

"I'm out... but... Akami..."

Nari hated that she had to split up with her friend. But it was necessary for the both of them to survive that they did. Akami was probably safe and sound wherever she was, she seemed like the time who wouldn't go down without a fight.

Using her metal pole to help her walk with, the half-breed began to make her way down one of the green hills. In the distance, she though she saw something settled within a valley. She didn't know what it was, but it looked like a good place to stop and rest without having to worry about being perused and headed for it.

He had tried. He really had.

But his heart was not in it. Rouge and Omega occupied his mind somewhat, but... he couldn't get her out of his mind. Celeste.

It was maddening, infuriating! She was gone, vanished, and nowhere to find! Rouge and Omega were just as elusive... so he had returned to Knothole II, as they called it. But the Freedom Fighters... they wouldn't leave him alone. Too interested to listen to his death threats and too stupid to realise he wanted them gone. So he left.

Having nowhere to go, the Ultimate Life Form intended to return to the Spirit, unknowing of the shocking discovery he would find...

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
<<ALERT!>> came the warning, the still-functioning security systems springing to life, coming to bear on the newcomer. <<PRESENT IDENTIFICATION. VERIFY.>>
Having no response, a claw-like appendage sprang out, seeming to cast a red light in multiple directions at random. <<ALERT! MEDICAL. OVERRIDE.>>
With that, a greenish field of energy began to crackle around the barely-conscious Mobian, before cascading itself over her, teleporting her inside. Telaria ran yet another diagnostic on herself. <<THE MEDICAL BAY IS COMPROMISED. ESTIMATED REPAIR TIME: UNAVAILABLE. PLEASE STATE THE NATURE OF THE MEDICAL EMERGENCY.>>
No response.
Having little alternative, the walls cracked open, the basic first-aid systems that were installed on the bridge coming readily to action, having endured the years of non-use at the hands of their glorious Capt. Shadow, detached themselves and immediately began fussing over the girl. <Greetings!> came the cool, soft voice of Telaria. <You are injured. Please remain still.>
With that, the creature was lifted and propped into the (never used) 1st officer's chair, it being the only place other than Shadow's chair for the work to be done, properly. From a hovering drone, a canister of cold gel dumped itself over her, allowing the greenish light that pulsed from another drone to heal her, a soft throb accompaning it.
<All will be well. Are you the Captain's relief?>
Nari had reached the structure that was the unoccupied ship within the valley. It looked as if it hadn't been touched, lived in, or possibly fixed for some time now. But it didn't look run down, just wrecked in places here and there. In all, it was in fair condition.
Still, why there was a crashed spaceship within the middle of a green valley was beyond her. The pup brushed her hand against the outer hull of the ship. It seemed like the perfect place to lay low for a little while. It did stick out like a sore thumb, but it would give off the impression that it was uninhabited. Which would mean she would be left alone.
But before the teenager could figure out a way into the ship, something else happened. It happened in an instant and it felt as if she was weightless, the next thing she knew she was no longer outside but rather inside the ship's interior.
"What-?!"
The puggle was expecting someone to be inside so she could demand an explanation out of them, but there was no one around. Instead, she found herself surrounded by several metallic limbs that began to make a fuss over her.
It scared her that there were so many of those things around her. She didn't know if she was going to be tortured more or what. What kind of ship was this?! But again she didn't have a chance to get any answers as she was plucked from the floor by one of the metal arms and set into a dusty, yet comfortable seat. There was another seat next to her, and it looked as unoccupied and dust as the one she was set it.
She had dropped her metal pole in the process of being lifted and carried about like a young pup by their mother. Nari heard the gentle, feminine voice speaking to her from above but saw no one. "Umm...okay?"
Suddenly, she felt cold ooze being dumped on her without warning. The girl let out a yelp of surprise and instantly began to shiver from the cold. Great, she was covered in ooze and hurting form head to toe. Could it get any worst?
In fact, it wasn't. Luckily for her, the ship was true to her word about healing her. Another droid showed up, shining a gentle green light over her. The light felt so welcoming, it was taking the pain away from her body and making the girl numb and relaxed.
But despite that, seeing all the metal arms and droids move about still left Nari very unsettled. "You're not gonna anally probe me, are you?" she asked the disembodied voice.
Now if that had been the case, the ship wouldn't be healing her now would it? Then again, it could be healing her to prepare for experimentation... That or she was being paranoid about it all. She had a right to be like that considering the fight she just escaped from.
But when the voice asked her the question of the moment, Nari had little idea who or what the Captain's Relief was suppose to be. "Umm...sure, yeah." she said, blinking in wonder.
