*Four months have gone by since the first case broke out. Four months since their lives all turned upside down. London fell first, then Manchester afterwards. Gene'll forever be proud of that. All those posh hoity-toity Southerners, coming up 'ere, bringing their diseases! But it's nothing to laugh about, not really. The virus spreads fast, claiming every city, town and village in the country. Nowhere is safe, or so the radio says. Stay in your houses, lock the doors, don't go out for any reason. But of course that instantly sent everyone into a panic, and now the roads are clogged with abandoned and burnt out vehicles, unpassable even with Gene's extensive knowledge of the city's backstreets. They were all in the station when it went down - reports of crazed citizens biting and savaging other members of the public. News reports from London had prepared them all for what was to come, but seeing it in the flesh was another thing altogether. Mrs Peterson from the local offie, knawing on Mr Sajib's leg like a chicken drumstick, blood everywhere... They knew they'd have to put her down, but shooting at a familiar face, eyes white and mouth red, hissing and gargling coming from her throat? Nobody could have been ready for that. They did what they could with the resources the had until finally the city collapsed and chaos took over. Looting and fires, death and destruction were everywhere. People fleeing to the country, people arriving fleeing from the country, people barricading themselves indoors, camping out on rooftops... It was like something from a film. With half of the force already bitten and turned, the remaining police had no choice but to lock themselves in the station and sit it out for a while. And though he hated sitting about and waiting, Gene had to admit that the station was the best place for them to be. There were secure areas like the cells, a canteen with a mostly full larder. Enough storeys for them to watch the city and stairs for when the power finally was cut to the lift. The power switching off was part of what finally did it. The fridge and freezer warmed, ruining half of the already dwindling food supplies. Everybody had known that the station couldn't be a permanent fortress from the horrors outside, and it was now time to venture out. The running water went with the electricity, and people were needing to go out on food and water collections. That lasted a couple more weeks until finally the lack of supplies began to turn people on each other. Then they hear the battery operated radio crackle. Salvation, a fortified camp up north. Only a few hours drive on a clear motorway, but with no vehicle it'd take weeks to walk it. More, considering the slow and cautious pace they'd have to take. But with supplies running low and morale at breaking point, it was a risk they'd have to take. Appointing himself leader (as if anyone would have objected) and Sam as second on command, Gene posed an ultimatum. Anyone who wanted to fight for a chance to survive could join him. Anyone who wanted to waste away in this godforsaken building could starve to death on their own. What was left of CID and a few other officers accepted, filling their police rucksacks with as much bottled water and canned food as they could reasonably take from the others, guns - lots of guns, and set off, bound for the various shops they needed things from. Pop up tents, knives, more weapons, toothpaste, matches... Anything of use. A few fell during the mission, but mostly the run was a success, lasting a few days with them using a shop as a Base. And now, Gene walks next to Sam as they navigate their way through yet another car-obstructed road. They're out of Manchester now, but the shelter is still weeks away. Progress has been slow. Humans have turned out to be just as dangerous as the bloody zombies so far - ambushing anyone they could for supplies. Vince was bitten on the leg not far out of the city. It took 12 hours for the fever to finally finish him off, and then another whole five minutes for Gene to pull himself together enough to strike the final blow. He won't have one of his own walking around like one of those monsters. With their slowly diminishing group in tow, they keep walking. Night'll be setting in soon... Two hours or so and it'll be dark. Gene turns to Sam, chin peppered with stubble and dirt smudged on his face, voice rough with the effort of keeping his legs moving* S'gonna get dark soon... Should try to find somewhere to sleep. *looks past his partner at the dark abandoned houses on one side of the street, focusing on the one at the end - more windows for escape routes that way. * Think Mr and Mrs Undead'll mind if we squat for the night? |

*Chris continues, out of breath. "The boss! He's... He's alive...! In the cells, they... They put a bed in there for 'im' in.. in case-!" First, Gene's startled by the door flying open, still conditioned to react to every little sound. But then... Chris! Jesus, he really is alive! And then the news. Sam, he's okay. He's okay, thank God!! A huge sigh of utter relief escapes him as the tension leaves him. God, they made it... They both made it... But the cells... Why--? Surely Sam needs medical attention?? A bed in the cells? That's not-- That's not right! Without hesitation, Gene tries once more to throw the covers back and get out of bed - he needs to see Sam see for himself that he's okay. Get him the hell out of the cells!* |

*Annie is struggling to keep up with Chris' breathless stammering, with his message, because it... it can't be, can it...?! Sam can't be alive.....! But before she can reply, she sees movement out of the corner of her eyes - shit, no, Gene can't get up yet! "Guv, no!" She catches his arm before he's able to throw off the covers, trying to push him back down as gently as possible. "You can't - you're not strong enough, you need rest!" Turning her head back to Chris, she calls over her shoulder, "Slow down, Chris - what are you talking about...?!" If Sam is alive, then why the cells? "In case"... what?!* |

*Chris's eyes widen at the sight of the Guv - he's been too wrapped up in watching what's happened with Sam that he hasn't even seen--! Shell-shocked, he stammers. "The boss... 'e t-turned up and fainted right in the middle of the street! He's alive! Not one of those... Things!" Chris takes a wobbly step forward, shock plain on his he face. "They think... They think he might still... You know-!" Unable to say the words, Chris just makes a claw-like motion with his hands, exposing his teeth and gnashing. Without the strength to fight Annie, Gene flops down, exhausted. They don't believe Sam's not going to turn. They think he's still dangerous... God, what a mess. Desperate, Gene pants out.* He's not turned for... Weeks.... You tell 'em... To let' im out right... Right the hell now. I need to... Need to see 'im...! |

*There's a moment of silence as Annie stares at Chris, turns to look down at Gene, and back at Chris. So Sam didn't die. By some miracle, he's alive. He and Gene both continued the journey up here... Gene somehow got hurt... and now...! ... right. Right. "Chris, stay here with the Guv, make sure he doesn't try and get out of bed." She taps the chair before grabbing a first aid kit - just in case... and Chris looks like he needs to sit down for a while anyway. Turning back to Gene, Annie puts on her best "I'm in control"-voice, pulling herself up to stand straight. "I'll go sort this out." And with that, she's out of Gene's room, hurrying through a short hallway and out into the open. She knows where the cells are, though it'll take her a few minutes to get there... they're right on the other end of the village...* |

*Gene watches Annie with desperate and grateful eyes - once Cartwright gets her mind set on something she'll do her absolute best. She won't stop until she's gotten Sam out, that he's sure of. The knowledge calms his nerves enough for him to let the stress and worry go just a bit. He just has to trust Annie. There's nothing he can do, not with his leg the way it is and his muscles trembling with the remnants of his fever. As Annie whisks out of the room, Chris takes a slightly shakey step forwards, sliding down in the bedside chair stiffly. Seeing the Guv after all this time... it's surreal. He was sure--! Swallowing, he utters his first words to Gene since the big goodbye. "Guv. Can't... I can't believe it...!"* |

