Dimension hopping; last ditch flood of ideas campaign

On the whole, my "flood of ideas" campaign has been a disappointment. I've only gotten a really enthusiastic response for one idea, and that one I ended up handing over to Luke as a joint effort.

I still have hopes for Post Apoc. though

Anyway, I figure I'll throw a couple more hooks in the water before hanging up my fishing hook pierced hat.

One of those lures is dimension hopping.

I was thinking something along the lines of discovering a gate of some sort. I know it's an old and overused plot, but bear with me. It could lead to actual different aspects of reality, or it could simply be a gate to other places in the current reality, a la Stargate.

Other than that, I have no idea where the plot could go.

Just the words 'Dimension Hopping' irritate me. Not because of the subject, but of how wrong it is. How much do you now about dimensions? Well, as a first question, how many are there? In a quizzical asking, just seeing how much you know. I had a teacher who I talked to a lot and he was odd. He claimed he would be the first to see the fourth dimension, and personally, I wouldn't doubt it. Anyways, if you'd want to go more into this, I'm your man.
I'm asking because I think you've already got your knowledge wrong. If you were able to see, or even travel, through the dimensions, it certainly would not be a gate. There is no one 'hole' you would be able to enter to travel out of the third dimension, much less any other dimension. That's where the dimensional rift comes in. Meh.

Like in M theory? I think they had it pegged at around eleven last time I checked.

Don't worry Luke, I know just how horribly wrong the entire concept is.

I was approaching the subject from an entirely fictional direction, as in the concept as it is used in popular culture. It's an interesting idea to be using gates and whatnot to be traveling to alternate realities, despite how impossible it is.

I only used the term "dimension" because I was afraid I wouldn't get any recognition for the plot idea if I didn't.

Now, if I'm through defending myself against attacks, does anyone have any actual interest in the idea?

No, there's only 10. If they found an eleventh, by god I'd like to know where it would go. I don't think you can go past to every single ending to every single universe. <_<

Anyways, what were you meaning by dimension then?

Eh, I was close.

Anyway, what I meant was alternate realities as they are portrayed in popular culture.

You know, like going back and forth between different layers of reality, each could be eerily similar or terrifyingly different. Fun with alternate versions of your self, that sort of thing.

As always, I must bow to your superior knowledge on the subject, and if theirs no way it could work in reality we could always throw in the classic explaining element: magic

A WIZARD DID IT!

Well if we want to work with realities, that might be hard to actually carry out. I mean, think of it. What would the plot be? A teen is sitting in school one day when he walks into his classroom as normal to find himself already sitting in his seat, except it's not him. It's his self from another reality that somehow slipped into this reality. The two meet eachother and are both freaked out, and now aren't sure who's really who.
Once school lets out, the two start talking to eachother, and one of them finds things to be odd. He finds it strange that the world is not ruled by one supreme dictator, but instead separate countries with their own government. He claims that where he came from, the world was ruled by a dictator who was on a crave for more land. Later in the plot, it turns out the dictator from the other reality was building a portal to other realities, where he planned to dominate over too. That's where the plot kicks in, when the teen and his other self decide to take action and shut the portal to secure the one reality, but eventually have an accident and the portal is revealed to the public, and so begins the inter-reality war.

WHOA! So maybe the plot would work out... Sorry, I kinda trailed off there lost in thought. Meh.

Holy shit...

You... you just came up with an entire plot in what must've been thirty seconds.

That's... Awesome

I've had moments like that before. You can't get to a computer and get it onto the screen fast enough. I wish they came more often...

Anyway, I like that plot. If we get more support for this, that sounds like a really good idea.

Really? Dude, that happens all the time with me. Like seriously, I could think up something whenever I wanted to. Go ahead, give me a basic theme, put a quarter in, and I'll go again.

Um... It turns out dragons are real, just been in deep sleep for several thousand years.

Yeah, because that's a completely original idea that has never been used before in at least twenty different books.

I came up with the idea in like three second, give me a break. I'm better at developing the fine details of plots and ideas than I am at making the foundation and outline.

Foundation and outline should in theory be much easier, for you need to know that before you create the details.

In theory. I'm perfectly fine once I have the foundation and outline, it's just that I can never seem to come up with the idea. Once I have a rare burst of inspiration, then I can chug along quite contently.

Whatever, for me it all happens at once. Basic ideas are as easy as their details.

Hey, I got an idea that might be fun.

Dimensional rifts opens between several similar dimensions and ours. The two universes are similar only in that they have Sol and Earth in them, and that they have alternates to every character, everything else is fair game. Human society can be wildly different or even non-existent, replaced by a different form of intelligent life.

Here's the fun part: Through these dimensional rifts, the alternates of our characters fall through to our universe, appearing in the vicinity of the characters.

This would mean that everyone makes two characters, one from our universe and one from their chosen alternate dimension.

Beyond that, we'd have to see where the plot flows.
