Hartigan pulled his beat up car next to a liqueur store that was, ironically, right across from a church. It was almost funny, so many churches in this city, yet this infected pore of society had the largest crime rate. The detective chuckled to himself as he rolled this over in his head as he walked into the store. His head was aching, it felt like someone set a giant bear trap over his head and let it clamp down. The headache was splitting. He stumbled into the store, ignoring the people around him. He worked himself to a medicine rack, finding the most potent painkillers available. He then went to the liqueur section and grabbed five mini-bottles of Smirnoff, a bottled water, and a red bull. He paid the cashier and went back to his car. He popped three of the painkillers in his mouth and swallowed them dry, washing them down with a heavy swig from a mini-bottle of vodka. It wasn't long until the combination of the two made him feel dizzy and sleepy. He leaned his head back, closed his eyes, and he slipped into the darkness of sleep. Hartigan had forgotten what dreams are, he only knows nightmares. Max! Help! Max! Help us!... the sound of crying from a woman and a little child. Shut up, bitch! *Thud* blood dribbles on the floor. No!!! Leave them alone! Hartigan scrambled for his gun, only getting beaten to the punch by a baseball bat over his head. All went blurry as he hit the floor, a black lake of blood filling his vision. No! Max! Let's ravage this bitch! The girl too! No, no. Leave her alone. DADDY!!!! Hartigan started and yelled, pulling his .45 out and aiming radically. His breathing was ragged and sharp. He tried to calm himself, only to feel the luke-warm trail of tears on his face. The detective wiped his face with his jacket sleeve and pulled a file off of his dashboard, opening the vanilla colored folder to see the details about the one he was after. "Name: Mare; wanted for drug and human trafficking; has connections to the franchetti crime family." Hartigan let a cruel smile crack his lips as he pulled out his bowie knife, "Sorry Mare... Looks like today just 'aint your day." |

"What I really want is some people, some weird and Satanic kill a guy’s friend and try to do him in too kind of people, to be dead. I want them to die, if it’s deemed appropriate, painful deaths. I was thinking maybe if I converted… well no that’s not right because to convert I would have to already be religious. I… well I was thinking if I became a follower of God or whatever, he would look out for me, you know? Like if they come after me again he would… this sounds stupid but I think it happens in the bible… he would strike them down and save me…" Svetlana, trying to make sense of what this man was asking of her, finally made her way completely out of the shadows, her brows mashed together in concentration. Though she had been wandering this country for more than thirty years, her English still wasn't the greatest, and it took her a few moments to contemplate before she nodded and kept listening. "You see I just want to be able to work again without worrying about some group of freaks chasing me around saying they need to spill my impure blood." Svetlana shrugged an agreement, observing the grin that spread across Mare's face. "Understandable. So, you essentially want someone that is capable of killing those that have wronged you? Right, right. But in what manner...errr, for what reason, are you worth helping? Why do you deserve having this task done for you?" She bothered to ask, seeing as she couldn't get a good focus on Mare's thoughts anymore; his mind was racing. Shifting her weight to her right leg, her arms crossed, she spoke again quickly. "Mare, was it? They call me Lane." Edited by killersheepie, 5 Oct 2008, 03:19 AM.

If a ninja could be a food, what food would it be? "A cream puff. A very deadly cream puff. Maybe, the pastry, it has very sharp angles on it, and the cream that's inside is poison, the powdered sugar is actually, um, powdered swords. That's a pretty deadly food right there. I'd, I wouldn't mind being that food. Would NOT want to eat one, though." | |