She had no idea what she had just agreed upon.
Telaria paused, her central terminal – deep within the belly of the ship – flickering and clicking a little, as she inventoried every single piece of hardware available to her.
Finally, she beeped twice. <Anal probe. This item is not currently installed; would you like to request a hardware enhancement?>
The query was immediately forgotten, however, when the creature admitted her vital function. <Excellent! Please state your full name... Captain Shadow has been relieved. Welcome aboard the Spirit II, Captain! I am Telaria, the onboard AI of this vessel!>
This was all...strange to her to say the least. The fact that the ship was simply talking to her was a wonder to the pupple. Nari would have just sat there, blinking at the ceiling of the ship cluelessly had it not been for Telaria asking for her name. “Oh, my name?” Nari was jarred out of her stupor long enough to at leave answer her question. “I'm Nari-Sa. It's...nice to meet you, Telaria. Who's Shadow?”
-
Shadow, too mono-present to know of these events, finally came to a halt, outside the stricken half-wreckage of his ship. Keying in his authorisation, he waited for the entrance to open... but it did not.
<Access denied.> came the cool tones of Telaria's automated response.
Unsure of what was happening, Shadow growled, teleporting into the ship and saving the need for the door in the first place. What was going on?
He froze, for just a moment. The ebony hedgehog's crimson gaze settled on the yellow girl in the 1st-officer's chair...
“... Shadow?” she said, questioningly.
He blinked for a moment, before frowning, another growl in his throat.
“Who are you? How do you know my name?!”
Posted by: Nari Sep 24 2010, 08:37 PM
Who was Shadow? Quite an odd name for a captain of this ship. It was a miracle the ship was even functioning considering how wrecked it looked on the outside. If he was the former captain of this ship then why did he let it get this bad? Why didn't he do anything about fixing it?
As she pondered those question in mind, Nari almost didn't catch the sound of a low growl behind her, a growl borderline snarl. But she instantly snapped to attention when just after she said his name, someone responded.
“Who are you? How do you know my name?!”
The pup froze in her place. If it was possible, one would have caught her sweatdropping. Whoever asked those questions didn't sound too pleased to find her in the likes of their ship, in the Captain's seat no less!
The yellow furred echidna/pup slowly looked over the side of her seat, finding herself staring back at the supposed 'Captain' of this ship. His black fur almost made him hard to see, but the red streaks along his body allowed him to stand out in the darkness. Though the white tuff of fur was an odd touch to him, but she ignored it when her eyes caught the glint of the gold rings at his wrist and legs. Her cobalt blue eyes looked back up to meet his crimson red eyes. The stare he was giving her easily left her intimidated, as if she couldn't stare at him for long without feeling the need to back away from him slowly.
It then registered in her mind that this had to be the one they were speaking about. The name Shadow did suit him. He seemed as though he just stepped out of the shadows, like a creature of pure darkness.
Nari couldn't bring herself to even say a word at first. But her actions pretty much conveyed her reaction to first laying eyes on him. The teenager tried to get out of his seat quickly, but ended up tripping and landed on her back on the floor. A slight whimper escaped her throat, be it out of fear of him or from the pain she was reeling from.
"I-I..." The pupple scrambled to sit up before the hedgehog. Considering she was still slightly covered in ooze, her fur was still damp and now shivering and she looked more like a drowned puppy.
And she thought the unicorn was scary... This guy made her look tame compared to him. "I got lost in the w-woods..." Nari began, staring at the floor under her to help keep herself steady. "I found the ship...and it somehow brought me inside here. It's been trying to heal me and everything. I didn't mean to intrude..."
Posted by: Shadow Oct 25 2010, 09:02 PM
He almost groaned.
Little girl, lost in the woods?
He wasn't a charity. Nor a hospital, a shelter, or an orphanage.
Couldn't they just leave him alone?
Shadow sighed, knowing exactly what Telaria's likely response had been, upon seeing the injured child lost in the forest. By the looks of her – and the copious amounts of medigel that glistened over the her body – this 'Nari-Sa' was critically injured.
He was no hospital, but he wasn't so cruel as to throw the child out, to die alone, stricken by bloodloss and betrayed by her frail mortal form.
Saving her life (thankfully) didn't have to be an act of compassion. It wasn't.
“Fine!” he growled, lowering his defensiveness somewhat. “But you are leaving, as soon as your life is no longer in danger!”
Was he serious? Was he really sparing her?
The child lifted her head to meet the gaze of the adult before her. Her stare was of that of quiet amazement, that this frightening black and red hedgehog was actually willing to spare her. Part of her was half expecting him to toss her outside, or finish what Oneira had started out of outrage for her trespassing. But, the outcome was different and she was allowed to live and heal. But the minute she was capable of fending for herself, he would cast her back into the wilderness.
