*Four months have gone by since the first case broke out. Four months since their lives all turned upside down. London fell first, then Manchester afterwards. Gene'll forever be proud of that. All those posh hoity-toity Southerners, coming up 'ere, bringing their diseases! But it's nothing to laugh about, not really. The virus spreads fast, claiming every city, town and village in the country. Nowhere is safe, or so the radio says. Stay in your houses, lock the doors, don't go out for any reason. But of course that instantly sent everyone into a panic, and now the roads are clogged with abandoned and burnt out vehicles, unpassable even with Gene's extensive knowledge of the city's backstreets. They were all in the station when it went down - reports of crazed citizens biting and savaging other members of the public. News reports from London had prepared them all for what was to come, but seeing it in the flesh was another thing altogether. Mrs Peterson from the local offie, knawing on Mr Sajib's leg like a chicken drumstick, blood everywhere... They knew they'd have to put her down, but shooting at a familiar face, eyes white and mouth red, hissing and gargling coming from her throat? Nobody could have been ready for that. They did what they could with the resources the had until finally the city collapsed and chaos took over. Looting and fires, death and destruction were everywhere. People fleeing to the country, people arriving fleeing from the country, people barricading themselves indoors, camping out on rooftops... It was like something from a film. With half of the force already bitten and turned, the remaining police had no choice but to lock themselves in the station and sit it out for a while. And though he hated sitting about and waiting, Gene had to admit that the station was the best place for them to be. There were secure areas like the cells, a canteen with a mostly full larder. Enough storeys for them to watch the city and stairs for when the power finally was cut to the lift. The power switching off was part of what finally did it. The fridge and freezer warmed, ruining half of the already dwindling food supplies. Everybody had known that the station couldn't be a permanent fortress from the horrors outside, and it was now time to venture out. The running water went with the electricity, and people were needing to go out on food and water collections. That lasted a couple more weeks until finally the lack of supplies began to turn people on each other. Then they hear the battery operated radio crackle. Salvation, a fortified camp up north. Only a few hours drive on a clear motorway, but with no vehicle it'd take weeks to walk it. More, considering the slow and cautious pace they'd have to take. But with supplies running low and morale at breaking point, it was a risk they'd have to take. Appointing himself leader (as if anyone would have objected) and Sam as second on command, Gene posed an ultimatum. Anyone who wanted to fight for a chance to survive could join him. Anyone who wanted to waste away in this godforsaken building could starve to death on their own. What was left of CID and a few other officers accepted, filling their police rucksacks with as much bottled water and canned food as they could reasonably take from the others, guns - lots of guns, and set off, bound for the various shops they needed things from. Pop up tents, knives, more weapons, toothpaste, matches... Anything of use. A few fell during the mission, but mostly the run was a success, lasting a few days with them using a shop as a Base. And now, Gene walks next to Sam as they navigate their way through yet another car-obstructed road. They're out of Manchester now, but the shelter is still weeks away. Progress has been slow. Humans have turned out to be just as dangerous as the bloody zombies so far - ambushing anyone they could for supplies. Vince was bitten on the leg not far out of the city. It took 12 hours for the fever to finally finish him off, and then another whole five minutes for Gene to pull himself together enough to strike the final blow. He won't have one of his own walking around like one of those monsters. With their slowly diminishing group in tow, they keep walking. Night'll be setting in soon... Two hours or so and it'll be dark. Gene turns to Sam, chin peppered with stubble and dirt smudged on his face, voice rough with the effort of keeping his legs moving* S'gonna get dark soon... Should try to find somewhere to sleep. *looks past his partner at the dark abandoned houses on one side of the street, focusing on the one at the end - more windows for escape routes that way. * Think Mr and Mrs Undead'll mind if we squat for the night? |