*In a different part of the village, Sam is slowly starting to wake up. The first thing he's consciously aware of is that he feels absolutely horrible. It's almost as though he's feverish again, waiting for the bite to kill and turn him. His head is hammering with pain, his mouth is dry, his tongue feeling like sandpaper. Even with his eyes closed, it feels like the world around him is in constant motion, swaying and swirling... Sam groans against the sensation - and realises that something else is off. There's not just that horribly dry and sticky feeling in his mouth, there's something else... cold and metallic, on his tongue, between his teeth... Sam's jaw tenses reflexively, and comes up against entirely unyielding resistance. What... Sam groans again, trying to move, to curl up, but... he can't. There's firm pressure around his wrists. ... what the hell....?! Fear starts to dissolve the dizziness and exhaustion, until Sam manages to force his eyes open.* |

*There's a nurse on standby, they've made sure of that. A nurse and a soldier. Just in case. One or the other. They'll know which once they've given Sam a proper check over. A bite like this.... It's never been seen before. Rob stands at the edge of the cell, watching as they strap Sam down to the bed and put the metal between his teeth. Everyone seems to back up Sam's story of it being old - but they can't endanger the group by just blindly trusting. Sam may well be telling the truth - but Rob brought him here, and if Sam turns out to be lying, he's going to correct his mistake. He hopes Sam's telling the truth. He really does. Sam's eyes flicker open and Rob finds himself clutching at the gun resting at his hip.* 'Ey... You still you? |

*Sam turns his head sluggishly in the direction of Rob's voice - the room is spinning around him, his vision refusing to focus. There's a blob that looks vaguely familiar, and Sam wants to rub his eyes, but again, his hands remain locked in place by his sides. He's... he's trapped. Bound in place. The realization sends a spike of panic through him and Sam grunts against the metal wedged between his teeth. His ankles are bound as well, and there's straps across his abdomen, giving no leeway as he tries to push against them - he can't move. He can't defend himself. Sam grunts again, a desperate and angry sound, his jaw clenching painfully around the metal as he turns his head back to where he thinks Rob is standing - what the hell is going on?! What's going to happen now...?!* |

*Seeing Sam's distress, Rob steps forward enough for Sam to be able to see him. Other than the lie Sam told, he hasn't shown any reason not to like him - and Rob doesn't want to freak him out any more than necessary. "Okay, don't panic. We're just taking precautions. Okay? Until we know for sure you're not infected." He turns to the nurse and nods, giving her permission to start examining the bite. "You went through a fever then? At the start?"* |

*One of the blobs moves forward, and finally Sam's eyes focus enough to make out that it is indeed Rob who's talking to him. Precautions. They still don't believe him... Sam can't blame them for that, he knows that deep down - this village is in such a unique position, they've managed to stay safe for so long, they need to be extra careful... But he's weak, he's scared - for both himself and Gene. Christ, he doesn't even know where Gene is... whether or not they managed to save him... Sam turns his head so that he's staring at the ceiling again, exhaling forcefully. Keep calm. It's just an examination. He knows he isn't infected, so there's nothing to fear... Except for the possibility that it might all go wrong. Sam can't shake the resurfacing memory of how it went down with the cannibals... And this time, he's even more defenseless... Rob could shoot him on the spot. Sam closes his eyes, trying to calm his breathing. Then, in response to Rob's question, he nods with a low, affirming grunt.* |

*Okay. Sam's cooperating. That's a good sign. The nurse moves forward, pressing on Sam's temple just a little to turn his head sideways and expose the bite. She gives it a quick look over before bending and picking up a pre-dampened cloth from her kit. All those nights sleeping rough - both men Rob brought in were covered in mud and grime. Carefully she wipes and dabs at the scarring, washing away the dirt so she can see better. Rob pipes up again, knowing this isn't exactly the most fun experience for Sam. "You had any lingering effects from this, then? Looks as though it's started to scar up. Nothing's changed?"* |

*Sam's eyes are open again by the time the nurse is by his side, and he follows her every move until she tilts his head to the side, exposing the bite. It already had been awkward having Gene tend to it, all those weeks ago when Sam was still recovering from the fever. Back then, having the area touched by someone else left Sam feeling faintly nauseous and with a strange tingling sensation under his skin that lasted for hours. And even later, it still felt strange. Vulnerable and sensitive. The only time Sam had been able to forget about his discomfort was that one night in the forest, in that half-demolished shack. Now, knowing that his (and possibly Gene's) life depends on how this examination goes, and knowing that he's being scrutinized by potentially hostile eyes, his jaw forced open as it is, keeping him from talking - it's worse than it's ever been. His overall fatigue and dehydration must be playing their parts as well; Sam's skin is crawling where the nurse touches it, and even though the bite has finally begun to scar over, the moisture coming in contact with it is sending a burning sensation up Sam's neck and into his skull, making him flinch and groan with discomfort and squeeze his eyes shut. Rob's intentions may be good, but at that moment, Sam really could do without being bombarded with further questions. He shakes his head as best as he can, both glad and cursing the fact that he can't make eye contact with Rob right now - how idiotic is it to try and keep up this interrogation while even the tiny means of communicating Sam has is even further limited?!* |

*Rob knows Sam can't answer well - but it's too awkward just standing there and watching, especially since he's gotten to know Sam a little already. So he gives a nod and keeps going. "Good. That's encouraging." The nurse finishes wiping the bite down and presses a towel to it to dry it, then leaning in and giving it another good look. The teeth marks are very visible, indented slightly in Sam's skin. The fresh scars are dark and purpleish red - clearly still sensitive. The skin around it is pink, but with a slightly darker tone to it - like a bruise that's in the last stages of disappearing. It may not he pretty, but it's healing, that's for sure. The nurse places her hand on Sam's forehead, checking for a fever. Next, she looks deep into Sam's eyes - but there's no discolouration at all. Apart from looking tired and uncomfortable, Sam seems unaffected. She turns to Rob. "He's not in the process of turning - I don't know how the hell it's possible, but it looks as though he survived unscathed!"* |

*The seconds seem to be crawling by at a snail's pace, and when the nurse looks into his eyes Sam can't help but search her face - she literally holds his life in her hands... please, please let her be more reasonable than the cannibal doctor...! Then, her words. Sam lets out the breath he's been holding and closes his eyes. Suddenly, he feels so... so tired. Opening his eyes again (with some difficulty), Sam looks over at Rob, hoping that now the verdict's been given, he'll be untied and that stupid piece of metal removed from his mouth...!* |