A few cars whizzed by Derrick, their multi-colored blurs seemed to leave a lasting impression on his eyes. He sat in his car, listening to the deplorable news when suddenly everything went silent. There weren't any bright lights or anything, Maybe I am dieing...Shit am I having a heart attack...this can't be what dieing feels like. Derrick sat in his seat, motionless, suddenly he heard something. At first it was a whisper, nearly inaudible. As Derrick sat there he tried to move, but it was as if he was glued to the seat, his eyes darted about quickly, yet all he could sense was a small voice in his head. Oh God I am having a stroke... The whisper grew louder and louder, it began to cresendo, and Derrick felt as him his blood would boil, but soon the voice changed to a normal conversational tone. The tambor of the speaker was beautiful, her voice was soothing. Though there was no one in his car, Derrick could have sworn that the speaker was sitting right next to him. Greetings Derrick Palms, you have done well in our service so far. Please forgive us for the hasty measures we took to speak to you. Time is of the essence and we could not wait any longer. We hope that you have not become dissalusioned in your service to this city, for your task has just begun. Perhaps you do not fully understand just how weighty the issues you are dealing with are, but that is only natural. No amount of time could explain what is taking place then actual experience. You have been chosen by the Lord's holy command, you would do well to heed it. My brother the time of your trials has just begun. Our Savior walked forty days in the desert, and he too was tested. We have forseen great things in your future, and though these things are not easily attainalbe, we know that you have both the strength and the courage to do so. We have placed you at the destination where your true story shall begin, may you Derrick go with the light of the good Lord, and be unto him a servant of everlasting peace. Amen. "Amen." Derrick spoke the last word out of instinct, he awoke from the trance after saying the word. At first his head spun wildly, however the feelings subsided and Derrick raised his eyes to see that he was staring at a church. Some how Derrick had arrived at this destination, one thing he knew though was that he didn't drive. Go Derrick, your Destiny awaits, we will be watching, always ready lest you need us. And with the beautiful voice ringing in his ears, Derrick got out of his car, and proceeded into the church. |

Altria, still invisible flew up to the top of a large radio tower, watching all the tiny cars whiz by. She perched on one of the horozontal metal bars that hung off the tower and enjoyed the crisp breeze of the night air. She flinched and nearly fell off the tower as sharp claws dug into her hand. When she moved her arm in shock she realized there was a white dove desperately hanging onto her hand. The bird's wing was twisted into a shape Altria didn't think was possible, and its softly glowing white feathers were stained with crimson blood. She lifted her invisibility spell because it was wearing off, and there was no possibly way that someone could have followed her since she was both translucent and on top of a radio tower. She held the bird in her hands and concentrated on the wing. Healing it as well as she could, she let go of the bird and it flew up to perch above her, looking at her with innocent eyes. Altria leaned back on the bar and closed her eyes to rest. She was exhausted from healing both her own wing and the bird's wing. |

"Mare, was it? They call me Lane." “Lane, alright I like the sound of that. It’s simple. Let me tell you something Lane, I deserve to have this task done for me. Without a doubt I deserve this. The reason why…” he paused for a minute, wondering why exactly he did deserve this. Should people die simply because he wanted them to? It wasn’t that he cared much about the lives of others, and he wouldn’t exactly lose sleep contemplating the fine line between right and wrong. Her question had thrown him off. His mind had fallen into a frenzy of thoughts, all of which were contradictory. “Why do I deserve this… I guess I don’t really think I deserve it. I just want it. That’s kind of why I was hoping God would make a deal, a devotion for death kind of trade off. You know?” the question was rhetorical and he didn’t give her the time to answer before continuing, his voice quickening and the words coming faster. “I guess I don’t even know… the point is these people killed my buddy and tried to kill me. Now I’ve got a trunk full of coke that should have already been swapped for the cold hard cash Franchetti is expecting to see within the next two days. If I don’t get that money and then get it to him I won’t need a favor or a bodyguard just a memorial service because they won’t find enough of my body to warrant a funeral. You understand that Lane?” |

Le destin est une maîtresse terriblement cruelle, après tous, eh, am I right?" Not waiting for an answer, Svetlana continued. "I guess I could observe your situation, if you so see me fit to fulfill your request." She tipped her chin upwards, in a commanding gesture. "Inform me of what I would need to do first. Oh, and am I going to get anything in return? A reward, perhaps?" |

Hartigan was loosing patience, having downed two more of his mini-vodkas, he was getting pissed off and drowsy from the painkillers. He kept on hearing that same voice he heard after he smoked Mikey Franchetti, a voice that always changed, never the same, but always evil. "Fuck it, I am going in there..." Hartigan said, sliding his .45 into his holster and strapping his knife to his belt. Lighting a smoke, Hartigan took a deep draw before leaving his car and headed towards the church, ready to spill blood in the House of God, if need be. It was obvious to him, now. He was not one of those whom God favored, if he was, his family would be with him right now. The Detective reached into his shirt and pulled out a silver cross on a necklace, he paused a moment, then ripped the necklace from his neck and threw the cross to the ground, he was done with this; he was going to hell and he knew it. He might as well have the whole fucking Franchetti family there to greet him. |