*Gene grunts in agreement. Sam's right, Gene didn't leave Sam either, when the time came. He couldn't. They've already lost so much, losing their other half would be the last straw. And as has been proven, they'll both do anything to avoid that. Gene huffs a tiny laugh.* S'pose we're both as stupid as each other then, eh. |

*Sam can't help it, a soft shakey laugh escapes him as well.* Yeah. Made for each other. *And he cranes his neck a little to press another kiss to Gene's cheek, and then another. Then he whispers* Try to rest.... You need it. I'll stay. *Watching over him. Always watching over him.* |

*Gene tilts his face towards Sam as he feels the kiss on his cheek, forcing the pain out of his mind and just focusing on the wisps of Sam's breath so close to his skin. Sam's right - he needs to sleep. He needs to give his body time to start healing, and he needs to conserve the energy it'll take to replenish the blood he's lost over the course of the day. So he nods, closing his eyes and trying hard to calm down enough to begin drifting off. The wound in his leg is still throbbing, but if Gene can just concentrate on something else - something that he can use to trick his mind into a warm, happier state... Feeling like a sick child, Gene whispers back to Sam.* Need something to distract me.... Talk to me? Somethin' less bloody miserable than this. Something from Before? |

*Sam's just about ready to settle into the silence - well, not quite silence, not with the sounds from outside - but Gene's whisper focuses his attention again. And... Of course. Of course Gene would need that. He did the same for Sam. He should have thought of that earlier, really. However... It's hard for Sam to think back to Before. It seems so distant, like it was just a pleasant, but ultimately short dream. So Sam sighs silently, stroking his hand across Gene's chest and back up.* Okay. Let me think... *A scratch at the door makes Sam hesitate, causes his muscles to tense immediately, but then as things start to calm down again, Sam allows his mind to wander a little. And, to his surprise, he does remember things. They're coming back to him, one by one. Softly, San starts to talk about home. What they would get up to on a Sunday, a day off work, staying in on a rainy day and being perfectly content doing that. Doing nothing. Lounging. Sam remembers and speaks off that time they decided to assemble a new wardrobe, and how that took up most of the afternoon. And be continues, his voice quiet and gentle, his hands stroking from time to time, making sure to keep Gene warm and protected. To give him an illusion of safety.* |

*Gene falls silent as Sam begins to speak. The memories wash over him like a warm blanket, a barrier protecting him from the physical pain and despair of the current time. Soon Gene's lost in the fantasy, remembering the two of them lounging in the garden on a hot day - the barbecue that Gene absolutely rocked. That damn wardrobe, the way he started to throw bits of it in Sam's direction until he admitted that buying flat-packed was a bad idea. Cuddling up to watch a film as the rain poured down outside... Sleep takes him surprisingly quickly, the exhaustion winning in the end, dragging Gene down into a place where he'll stay until his body starts to repair. And that's how it is, for several hours. Gene doesn't even twitch, the only sign that he's still alive the rise and fall of his chest. It's a long time before Gene properly begins to wake up - must be six hours by the time he finally feels the ground beneath him and remembers where he is. Though he doesn't remember it being this hot... He doesn't even have a shirt on, does he? A sudden stabbing sensation in his leg reminds him abruptly what'd happened and why he's laid out like this. He jerks with a choked sound, the pain trying to fold him in half. Shit...! What's happening to him?! * S-Sam? You still here? |