*Rob lets out a relieved huff of air. "You're sure? He's not a danger?" The nurse gives a little shrug. "He's showing none of the usual signs of infection. With a bite that old he should be well and truly dead by now. God knows how it happened." Rob nods, even further relieved. "Good. Good. Jesus, just think... If he's immune... *If Sam were in better condition, he would be interested in what Rob and the nurse are talking about - but dehydrated and weak as he is, and completely focused on getting out of this uncomfortable and still potentially dangerous position, their words don't really register anymore. His vision is beginning to blur again, his jaw is aching, his head spinning... Sam groans in protest, trying to get their attention, to get them to finally untie him-- Then, distant raised voices. A few moments later, quick footsteps. And then-- Annie, having arrived at the cell. She's slightly out of breath, but she stands tall, ready to address Rob - when her gazes locks on Sam. Christ, he really... he's alive. Sam is alive. Annie is momentarily speechless, her eyes wide, face pale.* |

*Rob jumps at the sudden intrusion - Annie just barged in with no warning - and now it looks like she's just had the shock of her life! *Annie registers Rob's words, but it takes a second or two before her body follows and she looks at him. Right. She came here for a reason. Despite her heart beating fast and hard, she gathers herself, finds her voice. "I know." Anger rises within her - they tied Sam down like some animal... Even if they thought he might still be dangerous, there was no reason to go that far. And from the looks of it, they didn't care to give him any kind of basic treatment first... if Gene's state is anything to go by - and didn't Chris say Sam collapsed outside? - Sam is in a bad way. So she continues, pointing at Sam, "He's my best friend, and I thought he was dead or worse-- and, and I know you have to ensure everyone's safety here, but this-- this is not acceptable. He's starved, dehydrated, he needs help. Not a-- a piece of metal between his teeth." Annie's voice makes Sam's head snap around so fast that it leaves him utterly disoriented. He can't tell apart the blobs that are standing a few feet away from him, but he'd recognise that voice anywhere. Annie. God, Annie.* |

*Damn, she looks angry. Rob hasn't seen Annie like this before. Granted he's not known her for that long, but he'd thought he'd become a reasonably good friend... Startled by her tone, Rob moves quickly, starting to undo the buckle holding the gag in place. "Of course.... We just needed to make sure he couldn't bite if he, you know... " Finally, he pulls the gag away and motions to the nurse. She'd better start properly tending to Sam now. "I didn't know you knew him-?" * |

*Sam's jaw gives an audible crack as he's finally allowed to close his mouth, and he gives a low grown as he turns his head away from Rob - Jesus Christ, finally... He blinks his eyes trying to clear his vision, but the room around him keeps pitching and going out of focus... Under different circumstances, Annie would have felt bad - Rob looks pretty guilty now, obviously startled by her tone of voice. But this is an extraordinary situation. This is Sam, being the extraordinary, strange, somehow out-of-place human being he's been from the start. How he keeps managing to do it, she doesn't know, and it unnerves her; and at the same time, of course, there is the incredible relief welling, starting to overwhelm everything else. Sam is alive. She takes a deep breath and nods, watching as the nurse moves in again, this time presumably to take Sam's blood pressure or something like that. "Well, I'm glad you managed to establish at least that." Alright, she needs to calm down - Rob did what he had to do. He just as well have shot Sam on the spot, Annie is well aware of that. So she continues, softening her tone, "He... he's one of our superior officers, the ones who... who fell behind. Him and Gene." As she speaks, her eyes are locked on Sam - Christ, he looks so deadly pale... Hearing Annie talk again, Sam turns his head back towards the cell doors, though the change in position does nothing to relieve the dizziness. Suddenly, he's scared that he's just imagining that it's her - that he's hallucinating... thirst does that to your brain, doesn't it... he mutters her name without realizing what he's doing. Annie catches that murmur, and for a moment her emotions threaten to overwhelm her. Her voice somewhat unsteady, she asks, grabbing one of the metal bars, "Please, can I come in?"* |

*Half forgetting that she's still on the other side of the bars, Rob steps forward and starts undoing the lock. He was only doing what he had to to help keep the place safe - but still, seeing how Sam's being treated through the innocent eyes of someone who knows him? It does make him feel slightly ashamed. The things they've come to view as normal... It's shocking when you look back at it. As the door opens, the nurse is already getting an IV line ready, tapping the inside of Sam's immobile arm to try and find a vein. Rob stands aside, allowing Annie to rush over. "He'll take fluids through a drip - should help to get him back on his feet... " Annie reaches Sam's bedside in a heartbeat, eyes roaming over the straps covering Sam's wrists still before settling on his face. Gently, she cups his cheek and tries to get him to look at her. *The sensation of hands touching him again, without his permission, makes Sam's skin crawl - the last time that happened, Gene was stabbed and 'made ready' to be eaten later, and Sam nearly had his throat slashed. And before that, it was months of being on his guard, of having to doubt everyone and anyone they came across on their journey... It makes him tense his muscles, though the straps prevent Sam from being able to really shy away. His eyes had fallen shut again, but when he feels that touch to his cheek, Sam forces them open again. It takes a second or two, but with how close Annie is, he's finally able to focus on her. Her face. Jesus... it's really her. He hadn't allowed himself to hope he'd ever see her again - not after Gene's injury. Sam's eyes widen a little, and the words are out before he knows it, though his voice sounds nearly unrecognizable with how rough it is.* ... are you... real......? *God how he wants her to be real... *Sam's rough voice almost makes Annie's eyes fill with tears. With his stubbled cheek under her palm, she can let herself believe it properly. He's really here. The nurse slides the needle into the crook of Sam's arm, taping it there and hanging the iv bag up above Sam's head with a coat hanger. A bit of a DIY solution, but this is hardly a fully functioning hospital. Determined to keep Sam's attention away from the needle and focused on her, Annie nods, a smile plastered across her face. "Still asking that old cracker, then? Good to know you haven't changed! Jesus, Sam... I thought--!! I was certain! How did you manage to-?" |

*Sam's eyes are moving slowly, searching Annie's face as she speaks, taking in the smile, the shining eyes. She looks just the same... a bit more haggard, maybe, but at her core, she's still bright, beautiful Annie. The sound of her voice is like music to Sam's ears, and despite everything - despite the pain, the confusion, the anger - a smile tugs at Sam's lips.* ... no idea. *Over his general discomfort, he's not even noticed the needle sliding home. He's more aware of the straps that are still tying him down - though that's mostly because he feels the urge to hug Annie. However, even with his arms free, he probably wouldn't have managed... Sam takes a breath, a particularly vicious throb of his head making him grimace. Then, swallowing dryly, he asks the question that's been burning in his mind* ... Gene... is, is he......? |

*once the needle's in, the nurse sets about undoing the straps holding Sam to the bed. He won't be allowed to get up, but now they've established the bite isn't progressing, there's no need to keep him tied down. Sam's discomfort settles like a bowling ball in Annie's stomach. Seeing Sam like this, she can only imagine what he and Gene have been through... And then the question she knew would come at some point. "He's alive, Sam - he's okay! Fighting a serious infection like a trooper, but... You know the Guv. Had enough energy to try and jump out of bed to find you, so he can't be all that bad, eh!" She pauses a moment before continuing. "God, when he asked after you I thought... I thought he'd gone into a delirium..." She shakes her head dismissing the thought. Sam's alive, god knows how. * |

