How was the swanky hotel, Lazy?
It was... not much different from a 4-star hotel.

I was out for work from morning till evening every day though, so I couldn't enjoy most of the hotel's facilities.

I will log in sporadically during the next two weeks, being in Kyoto for work-related reasons (which unfortunately means I will be busy all the day, and hardly able to see anything outside the city...).

Wow, that stinks  I mean, it's awesome you're going there but not being able to really enjoy it stinks. That's business travel for you. Safe travels and have fun in what ways you can I guess.

In the end, we were able to get some free time in the weekend, so it seems I will at least be able to go somewhere, lol.
The really good thing of meeting with Japanese colleagues, however, is that they will take you out to eat, drink and have fun in places where foreigners normally don't go and which you would never find by yourself.

They also organized a huge Japanese-style karaoke party, which btw can be a fairly disturbing experience if you have never done it :^^;:

That's awesome then :-3 At least you get to have some free time while you're there.
That doesn't surprise me that they're really accommodating like that. It's definitely different from meeting with American colleagues I would imagine. Not that I've had bad experiences with the work trips I've taken but it's just different. Different cultures and ways of approaching things. It's always nice to feel welcomed and at ease.

That karaoke party sounds really awesome  But I can definitely see that being an awkward experience for sure if you have never done something like that. And if you're just not really comfortable doing something like that in general. It's still pretty sweet that they organized it.

I'm just not very comfortable with singing in front of other people, and I don't really like hearing my voice either :^^;:

But the party itself was really fun. I ended up in a small room with (luckily) mostly young people, and the first thing that happened was pretty much this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJ8k1-0VT-w. After that, most people started singing (boring) English mainstream stuff, until a Japanese colleague suddenly threw in this song. I lol'd so hard, I didn't expect that someone would choose this kind of thing in front of everyone.

At that point, no one cared anymore, and we also went for this and this, among others. Yeah, it was pretty crazy, lol!

Oh, heck no. I cannot sing in front of people either :^^;: I would not want to hear the sound of my own voice singing. That is not my talent. I mean, I know karaoke is just supposed to be fun and you're not really expecting people to sound great but still.

That all sounds amazing though  I would have been fully entertained by that selection of music. Even if the singers weren't the best at singing the song. The entertainment value would have been priceless regardless. Sounds like a crazy good time to me.

HOLY SWEET H-WAVES, BATMAN! X_X

I'm so sorry if anyone's been needing me on anything, I greatly apologize for being out of touch!

Back in January, I moved back to my native Mississippi and had been looking for employment. I finally did land a new job two months ago and it's been CRAZY trying to train on the job and trying to help get things better at the same time. Also, I only have mobile internet access outside of weekly/biweekly trips to the local coffee shop.

And finally I'm back from Japan. In the end, the trip was far more enjoyable than I thought, and I was able to experience a few things I had long wanted to see with my own eyes.

The other day I went to see an anime movie (they were screening the 2nd movie of Tamayura) to test my Japanese listening ability, and to see what kind of people actually go watch this kind of stuff. As expected, the whole audience was like 7-8 people, most of them being fairly creepy otaku in their 30s-40s. Although admittedly I was the strangest guy of the bunch in that context... one of the problems of being a Westerner in Japan is that it's impossible to pass unnoticed, you stick out like a sore thumb wherever you go :^^;:

Also, during the last day I had a free afternoon and, just out of pure curiosity, I went to see Kyoto Animation's HQ. Given their fame, one would expect something fancy. Instead, it's literally a small 3-floor building in the middle of nowhere. They also have a very small official shop nearby, which apparently has a few unique goods sold in limited quantities that can't be found elsewhere.

Btw, welcome back, MidgitLD!

Apparently they have a nicer studio here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyoto_Animation#/media/File:Kyoto-animation-studio.jpg

It's good that you got to have more fun than expected. I kind of would have expected more of a sizable (and younger) audience at an anime movie in Japan, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised by that.

Yep, that's the building where they have their official shop. The floor above seems to have some of their offices as well, but it's not accessible.

As for anime movies, that pretty much depends on the target audience. Let's remember that, even in Japan, there are only a few super-popular anime series that can be really considered mainstream. All the others mostly fall into the niche/otaku realm (which usually carries a negative stigma), and if asked most people will reply that they've never heard of them before. I'm sure that if you went to see, say, a One Piece movie, then it would be as you said.

I can see this being the case, yeah. Pretty similar to here except stuff like One Piece and Naruto must have an even bigger audience over there. Any long running series like that. It's pretty much true anywhere that some stuff just gets more popular than others for various reasons. But even the less popular stuff will have a small group of fans. You'll just get weird looks if you admit to liking certain things.

Also, welcome back, MidgitLD~

I've got to report that I'll be undergoing surgery tomorrow to fix some breathing problems I've had due to paranasal sinus-related issues, and I'll be getting hospitalized this afternoon, so it's very likely I won't be around for at least the remainder of the week. Stay well, everyone!

Thank you both, Arcadia and Thunder.
I've already returned from the clinic. The surgery was a complete succeess and there were no complications, though the post-operatory is utter hell in itself... But I've only gotta put up with it for a few days, and then I'll be better than I ever was. And since I'm still recovering, I don't think I'll be doing much for now aside of browsing around a bit.

Very good news, aqua-kun~ I do hope the healing process gets better. That's always hard but you'll be much better in the end so that's what's important. Hang in there :-3