That was the bittersweet truth she had to deal with. Nari couldn't push her luck with him any further. It sucked, but at least she was going to be allowed to recover before she left again. The echidna hybrid nodded to him. "Thank you." she said, allowing herself to stand up again, albeit rather shakily after having sat down for some time. Her body gave another shiver from the cold ooze that covered her and she looked up.
"Telaria...what am I suppose to do now?" Why she was asking the AI rather than the hedgehog? Because, the ship had a better idea of what to do with her patient than the Ultimate Lifeform did.
If Telaria were physical, she would have frowned. Darn it! She really should devise some cunning method of stopping unwanted visitors from teleporting onboard. Of course, Shadow was far from unwanted... but what if the new Captain didn't like him? That would be awful! Instead, the AI decided to take a more cunning route...
"You are both to remain aboard." came the beep. "Furthermore, you must inform X-O Shadow of his new position."
... X-O? That... couldn't be good.
"Telaria." Shadow stated, blankly. "Who is the captain of this vessel?"
There was a long pause from the AI.
"Nari-Sa." she bleeped.
If her ears were completely errect, they would have fallen flat against her head by that time. The twelve year old girl nervously rubbed the back on her head while she gave the hedgehog a cheesy grin.
"Umm...yeah. That's my name, Nari-Sa." She tried to make light of the apparently awkward and likely soon-to-turn bad situation. "W-Wait, I'm the captain now? When did that happen?" she blinked, turning to the ceiling of the ship like the clueless child she was.
Shadow stood in silence for a long moment, running the machine's words through his mind, over and over.
XO. Executive Officer. Commander.
He had been made second-in-command of his own ship?!
He realised that his eyes were closed, a faint aura of frustration and energy swathing the air around him. "There better be an explanation for this, Telaria." he warned, seething and not knowing what else to do.
Without warning, a vibrant blue light flared in the center of the stricken bridge, cascading its brilliance across the pair before fading into a simple holographic recording. "Are you the Captain's relief?" the recording asked, followed by a voice that could only be Nari's;
"Umm... sure. Yeah."
Shadow's eyes moved from the hologram to the real thing, as though ready to growl.
Yeah...the situation just turned from awkward to 'this could get ugly'.
She wanted to hide at that point, the seething aura that was projecting from the hedgehog alone was enough to strike the same level of fear as that illusion the old horse managed to conjure up. A light, puppy-like whimper escape from her throat, a natural reaction she made when she was frightened. She made that sound often when her sister was trying to intimidate her, and that happened often.
The truth was gonna come out at some point, may as well tell him the truth. "I-I didn't know what she meant!" Nari tried to explain. "I just said yes cause I was afraid of getting anally probed by all those...weird metal limb thingys!"
After the interesting introduction and revelation, Nari felt it was best to not only give the irate hedgehog some space. But it was probably best that she not linger here for too much longer. Shadow was pretty upset when he learned his ship had been turned over into her name, and it wasn't even hers to begin with. She had no right to stay in a place that wasn't hers to begin with. The girl resolved to leave once she was completely better. Which thanks to the treatment Telaria had given her, it was making recovery a less slowly process.
With her body wrapped in a big towel, Nari had changed clothes to allow hers to dry from the ooze. Her head was also covered by the same towel leaving only her muzzle exposed. Sadly there wasn't far that she could go. Not without either getting lost or running into the irritated ex-captain. She remained in the captain's chair, trying to muster up the courage to either speak to him or wait it out and leave when he wasn't looking.
Shadow was indeed irate. Perhaps something a little stronger, not that the exact definition really mattered. How could this have happened? How? After half a decade together, Shadow never would have expected this from Telaria, even given her... condition. Ugh, how he hated loopholes.
Not only that... but she was in his chair. Yet, it was rightfully hers. A guest in his own home, Shadow merely seethed quietly in the darkness.
Time passed on slowly. The boredom of waiting it out was slowly getting to her. Ugh! She couldn't take just sitting here and doing nothing anymore. Waiting it out would've caused the girl to go mad with boredom. That left with only one choice then: Try and make peace with Shadow. Getting up from the seat, Nari walked toward the silent blackness that was the back of the ship. She pulled the towel around her closer to her small frame. "Shadow? Are you out there?" Silence. That wasn't a good sign. She sighed briefly and lowered the towel around her head. "I wanna say, I'm sorry..."
"There is nothing to be sorry about." came the dead reply. "It is done and gone." It was all he had to say, really. It would be unlike him to rant and rage at this child. She was a thief, yes, but an unwitting one, and perhaps the situation was not entirely unresolvable.