*Sam senses exactly when Gene falls asleep - his breathing becoming that little bit deeper and more even, his muscles relaxing. Still, Sam keeps talking a little while longer, to make sure his voice fills Gene's dreams as well. There is a protectiveness in his heart that feels almost overwhelming, and he needs an outlet for that... Needs to make sure to give Gene as much comfort as he possibly can. During the following hours, Sam doesn't move from Gene's side. The floor is cold and rocky, and with just his shirt on Sam can feel the coldness seeping into his body steadily, but he doesn't care. Gene needs the warmth and proximity, and between them they share some body warmth as well. Sam dozes off a few times, but every little noise from outside jerks him awake again, makes him reach for the iron pipe, just to make sure it's still there. And so the hours pass. And as they do, Sam grows steadily more tired, more drowsy.... He shouldn't sleep, he needs to look after Gene... Then can't be ambushed, not again.... But the sound of Gene's breathing, the steady rhythm of his chest rising and falling...... It's enough to finally lull Sam into a light sleep. However, that doesn't last long. When Gene jerks awake, the motions interrupt Sam's sleep quite abruptly as well, and he's tense immediately, sitting up suddenly and reaching for his weapon... When he realises what happened. Gene's awake. And his voice... Shit. He sounds scared and pained. The wound must be making itself known... Sam shifts and places his hand on Gene's cheek again, about to try and calm him down, when he notices it. The heat, unnatural, radiating off Gene's skin. Sam stops, his stomach dropping. This... This is a fever. A wound fever. Shit. Realising that he hasn't said anything yet, Sam presses his hand properly against Gene's cheek, clearing his throat before murmuring.* S'alright, I'm 'ere, Gene, I'm 'ere. You're alright. *Except he isn't, and Sam could slap himself for saying it. But he needs to calm Gene down somehow... If Gene panics, things might get even worse... * |

*Gene groans, relaxing as he feels Sam's hand on his cheek. Good, good, he's still here... He's still there. Gene swallows uncomfortably, reaching his hand up to cover Sam's hand with his. The skin he feels there is cooler than usual... or is that just this hot flush he's having? And why is his leg suddenly so painful again? Shouldn't it have settled down overnight...? With a grunt, he raises his head a little to try and look down at the limb, but in the pitch black all he can see are the little white spots flashing in front of his eyes. Weakly, he lets his head flop back down onto the jacket-come-pillow. Has he missed something? What's going on? Confused, Gene utters his question in a vague manner - he doesn't even really feel sure himself of what he's asking.* What... What happened...? |

*Sam blinks - is Gene having some sort of short-term amnesia...? The thought squeezes his insides together even more painfully. He can't deal with this...! No, wait, there's no use in thinking that. He has to deal with it. Keeping his hand where it is, Sam does his best to keep his voice level.* You... You were stabbed, a few hours ago. *Sam moves his hand up to Gene's forehead, feeling his temperature there, just to make sure...* ... And it looks like you've developed a fever now. *Sam knows his voice started to crack there at the end, but that can't be helped now. Reaching behind him, Sam feels about until he finds the torch, switching it on and shining the light in Gene's leg. Shit... The bandages are stained red. He'll need to change them... But he's scared of the sight that will greet him underneath... First things first though. Putting down the torch and making sure it isn't pointing directly at Gene's face, Sam once again slides his arm underneath his partner's shoulder and carefully hoists him up.* 'Ere... *He picks up the water bottle and holds it up to Gene's lips. Now more than ever it's important that he gets enough water... And after he's had that, Sam will have to think of his next step...* |

*stabbed... That's right... He remembers. In that shack that stank of burning flesh, the serrated knife... He suppresses a shudder, blinking as the torch flicks on and moves down his body to the source of the burning. Sam make so comment. That's... That can't be good, can it? But before he can ask, Gene's being hoisted up and the rim of a water bottle pressed against his lips. Usually Gene'd try and protest, remind Sam of how limited their supplies are. But this time he's too tired and warm. The cooler liquid's too tempting, and he takes a couple of large gulps, breaking off with a gasp and wiping his forearm against his mouth. The cut across his cheek tugs uncomfortably, but the plaster stays in place. Another memory... Great.* You sure it's a fever? I mean... We're underground... Heat gets trapped down 'ere... *deep down in his gut, Gene knows this isn't good. In fact it's downright terrifying. But denial is the first thing he has to try. Maybe he's fine, maybe it's just the temperature down here... * |