Atria yawned lazily and the dove hopped onto her shoulder "you're still here?" she said softly to the bird. It cocked its head at her and fluffed its feathers. Absentmindedly stroking it, she said "well if you're going to stay with me you need a name..." she listed off several names and the bird looked at her with hopefull eyes when she said 'Amani' She sighed as she ruffled the bird's feathers "Amani... it means peace in swahili" the bird hopped onto her hand and fluttered its wings "you're probably hungry, aren't you?" she flew off the tower and cast a spell to make her orb and wings invisible, as well as change her appearance a little. She walked into a small cafe down the block from the church and ordered a small breakfast. Amani hopped onto the table and started exploring. Altria only was thinking about her home and if she would ever see it again. |

Selyna smiled softly as the human walked away from her. It would have been nice, pleasant even, but she sensed that it was now time to get back to work. She stopped at the double doors of the church, softly touching them. When the Catholics wanted to impress, they really knew how. These doors were tall and broad with intricate designs carved into each panel, showing the life of Christ. A demon she may be, but she still enjoyed the beauty of art. She pushed her hand on the door and pushed it open and there he was, Hartigan. A small breeze played with her hair as she watched him tear the cross from his neck and toss it aside. Well now... She stepped to one side, allowing him to pass while her curiosity took over and her decision to leave was delayed. |

As Derrick walked towards the church, he noticed someone going into the very same church. Though the man was a few paces ahead of him, Derrick was able to easily figure out who it was, Hartigan. Derrick watched as the detective tore something from his neck and threw it to the ground. Suddenly the doors opened and a woman walked out as Hartigan walked in. Derrick didn't know who the woman was, but he could tell that something was up as she stopped in her tracks and simply watched Hartigan enter the church. Suddenly it was as if time had stopped, Derrick recognized this feeling from his experience in the car. This time it seemed easier, less frightening, Derrick relaxed and let the wave of light hit him. Derrick, your destiny lies ahead of you. Do not be fooled by those who hide in the shadows, be aware of your surroundings, and know that all is not as it seems. Be warned Derrick, evil lies right before your eyes. We are watching you Derrick, waiting, go with the light and perform the Lords will. And as soon as it had began, the light faded, and time returned to normal. Derrick looked at the woman again, and saw something almost malicious in her, Derrick couldn't understand it, but he was intrigued, should I approach her? Derrick decided that inaction would get him no where, he walked towards the women at the church door. |

"I guess I could observe your situation, if you so see me fit to fulfill your request." Mare gave a small smirk. If he saw her fit? He had begun to feel as though he didn’t have many other options and she certainly seemed to feel as though she was the person to do the job, whatever the job was exactly. He hadn’t truly thought too much about God’s uninvited involvement in the lives of mere mortals. He had simply assumed that the Lord was a being that could only exist for you when invoked on your own terms. That he was a thing that existed only if you believed, like Santa Clause or the Tooth Fairy. That apparently wasn’t the case. Svetlana had made a good point; the fact that it should have been obvious was immaterial. God had indeed been the one responsible for his current predicament, if one wanted to believe in God at all that was. If Mare were to accept the fact that God had truly created the world, and all of the sin and scum within it, then he would also be accepting the fact that God had a respectable level of control over the way things went down. At the end of the day he supposed what he wanted was just a body guard after all. Because what he really needed was someone to make sure God didn’t get to give someone else the opportunity to kill him. "Inform me of what I would need to do first. Oh, and am I going to get anything in return? A reward, perhaps?" “Uhh sure, I guess… depending on what exactly you want. I just need you with me… that sounds awkward. You’ll have to understand I’m not thinking straight right now.” He paused long enough to sigh and cover his face with his hands momentarily. He thought about her mention of a reward before he spoke again and mentally cursed at himself for almost believing, even for a moment, that she would help him for free. When were even the simplest things free or easily attained, let alone protection over his life? He supposed he was willing to pay if it meant he was increasing his time on the Earth. “I need you to look out for me, have my back. You know?” |