His words sounded so dead and empty. Nari felt there had to be something else she could say or do. Not only that, but it felt awkward speaking to darkness rather than to an actual person. Though she wasn't about to pressure him into coming out. That would be pushing her luck. "I know, but still. I didn't know any of this would happen otherwise I would've stayed away. Anyways... I guess we could try and get along together. We started things off on the wrong foot anyhow." The child extended her hand out to the darkness. "My name is Nari-Sa. I'm from Starlight City."
His words sounded so dead and empty. Nari felt there had to be something else she could say or do. Not only that, but it felt awkward speaking to darkness rather than to an actual person. He merely quirked a brow, not understanding the gesture. "You know my name, and I know as well as I where I am from." There was another pause from the dark. "Starlight is some distance away."
To that, the child nodded her head. "It is." She lowered her outstretched hand, getting the feeling he wasn't much for introductions. "I was forced out from my home by my sister. She chased me away after my Mom went missing." She let out a brief, heavy sigh at that. it was evident that she still missed her mother and was confused as to what had happened. "I've been on my own since then, trying to find a village or some place to stay. I was doing well too, and I even found this really big diamond! ...Until it was stolen."
Shadow fell silent, his opinions of this child still forming. Once she was better... could he turn her away? Did she have anywhere to go? She'd been stolen from, apparently. No doubt the damage to her self was from that incident. Too weak for this world, this little thing. There was only one thing to do, it seemed. "I can find you a place to stay."
If her ears could, they would have perked up at that reply. "Really?" Nari asked, her blue eyes seemed to light up a little as she stared back into the darkness again. "I had planned on leaving sooner, didn't wanna stick around after what happened. But I do wanna do back home someday. I wanna find out what happened to my Mom."
"You are staying until you are fixed." he stated. It wasn't a request, his tone unmistakable. Beyond being hospitable; there was no telling what damages she could suffer in the outside world. And it'd be his fault. "Perhaps we can find someone to go with you." Strangely, Shadow felt the urge to accompany her to Starlight... but he couldn't leave the ship, not given the current state it was in.
That was a surprise. "Wait, you're letting me stay here?" Nari blinked. A while ago he acted like he didn't even want to put up with her just staying long enough to get better. Now, he was insisting she stay. How strange... Then again, she wasn't about to complain about the order either. "Why? I wanna go back to the city by myself. I have to look for my Mom, or find out what happened. It's something I wanna do alone." Hmm, that sounded familiar didn't it? That or the girl just didn't want anyone else to get hurt. Like Akami did...
"The city is too dangerous for you to go alone." he retorted simply, as it was fact. He recalled his - brief - time there; multiple hostiles that were apparently called 'Wardens', along with a great deal of destroyed, treacherous ruins. "You will die if you go alone." There was another pause. "And I have no choice but to let you stay, wanting to or not."
Now she was certain that he meant what he said. She had to admit, for being so scary he wasn't all that bad. It didn't meant she could be all friendly and pal-like around him. But at least she could relax around him. "Could you come out? I'm kinda tired of looking into darkness." she asked him. If she was going to stay with him for a while, the least he could do was get used to being around the kid.
Posted by: Shadow Jan 3 2011, 05:14 AM
Shadow growled lightly at the simple request, hating to follow other people's instructions like a dog or slave. He wasn't there for her convieniance! Regardless, he moved into the light a little, looming ominiously without reason or intending to.
Indeed, while he may not have intended or have reason to come off as intimidating, the child still saw it as such. Nari shuddered a little and closed her eyes at him, but she steeled her courage. There was another reason why she asked him to come out. With one hand clutching her towel, she used the other to pluck something off of her charm bracelet. Her small hand reached out to him, beckoning him to take what she was offering him. When he did, he would see that she had give him something, a charm in the shape of a black sphere.
He took it without knowing why, frowning briefly at the trinket before raising his gaze to her face, a questioning look on his face.
Seeing the questioning look on his face, she explained. "It's a charm. My Mom made this for me based off the elements. She said the black orb represented darkness. She said that darkness is all around us, but it's not something we should always fear. Darkness itself isn't what scares people, it's what's lurking inside it that does." To Nari, it was something that reminded her of the black and red hedgehog. He wasn't just part of the darkness, he was darkness itself. She wasn't afraid of it, only of the dangers that used it's cover. "Also...she always said I should give back to those who are good to me."