*Sam takes it all in, every single word, his brain needed a few moments longer than normal to process what Annie is saying. Gene is okay... fighting like a trooper... ... asked after him... Sam blinks hard, trying to get through another wave of dizziness that's making the room swirl around him, trying to keep concentrating on Annie's face.* S-so... he'll make it. He'll get... get better, yeah...? *He needs that confirmation... Even now, anxiety is flooding him with every beat of his heart. The last time he'd seen Gene, he'd been hanging unconsciously between the other two soldiers... burning up...* |

*Annie can sense Sam's worry sharply - the two of them have always had a special bond, and now after what they've both been through together, travelling by themselves and then suddenly being apart... She can see why Sam is so anxious. "I'll make sure of it. We've got a doctor... She's been teaching a few of us, we've got limited equipment... We're in a better state than 99% of the world's hospitals now, even them posh private ones." She grins, stroking her thumb over Sam's cheek. "And it's not like I'd let either of you go now, would I. Only just got you back!"* |

*Oh, Annie. As the meaning of her words sinks in, Sam can feel a great deal of tension starting to slip away. They've made it... they actually made it to safety. Gene is going to be okay. With Annie looking after him, Sam doesn't even think to doubt that he'll make a full recovery, not when she sounds so certain of what she's saying. Sam exhales deeply, almost sighing. The thumb stroking across his cheek must be the most tender thing he's felt in... in forever. Without thinking, Sam raises his free hand and covers Annie's with it. Even though his arm feels incredibly heavy, and his fingers numb, he still makes the effort, squeezing her hand gently. Words fail him as his eyes begin to burn. In the background, Rob (who's been leaning against a wall, watching the exchange) turns his head away. He can see just how private this moment is... Besides, if Sam is about to start crying, he wants to give the man at least that bit of dignity. God knows he's had to go through enough.* |

*seeing the shimmer in Sam's eyes gives Annie the push she's needed. "Oh, Sam... " Desperate to help comfort him, she leans down and gives him the best hug she can from her position. Sam must feel so overwhelmed. The journey he's made... And god, she doesn't even know what he and Gene have gone through to get here. No clue who stabbed Gene, or how Sam recovered from his bite... She can't even imagine how hard it's been.* |

*When Annie leans down, Sam automatically moves his arm up to return the embrace. His grip isn't strong, but he doesn't care, holding onto Annie with everything he has left. She feels so warm and alive against him... He thinks he can even hear the beat of her heart, fast and strong. He takes a deep, shaky breath, squeezing his eyes shut (which causes a few droplets to roll down the sides of his face) for a moment, before murmuring hoarsely* ... I'm so glad you made it. |

*Annie gives a choked laugh, sensing Sam's tears even though she can't see them. "God, Sam... Same. I can't believe it.... With how things went so crazy back then, at the start... *Sam relaxes back onto the mattress as Annie pulls away, keeping his eyes on her - or trying to, because now with the tears it's become impossible to focus on anything. His hand slides down, lingering on Annie's arm for a moment, but then his strength leaves him, and it flops down onto the sheets as well. They all survived... so that means they didn't have any further losses in the group. The relief Sam feels is... unexpected. During the last few weeks, he had focused on nobody but Gene, and by the end, before the patrol picked them up, he couldn't have cared less whether or not Annie and the others were alive. But now? It leaves him dizzy, his head feeling light, even as a weak smile flashes across his face. The group is back together. They're in a safe place. The only thing that's left now is...* ... I want... to see him. Gene. I-I need to see him... *Sam turns his head, trying to see where Rob is, but the room pitches again. Sam can't make out anything other than Annie. He's not even realised yet that he isn't actually in a hospital room...* |

*Annie grimaces as Sam pales further - he must be feeling dizzy... And that isn't going to help him achieve his goal of seeing Gene... She looks up at Rob in Sam's place, knowing already what the answer will be. And indeed, Rob shrugs his shoulders apologetically, sympathy in his expression. "I'm afraid that won't be possible... You're safe from turning as far as we can tell, but..." He takes a regretful breath - if Sam had just told him the truth from the start then they could have avoided this. "... We need to calm everyone down before we can let you out of here. You caused a bit of a stir in the square. We need to explain. People here... We don't know all of them as well as we'd like. I don't know if there'll be any lurking vigilantes, if you catch my meaning." Quickly, he adds, "And you're hardly in a position to be moving about - you need to rest, get some fluids in you. This is the best place for you now."* |

*Sam blinks, needing a few seconds to really understand what Rob is saying. Right, so... so he can't go outside. That is something he can worry about later, but...* ... wh-where is he, then...? *Because if he'd need to go outside... Then Gene isn't in the same building... but why...? It's Annie who answers this time - she can't bear the thought of having to tell Sam that he isn't even in the medical tract of the village... "Don't worry, he's okay, just in a different building. The, uhm, the facilities here are a bit spread out, and with his leg it was better to put him somewhere with better equipment." She smiles apologetically. "I'm afraid there just... wasn't enough space there for the both of you. Resources are limited..." Sam, having focused on Annie again, relaxes a bit at that. Of course... that does make sense... to his foggy mind at least. So now he knows... Gene is safe. If he's in Annie's care, he'll be fine. He'll make it. With this final realization, Sam's eyelids start drooping. After the scare earlier, having to endure the examination, what little strength he had left is finally gone. There's just one last thing he needs to say, even as his vision begins to wobble and grey out...* ... tell him... tell him I love him... *Sam is way beyond the point of caring about pretending and not letting people know about their relationship. After what they've been through, it seems ridiculous. He just needs Gene to know - that he did all he could. That he's thinking of Gene. That he didn't abandon him...* |

*Annie blinks in surprise at Sam's request, but he's already asleep by the time she opens her mouth to respond. She'd had a feeling for a long time that she knew what'd been going on. The two of them, the way they fought but were always in sync, the crackling tension in the room whenever they squared off against each other... There was something there from the beginning. And this pretty much confirms it. Had she been as crude as Ray or Chris she'd have been confident enough to put a wager on it. And here it is. Proof. She chuckles to herself, shaking her head. Unbelievable. Rob on the other hand looks completely confused. He'll have to chalk it up to Sam being delirious. "I'll keep an eye on him. Make sure nobody interferes. When he's rehydrated and back with us we'll figure out what to tell the others. If you want to help with that, I'd appreciate it. People trust you. You tell them he's safe, a good percentage will believe you."* |