Nothing eventful happened during his slow walk home. Only thing that happened was some lady got mugged in front of him but no one even stopped to ask if she was alright. Delvan gave her five dollars without something. Delvan same on his bed in his one room apartment and leaned over to turn on his little t.v. then he had to fiddle with the antennas to get reception of just one of the local channels. He watched the big pile up on the news a he caught a glimpse at what looked like one of the girls in the pews at the church. Other than that it was mugging and smuggling reports and interviews with some of the police officers. Finally he shut off the t.v and fell back into his pillow as he looked at his cracking ceiling. "Why does this world have to be so hellishly evil." He asked, "Is the any good left? any hope for salvation?" |

Altria stood up on the bar and streched her wings out, as Amani immitated her. She flew high above the streets, level with the buildings "Why does this world have to be so hellishly evil? Is the any good left? any hope for salvation?" she heard a faint voice as she flew next to one of the windows. Hovering, she looked in, her face masked by the night. She didn't see much because of the darkness, but there was the faint glow of a television screen, and that was all Altria could see. Amani landed on the window sill and hopped into the apartment. Altria quickly grabbed at the bird, but she was already inside. The small dove hopped onto the couch and fluffed its feathers, going to sleep. Altria didn't want to leave the bird there, but she usually flew around and excersized her wings and powers at night, but tonight she sat back on the roof and watched the stars. salvation the word rang in her mind clearly. She was the hope on the earth. The stupid angels wouldn't do anything, they were just sitting around waiting for something that would never happen. The demons were the only equal beings to the angels since humans and animals weren't immortal, but they didn't want to help, they only wanted to cause trouble and destroy. She was the closest being to an angel found on earth. with that thought, she drifted off to sleep. Edited by Lumina, 12 Oct 2008, 10:12 PM.

There is no Salvation, only Damnation. There is no Heaven, only the pits of Hell. There is no Light, only Darkness. There is no Hope, only Dread. There is no Comfort, only... "...PAIN!" Hartigan hissed through bloody teeth as he pulled a 9mm bullet out of his shoulder. The pings of bullets hitting metal could be heard ont he other side of the detective's car. He made a fatal mistake; he underestimated the enemy, now he was paying for it. Hartigan popped up from his cover to fire a few potshots into the approaching enemy gunman. It always confused the fuck out of him when the mob had better guns than the cops, "...this is fucking bullshit!!!" He yelled to himself as he fumbled for another magazine to load in his pistol. He grumbled and growled to the world around him, saying how much he hated everything. Then, it happened... Hartigan could feel the searing pain of AK-47 rounds going through the gnarled form of his car and right into his back. His lung was punctured as the bullet began to ricochet around inside the detectives ribcage. His eyes bugged as he seized up and fell over. His breathing was ragged and taxed, blood dribbling out of the detectives mouth and nose and tear ducts. Another mobster walked around the car to finish him off. Hartigan fired his pistol and hit the man in the foot, then fired on the man's form as it fell. The click of a needle hitting nothing sounded from his pistol, he dropped the magazine and reached for another, but his supply was out. Again, another mobster came, and again Hartigan dispatched him by throwing his knife into the soft of the man's neck, severing the jugular. The detective could hear his heartbeat slowing, the whole world seemed to slow down, the darkness began to creep in around his vision. The stars seemed to swirl about the world in a grant ballet, except for two stars that lay in the center of his vision. The stars became glowing red eyes, the darkness of the night sky turned into the face of Lucifer himself, laughing coldly at the dying policeman. There is no Salvation, only Damnation. There is no Heaven, only the pits of Hell. There is no Light, only Darkness. Hartigan, sweet Hartigan. You do not have to die here, your work is so valuable to me and mine, it would be tragic for you to join me before your time. I know you fear death, you long for it, but you fear it with the entirety of your black soul. Your release from this world is not going according to my plan. You have so much more work to do... I can help you... "How...?" Your blood has been spilt. Look, you lie in a lake of it. Use it as ink on this contract. Sign my Book, pay this small price and you can finish your quest, you can avenge your family, at looong lassst... "I know what you're going to do... You are going to take my soul... I wo-" Ah-ah-ah! Don't be so hasty! Yes, I will have your soul, but it is already so black, so tainted by the blood you have spilt. Become my Harbinger! Become the power that is older than God, older than me, older than al things. Become the essence of my existence! be the counter of the Light! Become the Darkness, and all you want will be at your fingertips... and you'll pay the price for your freedoms, Maxi... "Alright... Alright... I'll do it... You have a point. I have nothing left to lose, my soul shouldn't be that much of a loss..." Hartigan signed his name on the concrete beneath him, using his blood and fingers to spell it out. He then felt the darkness of the abyss envelop him as he passed from one state of being to the next. Rest easy, Maxi... You will awaken to a new day, a day of Darkness and Despair. Your hatred will be the sun and your pain the moon. Rest now, child... and be reborn... Then, Hartigan died. *** The sound of static came over the scanner of Derrick Palms' car, the female voice frantic, +Detective Palms, we have an officer down at the corner of Gettiesburg street and Jacksonn Ave. Officer Hertigan is hit, possibly KIA. We need you to confirm and hold the position until paramedics arive, over.+ *** On the corner of Gettiesburg and Jackson, a man lay in a black puddle on the cold ground. Hie held nothing on his person but a picture of a woman, heavy with child, and a sweet three-year-old girl. Crude hearts were drawn around the woman's and child's head, and the woman's swollen belly. For the first time Hartigan could remember, he was at peace. Just out of reach from his other hand, was a silver cross on a silver chain. Hartigan's rosary. He lost it when he fell, and in his last moments, he tried to grasp it. Around the detective, everything was chaos. The shadows seemed to come alive and devour the already living. The darkness itself attacked those who still lived. When Darrick would arrive, he would see things any person, sane or not, would only see in the pits of hell. Blood and guts everywhere; men torn limb form limb, their heads torn from their shoulders and placed on the spikes of the rot iron fences. It looked like a Clive Barker film gone Saw, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Hannibal, and overall gory. Intestine and other organs lay strewn about, the concrete floor was streaked with so much blood it appeared black. And in the center of it all was Hartigan, his cold and dead body laid there with a smug and cruel smile of victory over his face. Not long now... "I won't kill my friends..." You have no choice... "I do have a choice. Is still have my faith." NO! You cannot! Muuust Not! "I will do as i please! You may have my soul on contract, but as long as I have my life, my soul is mine!" Damn you boy! "Fuck you, Satan!" And with a gasp, Hartigan awoke... His life hanging by a thread, but he was alive... "For fuck sake, girl... please tell me you got my message and called Derrick..." He wheezed to himself. |

