THE KEEP

The Kingdom of Hlaalo was behind them now as the group was deep in the woods, following the Great Path. The thick foliage held back the sun's light, allowing darkness to settle in the lands. It was here, in these woods that trouble lurked.

It was said that due to Zonab and Hlaalo's differences, they often had troubles keeping peace in the woods as the wood elves would let evil creatures run between their lands in the fun of hunting them.

Sadly, the colorful cobblestone laid path had ended a great distance back and now were but dirt roads they walked upon. Impehj didn't mind much though. Most of the relief was given due to the horses they were given by the High Elves.

As they lot trotted, Impehj could only hope they made it to his homeland, the Great Collective of Hrish. It had been a long time since he had been back to his birthplace. He could only remember of when his outer region was attacked when he was young, only to be taken further away from his place and into battle.

His only connections with the kingdom was through messengers. The tension never left his mind and so his mind was concentrated on the area around them for any possible incoming danger.

Due to no true group leader, all were told to maintain balance and order within the group to make a good first impression for the other kingdoms. They were getting closer to the other kingdom as it only took half a day to reach with a steady pace.

Reila skipped through the woods humming a quiet tune. She knew that something was amiss, but really wasn't sure what. She slowed to a stop and looked around after hearing rustling sounds. A few moments passed and she began to walk slowly, not sure if she would hear it again.

She used her staff as a walking stick and continued to walk until she reached the end of the woods and peered around. She smiled at the sight and took a deep breath and let it out. What a sight she thought, but the thought of danger lingered in her mind.

Diedorma hated the feel of the moist grass under foot. She missed her homelands, the endless rocky paths, the huge canyans and tall barren mountains. She felt something scwelch between her toes and tried not to look at the dead animal's fleeing ghost, she didn't really want to know how disgusting it was, and she prayed that the grass would wipe it off and she wouldn't have to remove any later.

She was a little to the side of the rest of the group. She didn't feel comfortable with them. She was not part of the official envoy, she just knew that she would be needed. But why a forest, she thought to herself, why not a desert, why couldn't they have this fight in the desert. She gazed upwards, her mind suddenly unfocused slightly, and she could see that it was going to be a clear night, filled with stars. She smiled, she loved night. In the wastelands, you died if you spent all day walking in the sun, she had come to love walking at night, when it was freezing and she could feel the night winds on her naked arms. And at night the air would be thick with the memories of souls, all vibrating and making her hair static, and her skin tingle.

But there were no souls in this forest, what soul would come to feel freedom here? It was oppressive, there was too much noise, and the whole place reeked of life.

Deidorma looked again at the group. She wondered what they thought of her addition to their numbers. Do they think i'm a spy, or a sabotager? She could search their souls, but the search was unlikely to produce anything about her, she was not enough of presense in their lives yet for them to care so much about her that their souls would be affected. And it was intrusive. And the sorceress might notice, and she wasn't sure how to react around her yet... She had never spent anytime with anyone like herself before. it will be interesting, i wonder if it will show me anything new? she wondered.

((okay, so the tread is dying - perhaps a little action will lively it up? ^-^ Hope this is okay))

I heard noise coming from the forest so quickly jumpped into a tree. Three humans appeared from the shadows, the moon illuminating them in its light.

"Hm...?" My cat ears twitched at the sight of one of them stepping in a dead animal carcus. Ew...

"Wonder where they are heading?" I softly muttered, looking at the other woman. In the distance, an elf village was nearby. Wonder if they're heading there? If so, then why?

"Hm..." I fixed my glasses & silently jump to a tree nearer to the woman with a staff. I don't really ever see humans in the forest, & besides, I've been bored. Mind as well follow & see what happens.

*Crack*

Wait... what was that sound?

I looked down to see I chose poorly on which branch to jump on. This one was just a tad too thin to support my light weigh. However, as I jumpped away from the branch, I slipped & fell out of the reach of trees altogether.

"Ow...~" I whined, looking at my bloodied right palm. "Geez, since when am I so clumpsy?"

Deidorma was focusing on the local fauna when she felt something begin to follow them. She could feel its spirit thriving inside some sort of strange animal. She heard a crack, and it was only long years of training that prevented her from twisting her head round, she could smell blood, and adrenaline and she did not recognise the species!
"What are you? And why do you follow us?" she called.
She stood on the edge of the trres with her eyes staring straight ahead, nt searching, just waiting for an answer.

Reila's ears picked up a crashing sound and quickly turned around. It was close, but where. She looked straight in the direction of the crash and saw someone had fallen from a weak branch which had broken. There was also another person there as well.

Curious she thought and quietly ran in that direction and jumped into a tree and watched the sight.

"I'm a cat demon..." I moaned, licking my wound clean as I stood. "If you looked at me you'll see for yourself. I suppose to humans you'll describe me as a female with black cat ears & tail." I glanced over at the other female human.

"& I was not following you!" I pointed out. "Your the ones who came to me. But, please don't worry, I won't harm you!" I softly smiled. "I'm not one for attacking first. Anyway, by any chance, why are you heading for the elf village?" I asked out of pure curiousity. Maybe I could provide some help, or something. I was new to this land after running away from my old one so mine as well start getting to know people! Human or not, it was company.

Deidorma looked carefully at the little cat demon. She had never seen something as peculiar. "She's not lying, beyond that can not say anything, someone else will have to make a decision about her ... it is not mine to make." She backed away from the creature. "Reila, i would trust your judgement, but anyone is free to make the choice... I will help you if you require it, i have the ability to quieten a spirit you have killed, it will never haunt you."

"Well," Reila said jumping down from the tree and examined the feline closer. "I think, but it is my own opinion, that the cat is harmless." She took a step closer and leaned over towards her. "Yes, she is harmless, unlike her full feline counterparts."

"Miu?" I blinked twice at the girl called "Reila" who was standing quite close to me... a little too close.

"Anyway, yes!" I smiled, taking a couple steps back, "So why are heading tot he elf village again? Maybe you could take me there!" I smiled, getting an idea. "I'm new to this land & therefore don't know anyone, so I was wondering if you could help inform me about this place!"

"We are going to stay at the village for the night," Reila said. "I have some allies there that are allowing us to stay at their home. You are welcomed to come, if it's alright with everyone else in the group."

Reila looked around the woods and smiled. "Don't worry. You have a new friend in me."

Diedorma looked immpassively at the cat - demon. Then she nodded, "Who am i to refuse anyone? I was not invited either."

Then she looked shrewdly at Reila, she was trusting and kind, and she accepted people no matter their appearance... cat demon pfff! this land was disgusting, it threw up all manner of strange beasts, and Deidorma was sick of it. Why could their be some normal Screamers? or even a small soul-eater? And she had become homesick for the cry of a Ezrylite as the sun went down, when would she hear them again?