*Annie gets up slowly as Rob speaks, keeping her hand on Sam's arm for as long as possible. Even now that he's asleep, he doesn't look completely peaceful, but... that's to be expected, isn't it. No one can be completely at ease during their sleep these days. It's just not possible. Finally, with one last gentle squeeze, Annie lets go and turns to face Rob fully. She's grateful that he's seen reason and that he really seems to believe that Sam isn't dangerous... and that he's willing to go to such lengths to keep peace in the village. "I will, don't worry - I'll do everything I can." She hesitates for a moment, before adding, "I, uhm, I want him to be as comfortable as possible, if he'll have to stay here for the next few days... That won't be a problem, right?"* |

*Rob shakes his head reassuringly - he was never out to be cruel, just safe. And it seems as though Sam is relatively harmless - at least in the way of zombie bites anyway! And since he already knows people here, he should fit right in. "We'll treat him as though he was in the medical building. Get his fluids up, get some food in him... We'll make sure he's comfortable, don't worry. Someone'll bring some blankets along shortly." He gives Sam one more look over, taking a deep breath. The state he'd found Sam and his friend in, they wouldn't have lasted one more night out there. "We were damn lucky to find them. Few more hours and I don't know what would've happened."* |

*Annie is relieved to hear Rob say that - she wouldn't want Sam to have to suffer any more, not after everything else... And that way, he hopefully won't feel too much like he's been locked away... Then, what Rob says next gives Annie pause. He's... He's right. Gene was in a bad way - he's still feverish, and that leg of his looked hideous. Her and the head medic had a tough time getting the infected threads out and making sure they wouldn't have to just cut it all off... The thought makes her shudder and swallow hard. And Sam... She doesn't know how he survived the zombie fever, but she has to assume that that too took a toll on him. Taking all that and both their severe dehydration into account... Yeah. They were lucky. Real gratitude in her voice, Annie says "But you did find them... And I can't thank you enough for it. We... We didn't think we'd see either of them again... Least of all Sam. And now they're both here... And it's thanks to you."* |

*Rob can't help a slight blush from creeping across his cheeks at Annie's praise. He grins and looks down at the floor, scoffing as he does. "We were just out on patrol. *A smile breaks across Annie's face - she's not had the chance to see this softer side of Rob's often yet... He's one of the sergeants, taking his duties very seriously. But Annie has to admit that she likes it, that soft quality to his gaze. She nods, glancing back down at Sam for a moment. "It did. More than you could imagine." Annie pauses for a moment, before gathering herself. "Right - I better go, tell the Guv it's all good. He really was trying to get out of bed to see Sam... He'll be happy to know everything's sorted." One last time (for now, she has to remind herself - Sam isn't going anywhere now, after all), she reaches out to brush her fingers across Sam's messy fringe, eliciting nothing but a soft sigh. Then, she gathers up the bag she'd brought with her, turning back to Rob. "I'll leave him in your care, then. If... If you need anything, I'll be in Gene's room." Annie hesitates again - she feels a bit silly saying this, because she's only been here for a few weeks, whereas Rob has been doing this right from the start... But then again, she made the journey up here. She's been through enough to feel that she's still on eye level with a man like Rob. "Please let me know if there's trouble - if his condition changes or... Or anything."* Edited by Sam Tyler, May 19 2016, 08:17 PM.

*Rob nods with the hint of a soft smile on his face. Annie need not worry about deserving being here - she's a calming influence on the group, and anyone with medical training however basic is an important asset. She's more than proved her worth since she's been here. Rod's noticed that for sure. "Will do. But don't worry, he'll be just fine." And then, just to add, "Don't run yourself ragged looking after everyone, now. Make sure you take a break too." He's seen how determined Annie is - and if she could, she'd keep going all night. He needs to keep an eye out for her just as much as everyone else.* |

*Rob's last words give Annie pause, but only for a moment. Then she nods with a smile - she understands where Rob is coming from, and she knows that she would probably give herself the same advice. "I will. I'll see you later." With that, she's gone, the guard outside the cell letting her out. It takes her a few minutes to get back to the hospital quarter - she meets Ray and Phyllis on the way there, giving them a quick rundown of the recent events. Then, finally, she's knocking on Gene's door and opening it carefully, not wanting to wake him up in case he's asleep. "Guv?"* |

*Annie is somewhat relieved to see that Gene is alone in his room again - this way, she'll be able to talk completely freely... And she's even happier to see that he's awake. She closes the door behind herself and hurries over to Gene's side, lest he try and get out again. He's so eager to hear about Sam... They both care for each other so much. It makes Annie smile. "He's fine. I made sure of it." Knowing that Gene will want to know more, Annie continues, "Rob - he's one of the people in charge here - he's convinced that Sam won't be a threat to the community, so they'll make sure he's treated and recovers fully. He'll... He'll have to stay in the cells for now though - to keep him safe." Annie hesitates. "Do you remember anything at all? About how you came here?"* |

*To keep him safe... That doesn't sound good. This is the sanctuary that they were meant to be safe in - who's going to attack Sam in here? Why does he need to be kept safe?? The questions die on Gene's tongue. He doesn't have the energy, and the fact that Annie's keeping an eye on him - that's something. If she's looking out for Sam, he couldn't be in better hands. But Gene'll want to meet this 'Rob' for himself anyway. Check that he really did treat Sam right. After the incident with the cannibals it's hard to shake off the feeling that anyone unfamiliar is a serious threat. At Annie's question, he sighs, the tension flowing from his body. She doesn't know. She doesn't know what they had to endure. But then, Gene doesn't know how things went down with the rest of the group either. His mind is still foggy and his temple damp with fever, but even that isn't enough to wipe the last few weeks from his mind. Grimly amused, Gene huffs.* Like I could forget. |

*Annie hesitates again - she's not completely sure whether Gene understood what she was asking... But then, his fever is still high, so she can't blame him. A sympathetic smile on her face, she continues, "Well... I don't know all the details either, of course...it looks like Sam didn't tell Rob about the bite until they were inside the walls - until Chris saw him. Basically, most of the village knows about it now. It's... It's gonna take a while for everyone to calm down and to assure them that Sam's harmless. He's well guarded now, so no one should be able to go and... Well... Try and get rid of him." Surprised or not, he is worried though. They may be safe from the virus in these walls, but the place must he crawling with humans. And they know how dangerous people can be, especially when they're scared. Anxiousness bubbling away in his stomach, Gene looks up at Annie.* You... You really think they'd try? |

*Annie can see how much this new turn of events is affecting Gene... His eyes have widened, even as he's fighting with the fever. And she so wishes she could give him peace of mind, but... She looks down for a moment. "It's... Possible. I know some who wouldn't, but... It's a cruel world. People are scared. If there's the tiniest possibility that there could be a threat within these walls... " She trails off, her heart aching at the thought. Just like Rob, she's made friends with a lot of people, but not with everyone by far. And there are still some who are suspicious of everyone, who keep to themselves or their little groups. It's a difficult situation. Snapping herself out of it, Annie hurries to add, "But we won't let it come to that. Sam's well guarded, he'll be allowed to recover in peace, and we will do everything we can to convince people that he isn't infected. And if you feel up to it, I'm sure you'll be allowed to visit him." Annie tries to smile again, hoping that this will have put at least some of Gene's worries at rest.* |