As Derrick approached the church he heard something faintly behind him, at first it was unclear and so he stopped. Derrick listened intently, perhaps it was one of those angels again. Derrick strained to hear where the noise was coming from, he looked at the church, and decided too go back and find the noise. As he retraced his steps Derrick quickly became aware that the noise was coming from his car, he opened it up and listened, it was the scanner, I repeat, Derrick Palms, we have an officer down at the corner of Gettiesburg street and Jackson Ave. Officer Hertigan is hit, possibly KIA. We need you to confirm and hold the position until paramedics arrive, over. In an instant Derrick got into the car and turned on the ignition, DAMMIT, hold on Hartigan! Derrick quickly sped off, he knew in his heart that this was what the Angel's had wanted, their true intentions were just hidden. *** Derrick pulled up too Gettiesburg Street, and quickly examined the situation, Hartigan was down, lying in a pool of his own blood. Derrick quickly rushed out to him and checked his pulse, at first it was gone. Derrick checked again, and miraculously it had returned, though it was very faint. Derrick looked up to see if any one the assailants remained at the scene. It appeared that they had all left. *** Derrick walked next to Hartigan as the Paramedics carried him away, "Hey Hartigan, if you can hear me, first of all your one tough sonofabitch," Derrick smiled at him, "and secondly, don't you die on me. I'm working this case now, I'm going to find the bastards who did this to you, and as soon as your ready, then well get them together. So you get well soon!" Derrick waved to him as they loaded him onto the ambulance, deep in his heart he knew he'd be alright, right now Derrick had a crime to solve. He looked at the C.S.I. who had just arrived on the scene, he hadn't seen her before. She was short, had blonde hair, and was very attractive, there was not doubt about it, Derrick walked up to her, "Are you knew here Miss?" Derrick smiled at her, she looked at him with deep blue eyes, "Yes I am, first time on the field, names Jennifer, but you can call me Jen." She extended her hand for a shake, which Derrick returned, "All right Jen, looks like we got a case to solve, watch out though, might be a little horrific this being your first time at a scene." "Look, I am sure I can handle...oh god," she drew back a few steps and covered her mouth, Derrick walked up to her, and tried to help her. He stepped in front of her field of vision, and blocked her from seeing the crime scene. "Are you going to be ok?" "Yeah I just need a minute." Derrick tried to smile at her to cheer her up, but she just stared at the ground. "Well Jen, welcome to Patriot City, stick with me and you'll be ok." |