Perhaps 'twas a custom he had not experienced yet. Shadow, despite belonging more to this world than he knew, was an alien to his home, everything he saw new and previously unknown. There was no way to tell if he was from Mobius or not, and as much as he longed for the truth, it would not simply appear. So he took the thing, smoothly clipping it to the crimson plate on his bracer. "... thank you?" he said, the words strange and unfamiliar.
The child smiled at him. Yep, he was a strange one. But you know, the world was filled with strange people. Herself included. It wasn't often people saw a half breed like her. And it wasn't likely people saw a hedgehog like him. Perhaps. in a way, they had more in common than they realized. "I should go see if my clothes are dry now." she said and turned away from Shadow to return to where she had places her clothes. Lying of the ground, not far from where he stood, was the weapon she had dropped upon entering the ship the first time.
He left the pup to her own devices with a nod, a sigh in his breath. The Spirit was her ship, now. Well... what was left of her, anyway. He only hoped that this could be resolved...
Posted by: Nari Jan 3 2011, 05:18 AM
A few days passed. Enough time for injuries to be completely healed and for the pup and the hedgehog to get used to one another. As much as Nari did enjoy staying there, at least to a degree when Shadow barred her from exploring the back part of the ship. She knew she had stayed long enough.
It was time she moved on and find a new place to stay. In the dead of night, she had prepared herself to travel solo again. With her clothes and her metal pole, the child had managed to get outside of the ship. It was the perfect time to leave. During her time on the ship, she had gotten used to Shadow suddenly leaving for hours and hours on end. He never explain why he would leave for so long, but then again she wasn't in the position to question it.
Posted by: Shadow Jan 3 2011, 05:19 AM
A crackling red energy spread over Nari's body, starting at her legs and working its way along her like fire over dry grass, eventually coating her entire body, freezing her limbs solidly and raising her slowly into the air. The pup rotated mid-air, coming face-to-face with the telekinetic being who was holding her there. His expression said more about his mood than words would.
Easy to say that the child hadn't experienced anything like this before. Nari expression was of wide-eyed surprise, and awkwardness at being unable to move. When she was lifted into the air the awkwardness grew. But it soon turned into embarrassment, like a child being caught by a parent when sneaking out, when she saw it was Shadow who was pulling the strings behind this. "Ehehe...Hi there~" she chimed, giving him a sheepish smile.
He offered her no sympathy, only a cold glare into her eyes as he awaited her explanation. "Well?"
Posted by: Nari Jan 3 2011, 05:29 AM
Nari sighed. She had been caught red handed. "I wanted to leave for Knothole by myself. You were gone again and I'm all better. So I felt I didn't need to stay any longer and all."
Shadow merely raised a brow at her. "Knothole. And you know the way?"
"...Okay no I don't. But I would have on my own!" Nari replied, blinking at Shadow.
Okay so she didn't know how to get to Knothole, but no one could blame her for not trying. She didn't want to bother Shadow any more than he already had been with her abrupt arrival. Beside, it wasn't like they were going to see each other after this.
"Besides, you can't say you wouldn't be happy once I'm out of your hair." The pupple stated simply, looking directly at the hedgehog who was still holding her up via telekinesis. "I was only suppose to stay here long enough to get better, remember? I can't come back here."
After a several moments of odd silence passed, she asked the question. "...Could you let me down now?"
Posted by: Shadow Feb 10 2011, 12:53 AM
After a brief moment of consideration from Shadow, the red lightning slipped away from Nari’s body, gently setting her to her feet again before dissipating into nothing.
There was some truth to Nari’s words. There was work to be done... people to be found. Things that he could not do, not while he simultaneously had to cater for this child. That, and he had absolutely no idea where to begin...
Not like he was an expert on Knothole. He’d only been there once, and only briefly. Still, it would be good to visit the 'dying' blue one again. There were questions to be asked of him, and - if Sonic had recovered sufficiently - they could be answered.
After a long, silent pause, Shadow finally spoke. “I will take you.” he said, quietly.
Posted by: Nari Feb 10 2011, 04:25 AM
The child was soon set free of the odd telekinetic hold the black and red hedgehog had over her. Her feet gently touched the ground as she was set back down and when he spoke, she listened.
There were times when she was genuinely frightened of him, of the possibilities he was capable of accomplishing with that awesome power of his. It reminded her that he could easily kill her with just a mere thought if he wanted.
And there, there were times where it seemed like he couldn't bring himself to do such terrible things. As if all he wanted was to be left alone with his thoughts, or to seek out other means on solving his problems.
There definitely seemed to be much more to Shadow than simply being a powerful hedgehog. She was curious enough to want to learn more...
The child looked up at the adult and took his hand with her own. "Lets go then." Nari replied softly, gripping his hand a little. She watched him carefully much like a child would look to their parent.
