Name: Marlena Carrigan Age: 36 Gender: Female Faction: Rebels Appearance: Marlena is a fairly plain looking woman. She has a round shaped head, a sharp nose, and a small chin. Her skin is beginning to show signs of age, with crow's feet by her eyes and a few wrinkles near her mouth. She wears large coke bottle glasses over her small, light blue eyes. Marlena's hair is wavy and brown, reaching to her shoulders, which she will sometimes clip behind her head, but most of the time she wears it down. Her hair is starting to gray a bit, so she colors her hair often, although she hasn't had much access to hair dye, so her roots are noticeably black. Marlena's body shows the signs of her middle-age as well. Having given birth to three children, Marlena's chest is slightly pudgy, meaning that she weighs about 168 pounds. Marlena is also only about 5'3” tall, so she looks very stout and plump. Her breasts are slightly sagging as well. Marlena tends to dress very casually. Most of the time, she will wear hand knit sweaters and sweatpants. However, if things get more serious, Marlena will pull out a nice blouse and suit pants. She wears black clogs and white socks at all times. Biography: Marlena's early life was fairly average. Her parents, Juliet and Christopher, were a nurse and a soldier. She was the second of two children, having an older brother, James, who is only one year older than her. Her father died during the Vietnam War, leaving Juliet to raise James and Marlena on her own. From an early age, Marlena always knew she wanted to be a mother. When she was a girl, she would stuff pillows under her shirt and pretend to be pregnant, and also pretend her dolls were her children. Growing up, Marlena tried everything she could to become a good wife and mother, from taking cooking classes, sewing classes, and learning other domestic skills. She graduated high school with average grades and went to a state school to earn a degree in Elementary Education so she could get a job before settling down. After graduation, Marlena got a job teaching second graders at William J. Hillsbourough Memorial School. When she was 24, Marlena met Eamon Roche, a soldier from a nearby military base. They met at a school function, where the soldiers of the base were treated to a pageant by the children. Marlena and Eamon dated for a year and a half before Eamon proposed to her. They were married a year later. At 28, Marlena and Eamon welcomed their first child, a girl named Adele. Marlena choose to only take a brief maternity leave after Adele's birth, since she and Eamon needed the money. Marlena's mother Juliet moved in with Marlena and Eamon to help take care of Adele while the two were working. When Marlena was 30, she and Eamon welcomed their second child, a boy named Noah. A year later, a second girl was born, Talia. Marlena's life was going well at this point, having three adorable children, a wonderful husband, and a nice homelife. However, Eamon was soon promoted to Captain in the military, and this promotion meant that he had to do more overseas work. Although Marlena found it difficult to handle raising her children without him, her mother was still willing to help, since she enjoyed being around her only grandchildren. When Marlena was 34, her perfect life came crashing down. Shortly after hearing about the explosion of the Riverside Research and Development Facility, strange things began to happen in home. First, Juliet did not wake up one morning. Juliet was only 63 and in fairly good health, so it was assumed that it was simply natural causes. The next day, three year old Talia came down with a fever. Shortly after she was admitted to the hospital, six year old Adele and four year old Noah also began to feel unwell and were admitted shortly after. As this was occurring, lots of other children were admitted to the hospital, many of whome were Marlena's students. Then everything came tumbling down like dominoes. Talia died a few days after being admitted to the hospital. Noah was the next to go. Adele held out as long as she could, but ultimately succumbed to the same illness as her siblings. In the shock of losing her mother and her three children, Marlena fell ill and was also admitted to the hospital. As she was kept there, she began to notice a weird change to her body. At times, Marlena could turn parts of her body into clouds of smoke. At first, she had no control of the power, but soon discovered that she could reform her body if she concentrated hard enough. Marlena kept the power secret, and soon was released from the hospital. After the funerals of her mother and children, Marlena learned of the quarantine. Brockton was blocked off and they began to check people who were showing signs of mutations. Marlena at first wanted to be checked, especially after she learned that Eamon had been transferred to the military group that had quarantined the city. However, when she learned that she would be kept under surveillance and experimented, she hurried away and hid in the city out of fear. While trying to figure out her place in the now sealed off Brockton, Marlena found out about the Rebellion, led by Alice Barnstead. Fueled by her grief over the loss of her mother and children and the feeling of betrayal by her husband, she decided to join. Marlena uses her power to try and spy on the military groups, but her main goal is to simply get back at the military, which she blames for the accident and the misery it brought her. She also has cut off any connections to her husband, taking back her maiden name and refusing to associate with him. Power: Marlena has the ability to convert her body into smoke. The process is done mentally, where she simply wills her body into turning into a shapeless cloud of smoke. Marlena is capable of staying in smoke form indefinitely, but she still retains human feelings like drowsiness and hunger, so she has to turn back eventually. However, there isn't too much Marlena can do as a cloud of smoke. While she can avoid physical attacks, most of the time all she can do is simply float around. She can be affected by the weather, such as strong wind blowing her in certain directions. This means that she is mostly used for espionage or security purposes. While Marlena can change her body into smoke, it doesn't allow her to turn any clothing or accessories either. This does mean that she loses her glasses when she turns into smoke, leaving her somewhat blinded, so she has to figure out how to move around as a smoke cloud without as clear a vision as she is used to. Most of the time, Marlena simply has to just float around until she can find a recognizable location to return to human form. Because Marlena is shy about her body, she can't materialize as often as she would like, forcing her into the gaseous state for extended periods of time until she has a private chance to put on clothes and find new glasses. This means she has to plan her movements long ahead of time and be certain of where she is going. Starting Belongings: Marlena doesn't have too many weapons at home. Her husband kept a revoler in a locked drawer at home, to which only Marlena kept a key to when Eamon was overseas. She also has a set of Global kitchen knives which she supplied to the Rebels along with the revolver. Edited by Laurels, Apr 4 2013, 03:53 PM.

Hi Laurelena! Well, it looks like you're the first submission, so you're going to be the trailblazer here for others. This does mean, unfortunately, that we sort've have to use Marlena to work through the kinks of the process, but that's how it goes. Marlena is currently DENIED pending some changes, mostly relating to her power. I'm not a fan of being able to make specific parts of her smoke, so I'd say it's all or nothing at any given time. Also, a duration on how long she can stay in such a state should be listed, even if it's indefinitely. All the other caveats seem to be fine, though a bit of clarification on how she actually sees while in her cloud of smoke form would be helpful. Does she retain human shape or is she just a formless cloud? So yes, make those edits and then post back telling me you have, and I'll take another look. |

This part, "The process is done mentally, where she simply wills a part of her to become smoke and it turns into smoke", still has the 'parts of herself' bit. While we're at it, "Marlena is capable of staying in smoke form for as long as she can" is phrased sort of poorly and redundantly. I think you meant indefinitely barring the following conditions of hunger and such, but I just want that cleaned up then she'll probably be good to go. |