Delvan was tired he was beginning to drift into his own world of what ever he wanted; sleep was a great thing. Delvan salvation is coming you must not give up. "Wha- who- who's there?" Do not be afraid; I go before you always. "God is that you?" Yes my son it is I. And I will raise you up on eagles wings, and bear you on the breath of dawn and make you to see life anew. Delvan quickly dart up his bed. He swung his leg on to his couch and rub his head inside his head. The end of the last sentence faded of into the night but the words the meaning still rung crisply in his head. when he looked up a dove was laying on the couch. "A dove on my apartment?! God?" The dove looked up at him and cocked it's head. Delvan slowly picked it up and climbed up the fire escape to the top of the building. He saw a girl starring at the stars or lack of stars the light life bustled below with bright light taking the edge of the brightness and beauty of the night. He slowly bent to his knees and set the dove on the roof. |

Altria heard footsteps behind her, and the flutter of tiny wings. Amani flew onto her shoulder and fluffed her feathers, as if to say can't you see I'm trying to sleep here? why do you keep waking me up? Altria stroked the dove and stood up to face the man who had brought Amani back to her "t-thank you for taking Amani out of your apartment" she looked over her shoulder at the bird who was peeking at her through squinted eyelids wondering when she would stop talking and go to sleep. |

Selyna watched as the man watched her and then turned around. She raised an eyebrow, curious as to why he suddenly just walked away and toward his car. After a few seconds he jumped into his car and drove off. Quickly she looked around and made sure that no one was watching, unfurled her wings and took to the sky. She followed his car until it came to a crime scene. The scene below made her smile and a little homesick, though she preferred to stay away from such gruesome scenes. Landing on a building, making sure to stay out of the light, she watched as the man got Hartigan into an ambulance. "By the looks of things, he crossed over." She shrugged, "Looks like my job's over with him. Now someone else gets to babysit him." Smiling at that thought she turned her gaze over to the detective and narrowed her eyes, "Fuck." She could see the protective glow around him and knew that the other side had gotten to him first. "Well, that's not my job either." She jumped into the sky and took off, a wide grin on her face. "Looks like Selyna gets a mini-vacation." Now if only she could get away with it without the Boss knowing. |

Altria cocked her head questioningly at the man, and then realized it was probably too dark to see that she had wings. She lit her orb with a flick of her finger. "well normally I would have been trying to kill some gangsters or something but Amani decided to go to sleep on your couch so... well I didn't want to sit on the street." she said awkwardly, shuffling her feet. Suddenly the bird ruffled her feathers and squawked right in Altria's ear, knocking her off balance. She fluttered her wings and stumbled into Delvan Edited by Lumina, 17 Oct 2008, 10:49 PM.

Delvan was blinded by the instant light for just a second then he stood hypnotized by the sleek black wings attached to her back. He was awestruck by the pure beauty of the sight it took her stumbling into him to break the spell. "Wha- who-what- what are-you?" He stammered. He could feel his knee's starting to give a away. He took a step back after she had caught her balance. |

Altria regained her balance and looked at the floor. The bird shot her a look and flew to the edge of the building, fluffing her feathers to go to sleep. "I'm uh.... a... halfbreed" the world 'halfbreed' stung her mouth. Normally when someone called her that she would either shout at them or hurt them, but since her wings were feathered and black she couldn't be an angel OR a demon. "my name is Altria" she said softly |

"Halfbreed What do you mean?" Delvan was confused he was just a normal man with a normal life living in a dangerous city. He rubbed his head as he sat down were he was and rested his back against the raised ledge on the edge of the building. |

Altria sighed. She hated talking about being an angel with mortals because they always saw her as some 'divine savior' and she was really just a girl. "half angel half demon" she said shakily. Seeing him sitting down, she awkwardly sat down and folded her wings behind her. |
