Light.

The star this ball of dirt galloped around under the whip of gravity had started sending its rays through one of the narrow windows of the flying fortress since several minutes, but only now the streak of golden sunlight had reached the corner she'd stuck herself in several hours before, and from which her system hadn't bothered to make her walk out of.

Until now.

Light: it was all over her, now, it made the waterfall of her curly golden hair to shine like silk, it made the colors in the iris of her wide open eyes to shift through the spectrum, it painted her double shadow on the sidewalls, a black symmetrical shape, like a Rorschach inkblot.

But for Guts it made no difference.

Feline pupils narrowed in a conserved basic reflex, but her eyes could not see, opaque and unfocused. Dead skin an dulled fur, scattering feathers and withering scales could no longer feel anything, the nervous systems, the mobians that through them had felt the joy of basking in the sun long since sacrificed to allow her superior existence.

Her superior, unrivaled awareness, her detailed and refined perception, were all turned inwards: she contemplated but her own complexity, tweaking the essence of life itself.

Even so, it was only a matter of time before the outer world would claim its little shred of attention: every single cell and transistor of her brain intent in the processing cycle was soon distracted and overwhelmed by a rising tide of info.

Those particle-waves reverberating and penetrating in her were her enemy: energy, sunlight was but energy, allowing powerful reactions, giving birth to new moleculae, whole populations of bacteria proliferating or getting exterminated in minutes, the gas some of them produced in her hollow midriff stuffed with almost completely molten viscera starting fogging the glass.

In a trance, apparently dull and dead to the world outside, she contemplated the exploding activity in the micro-cosmo that was her own body, a warning stepping over the stream of data in her system.

=Decaying processes speed rate increasing to level sigma =

But it wasn't enough to break her concentration: the root took over, and unblinking, the unit took a step back, her bouncing curls the only part of her seeming somewhat alive. Metal hit metal, again and again and again: there was no reason for the root to stop her reversed march, and she was too busy to do it consciously.

She had a cycle to complete, the results of a long work to collect.

She kept walking backwards along the corridor, heavy double-doors automatically opening at her passage.

In an another part of the flying fortress, Psi 2.2's colleague was doing his own work, which was no less peculiar and impossible for an outsider to figure out. Thanatos spent most of his days in his lab that also worked as a medical facility for the RUIN units, and this day was no different. At the moment, the Lambda unit just as deeply concentrated to inside it's own mind as Guts had been just moments ago.

Well, actually the mind it was concentrating on was not it's own, but a prisoner's that was lying strapped on the table in front of it. Thanatos was leaning over the hapless mobian cat's head, a series of metallic spikes and sensors going from it's mouth through every possible entrance at the mobian's skull, searching through it's memories.

Forest, company, friendship. Relief, prospect of safety. Rest. Danger, surprise, fear. Pain, darkness.

Thanatos cursed silently in it's mind as it went through the memories of it's prisoner one scene at the time. For a time now, it had issued a search and capture protocol to all Horde robots in the Great Forest and in nearby regions, hoping to gain some information from the brains of the prisoners it would get. The mobian known as Sonic, the one who currently was the most troublesome opposing force to Lord Oblivion was still free, and Thanatos had taken it to itself, to find the base of operations of the blue hedgehog. But despite going through over two dozen prisoners already during these weeks, it still had not found anything concrete. Most of the prisoners knew hardly anything about Sonic, one or two had seen him once or twice, but that was it.

Sonic was an individual who greatly interested the Lambda unit, and it would had given much to be able to converse with this being, who was so prominent in the minds of mobians it had read. Thanatos had already went through all the encounters Oblivion himself or other RUIN had had with the blue hedgehog, but none of those had been too informative. It wanted to know more.

That is why Thanatos needed something closer to the source. Gaining hold of Sonic himself was a distant prospect at best, but if it could only find someone close to him, someone who he knew...then it might maybe be able to understand this being that denied all logical sense so much. It only it would had been able to get it's tentacles on Princess of Acorn kingdom when she had been Lord Oblivion's prisoner! But what had happened had happened, and there was no sense to wallow over it. At least it knew the names and appearances of the mobians who were now targets of it's search. The fox, the chipmunk, the coyote, the rabbit, the walrus. Those where the individuals it was looking for, among many others.