*Sam is both relieved and apprehensive over the fact that Gene is drinking this readily - if he didn't even protest, it means he needed it really badly... Sam puts the bottle down as Gene pulls away, taking in the expression on his partner's face. Even in the dim light, he can see a sheen of sweat on his skin... The way his eyes seem heavy... At least there's hardly any blood on the plaster across his cheek, that's something... But... His throat tight, Sam shakes his head.* It's cold, Gene. And you... You're burnin' up. *Sam bites his lip, needing to gather himself. Gene having a fever changes things drastically... He'd planned to wait for as long as possible to go outside, but with the situation like this... Getting that fever down is a priority, even if it means... Sam takes a breath. This is a decision he'll have to make, whether he likes it or not.* Gene... I'll 'ave to go up. See if I can find anythin'. The bloke who........... *Sam can't say it, he can't. Just thinking about it sends a violent shiver down his spine*... I'm sure 'e was a doctor. Might've left a stash of medication somewhere in that shack. *And if he did.... It might save Gene's life.* |

*It takes a moment for the meaning of Sam's words to properly process, but as soon as they do Gene's grabbing Sam's wrist tightly to stop him from moving. He can't go out there...! They have no idea how many of those things are still outside the door, let alone up on the surface. They're in a very dangerous place - what if the cannibals came back to reclaim the building? Going up there alone could very likely mean suicide! He tenses up, his leg shooting another burning flash of pain up his spine, causing his grip on Sam to strengthen. Voice choked and laced with pain, Gene grits out,* I'm fine! You're not g-going up there! Not without backup, you'll be k-killed...! |

*Sam isn't prepared for the strength of Gene's grip nor for a strong reaction like that, come to think of it - and so he sucks in a breath, his eyes widening with surprise. Gene... He doesn't want him to go up there. That's understandable, but...!* Christ, just... Listen to you...! *The pain is well audible in Gene's voice, and it breaks Sam's heart... He doesn't want to leave him down here, not when there is no guarantee that he'll make it back, but staying here and watching his partner die slowly and painfully? No, he can do that even less.* It's been quiet out there for the last few hours. I'll be fine... I will. *Sam swallows - it's so hard to put this into words...!* You... You won't, though, if we can't find anythin' against that fever. *Sam tugs his hand away a little, trying to get Gene to let go.* C'mon Gene, please... |

*Gene knows he's slurring a little - stammering, even. But he can't let Sam go. He holds on as tight as he can, shaking his head in response, breathing coming fast with the effort.* You can't... You can't d-die for me. *He shakes his head again, determined. He'll get better. He just needs more rest, maybe his stab wound redressing... And if he really is going to die, he can't drag Sam down with him!* |

*Sam's throat tightens unbearably at Gene's stammered words.* I won't. *he has to swallow against the lump in his throat, holding Gene as close as he can.* I promise, I won't. I'll come back. *Sam tries to smile, but he's not sure whether he succeeds.* Can't keep me away from you. *Contrary to before, Sam doesn't try to pull his wrist from Gene's grasp; this time, he lowers both their hands, until they come to rest against Gene's chest.* C'mon... Let go, Gene. Please. I swear, I'll be back, and I'll look after you, and you'll be okay. We both will. |

*Gene wants to do as Sam says - wants to trust that Sam can make it back safe, but something in him just can't do that. They've had so many near misses that Gene can't find it in him to be optimistic this time. He's weak and hurting and sick, and the last thing he wants is for his partner to walk out of that door and not come back. But he can feel the sweat on his forehead, the flushing hot and cold in his system. His leg feels too warm, like the whole of it's been bruised, and that's not counting the pain from the wound itself. If he doesn't get some kind of antibiotic he can't see it getting any better.... If he doesn't let Sam go, he could-- --he really could die. Slowly, he relaxes his grip on Sam's wrist, not letting go but giving Sam just enough room to pull away if he wants to. There's nothing he can do to stop Sam really, is there. He's too feeble at the moment to forcefully hold Sam back, and the more he begs the more he'll look like he needs the help. He takes a deep slow breath, whispering in a throaty voice.* You're all I've got left in this world, Sam. Even lost my bloody coat! *winces, managing to hold back a small chuckle.* I... I already lost you once this month. If that happens again it'll... *shakes his head, lost for both hope and words*.... I can't. You've already used up your nine lives. If... If it's gotta be you or me, it better d-damn well be me. |