*Gene takes little comfort in this, shaking his head determinedly. They've come this far together, and he's not going to just lie here and wait for someone he doesn't even know to deem it appropriate for him to 'visit' Sam. Gene may be sick and wounded, but he's not a prisoner. And neither is Sam.* Allowed? *He hasn't even met whoever's in charge... He knows nothing of his surroundings, of the people around him. He can't even remember being carried into this place. When Sam was at his side, the world made some kind of sense even when it was falling to bits. But now he's separated from him, unable to even get up to go and find him. Knowing full well how see-through his bravado is at this moment, Gene bristles up and grumbles.* There's no "allowed" about it. I wanna see Tyler, I'll see him. *Oh Gene... Annie understands where he's coming from. And in a way, it's so relieving to see that he's still himself - still the Guv. But looking at him now in this bed, his forehead sweaty from the fever, his face pale with exhaustion and pain... and she knows what his leg looks like... "Guv... it's not that simple." She sighs, just looking at him for a moment. She needs to make sure Gene understands... that it's not about whether or not someone gives him permission to see Sam... "You both need to recover first. When I saw Sam earlier... he was barely able to even look at me. And you -" Annie breaks off, grimacing slightly. She's not sure if it's okay to tell Gene this, especially when he's only just woken up after they brought him in... But if she doesn't, he'll keep insisting. "You're still... critical, you know? You're dehydrated, malnourished, and that leg of yours... I can't let them move you anywhere while you've still got wound fever. Moving you to the cells would make it so much harder for us to give you proper treatment." Before Gene can protest, she puts her hand on his, squeezing gently. "But I promise you - as soon as you feel better, I'll do all I can to make sure you get to see Sam, one way or another. We'll figure something out."* |

*Sam was barely able to look at Annie? That doesn't sound good at all. For him to be that exhausted he really must have been through a lot while Gene was unconscious. Regretfully, Gene realises that Sam maybe needs the alone time in order to recover.... But it still doesn't make him feel any better about being separated from him. Annie says he's fine, but where's the proof? Gene hasn't seen for himself. And then there's the issue of his own condition. Critical, Annie said... So he isn't out of the woods yet? Honestly that doesn't surprise him, with how rotten he feels. But still, they've made it here now... And if he were to snuff it a few hours after arriving, that'd just be too cruel. So he sighs, frustrated, and stares blearily at the ceiling.* 'That leg of mine' still tryin' to kill me, then? |

*Annie belatedly realises how that must have sounded to Gene, and curses inwardly. The events of the last few hours have shaken more than she thought... "No, that's... that's not what I meant. You'll be ok, if you give yourself time to rest. You've been...." She trails off, gives a little laugh. "Well, you know what you've been through. I can only guess. But I know that you've been aggravating that wound for at least a week, which didn't do you any good. Your leg will need a lot of rest to properly recover from this." A small pause, then Annie gives a little smile. "And I'll make sure you'll get that rest. And I'll make sure Sam will get enough rest as well. I'll sit with him, I'll deliver messages between the two of you, whatever you want. And I'll make sure you two get to see each other again as soon as possible." Again she pauses, then Annie adds quietly, but still smiling, "He wants you to know that he loves you."* |

*Gene's about to grumble further about the state of his leg and being apart from Sam, but then Annie's words make him freeze. Sam said.... What? Even though things have changed so much - people have so many other things to worry about now than who's snagging who - the thought of Annie knowing causes that switch to flick in Gene's gut. He doesn't think that switch will ever go away. That gut reaction of 'fight or flee, deny and don't confirm'. Ray's reaction just weeks before was confirmation of Gene's hidden fears - that even in this new, complicated and dangerous world, people will still abandon him for who he loves. Very carefully controlling his expression (as much as he can summon the energy to), Gene fixes his startled gaze on Annie. She doesn't seem to be looking at him any different... And she isn't Ray... So maybe.... Gene tries to huff in amusement.* Must be about as muddled as me, then... |

*Oh... Annie can see what's going on. Gene thinks that she might not be taking Sam seriously... and that she might judge Gene - them both - if he confirmed what Sam said. And, well... it's understandable. There is no telling how people might react, even with the current state of their world. She can see how much that thought scares Gene, even though he's trying to hide it. Even after everything that happened - after they all had to witness his and Sam's mutual breakdown, back in that basement - Gene is still so cautious. Annie sighs, shaking her head a little. "It's okay - you don't have to pretend. It's been a bit obvious, you know?" She huffs out a laugh. "... well, maybe not to everyone. Men can be slow on the uptake." Looking Gene in the eye, Annie tries to communicate as much as she can with that look as well as her words, her hand still covering Gene's, still squeezing gently. "You two are my best friends, and nothing's gonna change that. Okay?"* |

*Gene stares back into Annie's eyes, his heart beating hard and his skin feeling clammy. Though whether that's panic or fever, he can't tell. But one thing he does know is that this is how a rabbit in the headlights must feel. But Annie's squeezing his hand... Saying she knows and that it's okay... That they've been obvious... So Ray didn't tell after all. And he supposes that after what happened in that basement, he shouldn't be surprised Annie noticed. Even if it still feels wrong for people to know, Annie is probably the one person he can trust to be okay with it. Slowly, his tension eases a little. Okay. They can deal with this. Gene nods and then pauses, considering his next words carefully.* You know that's not true for everyone, even now... *then, remembering what Ray said, all those weeks ago - that there were rumours it was people like him that started all of this-* .... Maybe even especially now... *wincing at the thought, Gene makes sure he's got Annie's attention and continues.* If anyone else finds out, we could be back outside those gates or swinging from a tree.... |

*Annie had so hoped to be able put Gene at ease, but it seems that she succeeded only partially. At least he isn't scared of her reaction anymore, but... damn. She has to admit that Gene's got a point... She as well had heard those rumours, though she remembers it only now. So in light of that, she entirely understands what Gene is asking. And eager to give him peace of mind, she nods, speaking with conviction. "My lips are sealed."* |

*With that reassurance, Gene closes his eyes and lets out a slow, relieved breath. Cartwright is trustworthy. He can trust her. He needs to try and let this panic go. And still, even though Annie knows, Gene can't bring himself to verbally confirm it. Even that feels like a danger somehow.* When you see 'im... You can tell him, uh - - Tell him the same? And make sure he stays quiet about it, too. Tyler isn't as stealthy about it as he should be. *And neither of them need another reason to worry. Any more stress and Gene thinks his nerves are just going to give up altogether. What with Sam, their separation, this new issue and Gene's own sickness, he can't handle anything else. But at least focusing on Sam once more is keeping his adrenaline up and maintaining his concentration. Keeping him from dwelling on the pain he's in and the fever raging through his system.* |