Thanatos stopped the interrogation, and the cat on the table stopped screaming at the same moment, what it had been doing ever since the Lambda had started ravaging it's mind half a hour ago. The RUIN unit just waved it's hand, and a mechanical hands unstrapped it's prisoner's limp body and carried it to the edge of the room, placing the body into one of the cylinders full of nutrient liquid that were arrayed in lines at the edge of the room, closing the cylinder and then moving it away from sight.

The lambda unit walked in front of the large pool of bright green liquid at the center of the room, and looked at it for a moment. Doing yet an another mind scan without getting any closer to it's goal had been frustrating, and for a moment it thought to drop it's cybernetics and go to the nutrient pool to rest. It's natural habitant was water, and even though it's extensive cybernetics allowed it to survive on land, it still fared so much better in aquatic environment.

However, the pondering of the RUIN unit were interrupted when the doors of the lab opened, and one of it's kin walked inside. Ah, Psi 2.2, also called "Guts." Thanatos had almost forgotten this little walking science project. The state of existence of Guts was something to be envied, she , or rather it, spent every moment of every day doing her work, all inside her own body. No matter where she went, nothing could interrupt her work. After all, Thanatos would had been much happier if it could carry all this extensive equipment of the lab around with it.

Thanatos stayed silent, seeing that the other RUIN was in middle of work, and did not interrupt, waiting that the Psi unit could complete her cycle of work, before asking how the results had been. They two were the closest things of scientists in the Fortress there were, and as such, Thanatos much preferred Guts's presence to other RUIN. They both worked with worlds no one else could see, be it a neural pathways and electric signals of brain, or then the entire cosmos of cells and bacteria inside each and every being.

The cycle was complete.

The data was stored just above her consciousness' reach, no mind able to carry on even the most basic function with a similar amount of information clogging its paths, no matter if organic or robotic. Or, like in her case, a mix of both.

It was time to start a new cycle, which meant it was time for the lowest functions of the unit, those that had been primary in her previous life, such as 'interacting' and 'acquiring external environment data' to finally take over once again. Describe the shift of status like waking up from a deep sleep would have been incorrect though: there was something incredibly harsh and rough in the passage: it was more like birth. Re-birth. Reincarnation.

Cycle after cycle, she lost her perfection, thrown away in the outer world, led by lowly impulses, by the broken remains her organic mind.

The moment her eyes could see, she felt them hurt, from staring at light. Red flashes were all her vision was reduced to, that she couldn't blink away, just blur with tears. A feral hiss escaped her throat as she wiped them with the cold back of a metallic hand. Cold. She could feel it now, on her skin. And wet. And a million other things: the weight of her hair. The rancid smell of decay. The hollowness of her body. The way the alien flesh was starting melting away from the myriad of metallic wires that were her nerves, what kept her together.

Overwhelmed, she did what every newborn does when coming into this world.

She screamed.

Emotions skyrocketed for a moment in her system, leading the root to mercifully intervene, toning them down. Her arms fell once again to her sides, the creature ignoring what half a second before had tormented her in an unbearable way.

She blinked once, twice. Still confused, still...unstable, like someone not sure the nightmare was over, or if dreaming of waking up was just part of it. The moment her still aching eyes registered the wide shadow looming over her, she narrowed them, trying to process among her scattered thoughts.

...Tall Tentacles Thanatos Fish Smell Unit Ripped Red Shiny Blades Lambda 1.0 fix-aches ....Interaction required?

The system ran a quick scan, checking for any reason such a behavior would have been allowed, and in the middle of considering how much nice he smelled she was suddenly made aware of the lack of nutritive liquids in her inner tanks. The interaction was authorized.

-Hi!-

A large smile split her features, pointy feral teeth showing as she expressed her primitive appreciation for his presence, and threw her arms up in greeting, droplets of molten flesh and blood splttered around all over her face and hair in the move.

-I am thirsty- she announced, in the petulant and demanding way of a child.