*Listening to Gene's words makes tears well up in Sam's eyes - it's nothing new, but hearing Gene actually say it... It's hard to cope with. He sounds like a shadow of himself, his armor and composure completely broken down, revealing a small, tired and scared core. His last words make Sam choke.* Don't say that. God...! *Sam bows his head, shaking it slightly and trying to find words. He slides his wrist free of Gene's hand, but only to take it in his own a moment later, holding on tight.* You... When I was bitten, you 'ad no choice... There was nothing you could do, nothing but watch. But I... I can do something, Gene, I can help. I could save you. *breaks off for a moment, trying to gather himself* You'd do the same in my place. *takes a breath, looking up at the ceiling* I don't want to leave you. But if there's a chance that I could find what we need... You know I 'ave to take it. *Finally looks down at Gene again, his face a grimace of anguish for a moment before he swallows and looks away* I can't just sit here and... And watch you as you... *No, he can't say it. "Watch you as you die, slowly."* |

*Gene listens to Sam's voice - the distress there, the determination when he says he can help. And he knows in that instant that he has to let Sam go. After all, as Sam said - he'd do the same in a heartbeat. Gene grits his teeth as Sam trails off, knowing exactly what he was about to say. Sam doesn't want to sit there and watch him die. Just the thought of that hits Gene in the stomach like a brick. And so, heart gripped by fear and body tense with pain and fever, Gene nods once.* Just... Just promise you'll s-stay alive. And keep out of danger. No wild antics, okay? I let you go on that c-condition.... |

*Sam grips Gene's hand that little bit tighter, nodding without hesitation, the fact that he won't leave Gene completely against his will taking some weight off his chest.* I promise. I'm coming back. *Under these circumstances, Sam wouldn't risk even the slightest delay... No, he'll make his way up, find what they need, and come straight back down. Easy peasy. .... Easy. Swallowing hard, Sam leans down and kisses Gene. He needs to make sure Gene knows he'll come back... That he'll do everything he can. So Sam pulls back just a little, looking down at Gene's fevered face, and he sets his jaw before saying, with as much conviction as he can* It'll be alright. You'll be alright. |

*resigned to his decision, Gene nods. If this is what's got to happen, there's no getting around it. He's burning up and his leg feels as though it's on fire. His muscles feel weak and his mouth feels dry... If Sam can stop the fever and the infection... If he can do that, then he understands why his partner has to try.* Just... Just make you're YOU'RE alright...! *Gene raises his head just a little - as much as he can manage - to get one last look at Sam. And though all he can see is a very faint shape in the gloom, it's something. He needs that image to get him through until Sam returns.* And... If you don't come back... *Sam can't help it, a laugh escapes him - slightly hysterical sounding, but he reigns himself in quickly, the grin still on his face. Gene... oh, Gene.* Didn't expect anythin' less from you. *With Gene looking up at him at the moment, it's easy for Sam to give in to the temptation of leaning down and kissing him once more, for good measure. Then, carefully, Sam lowers his partner back down, making sure his head comes to rest on top of the bunched-up jacket. He leaves the torch where it is for now, moving over to the backpack and emptying it out. There is one more water bottle left in there, and he sets it down next to Gene.* Drink as often as you can. *He makes sure to wrap the bandages in cloth so they don't get dirty, and can't help but curse their rotten luck which placed the antiseptics Gene had gathered in the other backpack - the one Sam hadn't picked up. But thinking about that won't help... he'll get it back. Maybe he'll get back even more, if the hoarde hasn't completely wrecked the shed. Once the backpack is ready, Sam picks up the metal pipe he had used earlier and weighs it in his hands. It still feels sturdy, and there are no dents in it - the only thing indicating its recent history are the dark splotches all over the its upper half. For a moment, Sam remembers what it was like, battering the zombies with it. How natural it felt, swinging it around like a sword. Sam switches the pipe to his dominant hand, the bite on his neck and shoulder giving a throb at this, reminding that he himself is nowhere near in top shape. .... But that doesn't matter now. Gene is worse off. The thought sends a first wave of adrenaline pumping through Sam's body. He needs to go. Sam moves over to Gene one last time, picking up the torch.* I'll need that, sorry... *he glances at the heavy door. He can't remember if there was a bolt on the outside... shit. What if it won't close? He needs to make sure no one (and nothing) can come in...* ... I'll secure the door from outside. You'll... you'll 'ave to try an' be as silent as you can. *He should say something else... but Sam can't think of anything. He really needs to go.* ... see you in a bit. |

