Hi wordsmith, hi Kane, hi Nik! You can play the At games in any order you want. It hardly matters. There are very few references to previous games. But if you don't want to start playing right away, I suggest to play it in the following order. At1 -> At2 -> AtQ Read the spoiler only if you don't care about knowing many details before playing the games yourself. Spoiler: click to toggle The translation of At2 has some flaws, that's certain. I wouldn't say it's too bad to enjoy the game. The only gamebreaking downside that comes to mind is a certain battle that you need to win in order to advance with the story. It is bugged, the enemy uses an attack in the thirdattack phase. It causes the game to freeze. If you have the european version, you're fine. It was fixed before releasing it. The US version has that bug. It's still possible to beat the US version. Said battle isn't hard and can be easily won before the attack is used.

Thanks Omega and Arcadia. And hello newcomer Nik. Hope we aren't too crazy for you (Thunder's just horrid XD jk) anyways. Hope you like your time here on ARM. As for 3, you don't need to play the older ones to understand some of the basic stuff, but if you want to understand all the meat and potatoes, you need to go through all the games and even the extended universe aswell. But yeah, AT3 doesn't require previous games, but the only major thing to understand about AT3 that does require previous games (AT2) is about the heart of gaeas and Kokona and the GI (but a lot of 3 IIRC goes into talking about that or the thing very related to it, the Sea of Death.)

Thank you everyone for your kind welcome. ^^ I do have one more question though. is it worth it to get the "Limited Edition" of AT3? It costs a bit more but it comes with a soundtrack and artbook. Or so it says. Edited by Nikkolas, Nov 26 2013, 12:43 PM.

I'd say yes, the LE is worth it, but I'm collecting Ar tonelico related items. There are two LEs for AtQ. Both come with the game, artbook, soundtrack and a box where all of it is stored. The difference between the two LEs is a calendar that goes from april 2011 to march 2012. Regular LE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2vDRwqbEls NISA store LE: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lornpqmOm4c Beware of spoilers in the artbook and the calendar. The artbook (all pages) is shown in both videos, the calendar (all months) in the second. I have no idea if the soundtrack covers all tracks from the OST or not. One CD is in it, the OST that was sold separately has two CDs. I guess the soundtrack from the LE is a selection of the titles from the two CDs. |

Welcome, Nik! For the AT3 LE, the artbook is nice, and the music is up to the usual high standards. The CD only contains a brief partial soundtrack, however. About a dozen tracks or a few more, iirc. I guess it depends on just how much more the seller is asking. NISA only asked for $10 (US) more for the LE when it came out. I believe it was $50 (US) for the whole thing.

Well I'm an ebay shopper. I bet just the artbook is available on there somewhere (the calendar is. I saw it while looking for copies of ATQ) and if the CD isn't even the full OST, I don't see much reason to bother. I want to become a big fan of this series but I've been bitten in the butt in the past when I leap too hopefully into a new franchise. I spent $150 on a somewhat rare set of Neon Genesis Evangelion DVDs and I ended up being mostly just meh about the anime. Hardly worth the extra cash ya know. Then there was when I tried FFXIII. I was all set to ge ta Limited Edition of XIII-2 and stuff because I anticipated great things and I'd just have to own it. Then I actually played XIII and I never wanted to bother with any copy of XIII-2. The LE is nowhere near as expensive as the NGE set but I hope you can see why I'd rather just buy one of the games and try it out before I rush too far into things. I mean, I don't even own any OSTs, even for my favorite JRPGs with absolutely stunning soundtracks like Xenogears and Baten Kaitos. Edited by Nikkolas, Nov 26 2013, 01:56 PM.