*A soft smile shows on Annie's lips. "Will do." She briefly thinks back to the fact that Rob probably heard what Sam said as well... but Sam had been on the bring of passing out again. Without knowing either him or Gene, Rob couldn't have any idea what he was talking about... he won't suspect a thing. And even if... Rob is smarter than to believe that the whole zombie apocalypse started because of who went to bed with whom. Her eyes on Gene's face as he seems to be relaxing more, Annie's eyes are, not for the first time, drawn to the scar on his cheek. That looks nasty... but it's nowhere near as problematic as the wound in Gene's leg, luckily. In different times, Gene would have been able to tout it as a war trophy. Now, Annie isn't sure whether he'll even want to talk about it... And as curious as she is, she won't push (the other detectives will be doing a fine job of that, she's sure). So, the smile still there, Annie lets go of Gene's hand and places hers to his unhurt cheek instead. If he doesn't like it, she'll claim it was to get a bit of an estimate of his temperature. In truth, she wants to help him relax further. "You should get some shut-eye. You've got a lot of healing to do."* |

*Gene sluggishly opens his eyes again as Annie's palm cups his cheek. She's right - he should sleep... But then she'll leave. And without Sam there, he's going to be alone in this strange place, vulnerable. Sam's been by his side constantly ever since the others left. He's not used to the quiet that comes without him now. But he's so tired... His eyes droop once more without his permission, and Gene grunts in reply.* Y'gonna go check on Dorothy then? Pass on the -- the thing? |

*Annie keeps her gaze on Gene, observes how his eyes are threatening to droop, but he still tries to keep them up and open... like he's reluctant to sleep... She nods. "I will." Then, out of an impulse, she adds, "But... I can stay with you a bit longer, if you'd like." And just to make sure Gene doesn't brush her off in order to protect his "manliness", she continues, "You're due for a check-up soon enough anyway... so it's no trouble. And Sam is safe, with Rob watching over him." Hopefully, that'll be enough to assure Gene of both their safety... Annie won't let him fret over unnecessary things. Not after all he's been through.* |

*Slightly embarrassed but too in need of the company, Gene closes his eyes and nods wordlessly. He knows that Annie's probably anxious to get back to Sam, but what with his partner gone, Gene can't get used to the feeling of being alone. So as the time passes, he swallows against the dryness in his throat, twitches as the sweat continues to dampen his forehead and the pangs shoot up and down his leg and starts to drift into a doze. There's still so much he doesn't know about this place, and he doesn't like that. Being in control is what's natural for him, and at the moment he doesn't have control over neither his body nor surroundings. But as soon as he's able to think properly he's got a lot of questions to ask.* |

*Even though she asked, the fact that Gene actually nods takes Annie by surprise. But of course - she'll stay. She trusts Rob. And though she wants to see Sam again - just to make sure she wasn't dreaming and he's really there - she'll stay. Sam would want that. And so, the hours pass. The head medic checks in, changes Gene's bandages, makes sure the fever hasn't gone up. Annie stays even after that. It's only at the end if the night that Rob enters the room. He'd suspected that Annie had stayed up to look after a friends. After a quiet conversation, she leaves, having promised to get some shut-eye. Once she's gone, Rob is alone in the room with Gene. He's left Sam to one of the other Mancunian coppers - Phyllis. If Sam's gonna be safe with anyone, it's gonna be her. After hesitating a moment, Rob sits down in the chair Annie vacated, moving it so that he's sitting at a slight distance to Gene's bed, but still in his line of view. He has a lot of questions... And it doesn't look like Sam will be waking up any time soon, although he has been moving in his sleep, murmuring, twitching. Sometimes groaning. No, Rob wants to hear the other side of the story now. He won't force Gene if he isn't feeling up to it, but he'll have to try, once the man is somewhat awake.* |

*Gene sleeps lightly, twitching ever so often as his leg stings or aches - but there's a peace to his sleep. One that comes from knowing he's not alone. Annie's presence has an effect, even if he's unconscious. By the time Rob's replaced her, Gene's already beginning to slowly wake up. Rob is still completely unknown to Gene, and that unknown presence in the room puts him at enough unease to finally bring him out of his sleep and back to reality. Sleepily, Gene blinks open his eyes. It takes a second for him to realise that there's someone else there, and as soon as his eyes catch the figure in Annie's seat, Gene's tensing up. If he could push himself up the bed and get ready to fight, he would. But helpless as he is, all Gene can do is fix his gaze on the man and croak.* Where... Where's Cartwright...? |

*Rob catches the moment at which Gene realises he isn't alone. Or rather, that it isn't Annie with him anymore. Either way, Rob knows that Annie wouldn't forgive him if he let this man go into a panic, so he raises his hands placatingly. "She's ok - I sent her to bed. She was up all night, staying with you." And aware of the fact that Gene doesn't even know him yet, Rob continues, "I'm Robert - I was leading the patrol that found you two yesterday." There, he hesitates - he doesn't want Gene to feel threatened, or like he needs to question Ron's motives, so he needs to try and put him at ease as much as possible... And he's aware of the fact that Gene was unconscious when he was brought into the village. "You're safe here. This is a village built for the military. Our walls are well guarded and impenetrable for the walkers. And so long as you don't cause any trouble, you can stay for as long as you want."* |

*So this man does indeed hold some power. Probably best not to upset him too much, then. Gene'll have to try and control himself - the fact that he still doesn't know much about this place and doesn't even remember arriving here is putting him on edge. The amount of authority he usually holds is gone now, and he's at these people's mercy. He can't help feeling slightly on the defensive. *It's easy to see how uncomfortable Gene is with this situation... maybe Rob should have waited until Annie was back in the room... but no. A whole day has passed, and if the man is in any condition to talk, then Rob has to make this conversation happen as soon as possible. There are too many questions to ask, and too many things to ensure. These two arrived with too much of a bombshell effect to leave them alone until they're recovered. So Rob remains serious as he answers, "As far as I'm aware, you'll be fine, so long as you give that fever time to subside." His expression does soften a little at this point. *Oh good, that makes things easier. Rob leans forward in his chair, resting his elbows on his knees. "Tell me about your friend's bite. And the fever." Anticipating that Gene might protest, or become concerned by the motives behind his request, Rob adds, "We need to understand as much as possible about what happened to him. If he's somehow developed antibodies to the virus..." He exhales, and finally part of his anxiety over that topic is showing. "... it could change everything. We have facilities here that could, given some time, develop a vaccine." Usually, Rob wouldn't be leading an interrogation like this, giving away the reason why he's asking these questions. *At first, Gene's about to tell Rob he can stuff it. The thought of this man knowing everything about Sam's bite... It feels as though he might be trying to find out if Sam's still a risk. But then, the reason. In case of a cure. Of course, Sam's immunity leading to a cure has crossed Gene's mind before - but it's what they'll have to do to get it that worries Gene. Though so far Rob seems sincere - and Annie seems to trust him... So Gene takes a deep, uncomfortable breath and starts.* He got bit. M'sure you've seen it. We were trapped in a basement by a hoarde. The fever set in and I sent the rest of the team - Annie, Chris, Ray... I sent 'em off through the air vent to escape. Stabbed me so I couldn't run, took Sam out the back to be slaughtered. *He remembers it clearly - the hopelessness - knowing he'd never see Sam again. Rob leans back, exhaling slowly. "Any later than that, and..." He doesn't finish the sentence - Gene doesn't need to hear that. He needs to concentrate on recovering. "... well, in any case - I suppose congratulations are in order. So far, no one from further down south than Manchester's made it up here... and I've not heard a story like yours before."* |