*staying silent shouldn't be hard - if he doesn't move, that is. Maybe he can just fall asleep... Though deep down he knows that's going to be impossible. *Again, a smile plays around Sam's lips for a moment.* Will do. *And with that, Sam knows he can't afford wasting any more time. He turns around and listens hard for a moment. No sounds to be heard from outside. Slowly, he moves the bolt, presses down the handle.... and carefully, so carefully opens the door, waiting a moment before shining his torch outside. Nothing. No sounds, no movement. Every muscle tense and ready, Sam starts edging outside. He can't afford to look back now. Finally he's outside, pulling the door shut. He was wrong earlier, there was a bolt on the outside as well, and he pulls it into place now. He's coming back, so there is no danger of Gene having to rot in that room forever. He's coming back. He can hear faint groaning and shuffling down the hallway, but it isn't coming from where he remembers the hatch to be, so he ignores it, silently moving down the tunnel. The ground becomes more uneven, more difficult to tread, but Sam makes it, and finds that he was right - there is a ladder, and he even manages to pull it down, though it does give an ominous creak. Inwardly prepared for the worst, Sam slowly pushes the hatch up, even preparing for the possibility that it won't even budge.* |

*When Sam pushes the hatch up, the sight he'll be met with is one of destruction. The carnage he'd inflicted with the pipe before fleeing still lays on the ground, along with the debris of the moving hoarde. The effects that the cannibals had left are trampled and soiled, trodden into the dirty floor. The door to the room remains open, hanging off its hinges. Something must have fallen against it. Despite all the mess, the coast looks clear though. The scene is quiet, no walkers left in the room. There are faint moans from outside, but only a few. Looks like Sam might be lucky!* |

*It seems like the coast is clear, but Sam isn't about to let his guard down. He waits a good while, listening hard and scanning the area, taking in every little detail. The destruction, the dirt, the corpses. Finally, Sam clambers up fully, carefully closing the hatch. Now his search begins. He searches every nook and cranny. There is one short moment of elation when, completely unexpectedly, Sam finds Gene's coat. It's just as dirty as the rest of the room, but through a stroke of luck it hasn't been soiled as badly, and the hem isn't much more frayed than it already had been. Folding it as tightly as he can and stuffing it into his empty backpack, Sam continues his search. He comes across a knife or two which he puts away as well - the more weapons he has at his disposal the better - but soon he comes to realise that he won't find what he really needs: medication. The thought makes him grit his teeth. He'll... he'll have to go outside. Light is filtering in through the doorway, and it seems quiet enough out there... but open space means that much more danger. Still, he has to do it, doesn't he. Maybe this isn't the only building around here... maybe there's more... One last look around the room, and then Sam sneaks over to the doorway, carefully peering out.* |