Yup, I see where you're coming from, and what you said is what I'd recommend doing. I did the same thing when I first got into Gust's stuff. If you end up not liking it, it's definitely better to get burned for a little, than a lot. |

The artbook is on Ebay. It's 20 USD. The game is also around 20 US $ on eBay (can be more depending on the condition/seller). About the calendar: I've seen some of the LEs on eBay, but not the calendar without anything else. The cheapest NISA store LE I found is roughly 90 USD. |

This is it, right? http://www.ebay.com/itm/The-Purge-Party-Calendar-rare-limited-edition-Ar-tonelico-Qoga-Knell-of-Ar-Ciel-/350935572355?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item51b563df83 It looks nice and all but if I end up really liking the series, this is what I think I would really want http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=GUSTCD-11001 |

Yep, that's the LE calendar.
An excellent choice~ It even has some of the music from Ar tonelico's successor included. |

Tis mine I say! XD lol jk. But yeah, I'm surprised you found the calendar alone. I spent a while on eBay looking for the full NISA LE of Qoga. I only found very few, and most were pretty expensive as far as I can count on making in my current state of living. Oh how many times I wish I had a job so that I could not miss out on opportunity. On another note, I might just get the AT3 Hymmnote. The seller I've been watching who had it listed for the past year and a half is selling it for $114 and that's with the $16 shipping cost. Yes, that is the calendar of the NISA store LE. Shipping is only in the US for that one. Anyway, with the prices of the game, the calendar and the artbook being what they are, it makes more sense to get them and maybe buy the complete OST. This covers many music CDS for Ar tonelico. Exceptions are the OSTs for the three games, Singing Hill ~Ar=Ciel Ar=Dor~, Nijiiro Crayon, Ar tonelico Hymmnos Musical Mini Vocal Album ~Cocona~, Ar tonelico Hymmnos Musical Vocal Best ~Claire & Spica~, Kara*Cola ~Hymmnos Orgel Collection~ and some others. |

First, welcome to Worsdmith, Kane and Nikkolas! And personally, I'd argue that it'd be a better idea to begin with the first game in the series than beginning with the last one, for multiple reasons. Finally, Kane, I'd advise you to search for the Hymmnote 3 in places like Suruga-ya or Yahoo! Auctions Japan, as buying from these places will be far cheaper than if you try buying it at that steal of a price, even including the shipping and middleman fees. In fact, the only version of the Hymmnote that has insane costs is the one for the first game's soundtrack, and that's only due to its antiquity and rarity. |

Suruga-ya currently has no Hymmnote. Yahoo has the one for At1 for 19800 JPY and the one for At2 for 3980 JPY. There's a third site that apparently offers the AtQ Hymmnote for 2100 JPY. |

*whistles* Wow. Thanks Aqua and Omega. $60 together for 2 and 3's Hymmnote is much a better deal than the offer on eBay. Thanks for telling me even though I'd have probably not bought it until another week or two. Just how rare are 2 and 3's hymn notes anyways? At that price it seems like they're pretty common. (Though my interest in them is not solely for collection, but rather for actual implementation as well.)

| They aren't as rare, as more copies were produced than what was the case for AT1's Hymmnote. That said, the event version of the Hymmnote 1 is also slightly pricey (goes from 5000 to 10000 yen on average), but it isn't as good as the soundtrack version due to only having the sheet music for Phantasmagoria's vocals: it doesn't have any of the choruses or instrumentation. And it goes without saying that it lacks the score the Singing Hill ~Harmonics EOLIA~. |

| Ah, that's why then. So in the important case, it'd be rather preferable to bide my cash for the 1st Hymmnote before the others. Considering what you said, 2 and 3's Hymmnote should be around in circulation for a while until all copies get to people who want to keep em. |

There are currently four Hymmnotes being sold that I know of (worldwide, 1 x At1, 1 x At2, 2 x AtQ). 1 x eBay 2 x Yahoo! Auctions Japan 1 x Mandarake.co.jp Don't view the shop in english, for some reason, the Hymmnote only appears in the japanese version. Also, no guarantee that this is actually a Hymmnote as there is no picture for the corresponding article and my japanese is not the best (but I started learning four days ago). If they are always offered by the same people who don't manage to find a buyer... Well, then they are rare. Do you know a middleman service? There's one I used. Aside from horribly slow people at customs offices, everything went well. The ordered products are in good condition. I plan to use the same service again when there's something else I want. |

| I've never used what I can imagine to be a middleman service before. (I understand what the term defines, but this is my first hearing of it, and I'm not sure what you exactly mean by"middleman service" even though it sounds like something that would be exactly what it sounds like XD) |

| It's basically that: an intermediary that can buy things for you over at Japan and then send them to you. That's the only way we have of getting things from JP stores that don't ship overseas. |