*Any later than that and.... Gene knows what Rob's about to say. He's thought it himself often enough after waking. He remembers nothing between collapsing in the woods and waking up in this very bed. It's disconcerting, and he's well aware that he may never have woken up at all.* We've set the bar, then. Sam's be pleased. *and, because it's still playing on his mind,* You think Tyler might really be the cure, then? |

*Rob lowers his gaze, thinking it over for a moment. Then he nods slowly. "... yeah. I've talked to our chief surgeon about it - she believes that it might be possible to extract an antidote from his blood. Maybe even a serum to vaccinate people with, to prevent further infections." She also said that doing something like that would require a large number of tests, and that they would need Sam to be back to good health for that, because the procedure might turn out to be quite... taxing. And it would take a long time to develop - their facilities aren't as advanced as they need to be to do something like that quickly. So Rob is hesitant to talk about it any further - upsetting a recovering patient isn't exactly his most favourite pastime. "But that's further down the road. For now, the both of you should just concentrate on recovering."* |

*So it really might be possible... God, imagine that. Sam's such a damn oddball that it might just be more than wishful thinking. If there's anyone special enough to be the key to all of this, it's Tyler. But the gravity of this doesn't escape Gene. If it's true and Sam could provide a vaccine, then Sam himself becomes secondary to the main objective. And that worries Gene. Fixing Rob with a serious look, Gene interrupts.* Listen. However 'far down the road' a vaccine is, nobody touches Sam without my say-so. Okay? Finding a cure is bloody important, I get that. But anyone does anything to hurt 'im in the process, and--! |

*Rob looks right back at Gene, searching his expression, noting the fierce protectiveness that has so suddenly flared up. This is what he was afraid of... A bit belatedly, he raises his hands in a calming gesture. "As I said, before we mention any of this to Sam, we'll wait for his full recovery. And for what it's worth, I'll make sure he's treated properly, and that he has full say in what does or doesn't happen. We're not..." Rob pauses, reconsidering his words. "It's a cruel world... But we try not to add any more cruelty to it." Then, suddenly, there's a bit of a self-conscious smile. "Besides, Annie wouldn't have it either. Or any of your other mates."* |

*Gene nods once, keeping his eyes on Rob. This man seems trustworthy - but Gene has yet to meet anyone else here. He hasn't met this surgeon or any of the lab people who'll be dealing with Sam, taking blood, deciding what tests to do... So while Gene's gut tells him to trust Rob, he still can't feel quite at ease.* That's right. There's not many of us, but we look after each other. You hurt one of us, you hurt all of us. That's how it goes. |

*Rob nods - that makes sense. It's a tight little group of detectives that's made its way up here... In a way, it's a little worrying. Gene seems like a natural leader... If he decides to challenge how things are done here, there could be trouble... So, turning serious again, Rob says "Nobody will be hurt - so long as you respect the rules that are in place. Don't go challenging them while you're still bed-bound."* |

*Gene raises an eyebrow. He knows he's being annoying, but he's going to flip this round. He has to be sure.* Dont hurt any of us and we won't challenge the rules. But don't worry. They're good people we've brought here. You're lucky to have 'em. |

*Rob remains silent for a few seconds, simply looking at Gene. He was right... this man is fiercely protective of his team, and from the looks of it even more so of Sam. It's a good thing he already knows the rest of the group, because if he didn't, he probably would be skeptical about letting them all stay here... But it's too late for that now. And besides, he meant what he said - they're not cruel. They won't throw these two out... especially not if Sam really is the cure to this mess. As to what will happen with the tests... they'll have to cross that bridge once they arrive at it. So Rob nods again. "So far, that seems to be the case." He pauses, then takes a breath. "And I assure you, again, we won't do anything against your friend's will." Then, eager to turn the conversation to a different subject (he'll have to talk to his colleagues about all of this...), Rob says, "Do you have any questions at all? Anything you want to know?"* Edited by Sam Tyler, Jun 6 2016, 07:50 PM.

*Okay. Nothing against Sam's will. That's good. Gene will still make sure he's involved in the whole process, though - he doesn't trust Sam not to 'sacrifice himself for the cause', so to speak. Grateful for the chance to finally learn more about this place, Gene takes a deep breath and starts. Time for him to get a grip on this place.* Okay. My turn, then. How the hell does this place even still exist? |

*Rob is relieved that Gene lets it go, and the first question he asks almost makes him smile. It's the same question everyone asks upon their arrival. "We were lucky. It's a village built for soldiers and their families, and when the virus broke out, some of us had the presence of mind to move people up here. We'd heard reports from down south, so we made sure to stock up and fortify what we could... and it worked. There's an independent power generator, so we've got water and electricity. Plus, we've established a fairly steady connection to some Scottish bases, they're holding up fairly well. We exchange supplies every month or so. We should be able to survive for... at least a year." That is, if nobody from the inside decides to sabotage things...* |

*A year! Jesus, that sounds impossible. Too good to be true. But here Rob is, telling him they could survive for that long - and even that they're in contact with other bases! He didn't even know there were any.* Sounds like you've been busy little beavers, then. How're you managing with food? You all grazing like cows on the open plain or something? |

*Rob huffs, somewhat amused by Gene's choice of words. "This base was built with a nuclear emergency in mind. Stock's been kept up well before any of this began. And we do have some livestock, and an agricultural area. It's not exactly luxurious, but it's enough to keep us all alive and going. Needless to say though, everyone's got to do their bit to ensure everything runs smoothly." And then there's the factor of morale... That's the tricky thing. There are so many different people from different backgrounds here... Some of them traumatised beyond hope. They have a duty to protect everyone who comes seeking help, and knowing that they've done a huge part in preserving humankind already makes Rob proud... But sometimes, he can't help but feel relief over the fact that these days, it's becoming rarer and rarer for survivors such as Gene and Sam to turn up anywhere close their base.* |