*outside the scene is pretty much the same. There are corpses, bodies of cannibals - ironically cannibalised. The mud is soaked, churned up and sodden, painting the debris and carnage like thick paint. Things are knocked over, structures damaged. People may have tried to climb to safety or barricade themselves in, only to have their protection torn down. In short, the place is in ruin. A couple of walkers are within Sam's line of sight, docile and still. Their harsh breaths grate out through the air, but that's the only sign that they're alive. Or half-alive, anyway. Somewhere in the mud though, there's a different sound. A huff, a groan. Sounds of pain. A squelch as someone tries to pull themselves across the sticky ground....* |

*The sight that presents itself to Sam outside makes his stomach churn. It reminds him of what Manchester was like, when they left... The destruction, the corpses, blood and innards staining the ground... Suddenly, he can't quite believe how lucky Gene and he were. The cannibals basically served as a distraction for them to make it to safety... Sam suppresses a shiver and starts to edge outside, keeping a keen eye on the walkers he can see. He won't pick a fight if it isn't necessary, but knowing where they are will be essential to his well-being. Gripping his weapon that little bit tighter, Sam makes his way through the mud, moving carefully so as not to make any unnecessary sounds. Sounds like... like the squelch he just heard. At first, he had thought those were walker moans, but a moment later he realises that, no - it's someone who's alive, someone who feels actual pain. His heart beats a little harder at that. If it's one of the cannibals... He might be able to get information of of them...! Slowly, Sam follows the direction of the sound, getting steadily closer. He's spotted a few other huts by now, some larger than the one they were in, some significantly smaller. If those were used by the group as well, chances are there are going to be supplies there. Having reached a corner, Sam takes a breath before peering around it, ready to pounce at anything that might be hostile towards him-!* |

*When Sam peers around the corner, he'll be met with more scenes of destruction - but also the sight of a figure lying in the mud, caked in the stuff. A familiar face, a smear of blood on his cheek. It's the doctor. The man drags himself forward once, more, grunting as he does. On the back of his calf is a very visible injury - a circular tear in his trouser leg, ripped by something closing on it and pulling. Teeth marks decorate the skin underneath. The man looks up, checking for a clear path - and spots a face poking out from behind the wall. His eyes widen - god, is that another walker? No, no it can't be... Walkers don't spy like that... "Hey! Hey, you! Help me up!"* |

*At the sight, Sam's eyes widen as well, because he knows that man. Immediately, flashes of memory - the examination, stabbing Gene (bastard bastard BASTARD), ordering Sam to be dragged outside - and along with them, a surge of that irrational rage that had kept Sam going. Now, he remains still for a long moment, gathering himself and pushing back the red-hot anger. Only then does he step out from around the corner. He looks the doctor up and down, silently - spots the bite. So much for that one, then... Still carefully, Sam moves closer, until he's standing right in front of the man, looking down at him, not saying a word.* |

*The doctor's words do nothing to better his chances. Suddenly hyper-aware, his senses sharpening, Sam picks up on all the tiny implications - opportunism, and that the man assumes that Gene is dead. It sends another surge of anger through him. After a moment of silence, Sam crouches down - and with a quick motion, he grabs the doctor's dirty shirt and pulls him up, his grip like iron and his face betraying the storm that's brewing inside him. His voice, however, is deceptively calm as he speaks, though there is no question that the doctor better not argue.* I need antiseptics, antibiotics and painkillers. You'll lead me to your stash. *Because in a way, Sam should thank his lucky stars that he came across this man, of all people... *Sam himself isn't exactly at 100% himself, but there's something within him giving him the strength to keep his hold on the doctor's shirt tight and unrelenting. A humourless smile flashes over his lips. What a pathetic excuse for a human being - even now trying to be better, to outwit him. Sam finds himself reminded of interrogations that happened in a different life, when it was his job to show people how useless their lies were. Almost effortlessly, Sam slips into his role. His voice is low as he speaks, controlled, but there is something simmering underneath the surface, something dangerous.* You wouldn't 'ave been movin' about if you didn't think you still stood a chance of disinfecting and dressing that bite. You're a doctor, your group was well organised, so there must be a storage somewhere. You were tryin' to get there. And... *Here, something flashes in Sam's eyes, and a tremor runs through him - he can see Gene, his leg bleeding, pale, in pain... When he continues to speak, there's a slightly feral edge to his voice.* ... You have so much to lose, my friend. Your fingers, your hands, your feet, your limbs, your eyes, your ears, your nose, your tongue-- *Sam catches himself, taking a breath, two sides warring inside him, fighting for control* ... I can make your life a living hell before you cop it, and believe me, I will. *He gives the doctor a short, rough shake* Lead me to your reserves, or find out just how much you 'ave to lose. So, shooting the doctor a warning glare, Sam moves up to the door, listening intently at first. *Finally. Suppressing the urge to go any further with his threats, Sam relents and removes the knife from the man's throat entirely. However, he maintains his hold on the doctor's arm and grabs his shoulder with his other hand - a warning that the knife is still there as well, ready to be used if necessary. The door is still ajar, and since so far nothing has come out to get them, Sam has to assume that the room behind it is empty. All the better. He uses his foot to open it further, and then he pushes the doctor through, keeping a firm grip on him. And finally they're inside. Sam lets go of the man and pushes him forward a few steps, quickly following suit and staying close to him - can't leave that scum on his own.* Off you go then. And make it quick. *He may have stowed away the pipe in his backpack, but Sam's grip on the knife is firm and secure. *the doctor flinches as the knife touches his skin once more - jeez, he can't say anything right, can he!! "Okay, Jesus!! You just thread the needle and sew from one side of the wound to the other - deep enough to hold, but not so deep you hit the muscle. Then cut it out if it heals up. Alright!?" If Sam doesn't know this much, he doesn't have high hopes for the other man's recovery. It doesn't look like he knows what he's doing. Letting him run off with this much kit is going to hurt* |

*Sam's eyes search the doctor's face - he needs to make sure he does this right, as right as he can... And of course he knows how to sew on a button, that's easy. But to sew up his partner? He can't screw that up. There's a few seconds of oppressing silence. Then, Sam steps back, lowering the knife. He doesn't turn away from the man, but he kneels down as he lets the backpack slide off his back, starting to pick up the packages of medication that are now scattered on the ground, inspecting it one by one before putting it away. He may seem occupied, but he's still very aware of what the doctor might get up to... And the knife is still in his hand. With his jacket still serving as Gene's blanket, Sam is wearing nothing more than his dirty shirt, and dishevelled as everyone is these days, at this angle the bite is fully visible.* |

*As Sam crouches down, the doctor watches carefully. He could make a move... He could try and tackle Sam. Try and maybe rush him... But no, he still has the knife. And it's clear that he's on edge, ready to retaliate should he need to. So he grits his teeth and watches Sam steal the medicine. His eye is drawn to something though - something on the crook of Sam's neck. The bite. Suddenly his own leg throbs, the memory cutting through the adrenaline for a moment. This is a man who's lived through the infection. He made it through the fever alive. There must be a reason... "How did you survive that? What did you do?"* |

*Sam glances up, sees the doctor's stare - he must be looking at the bite. There's a strong urge to reach up, to cover the wound up and just not answer, but Sam resists - he needs to hurry. So, continuing to pack away the drugs (careful with the needles...!), Sam gives a somewhat tense shrug.* Nothing. I was going to die, so there was no point. *And, thinking back, they really didn't do anything different to when Vince was bitten... They tried to disinfect his wound as well, but it didn't help. Sam looks up again, throwing a glance at the man's leg. That bit looks fairly vicious... But the fever doesn't seem to have kicked in yet, so he must've been bitten quite recently... There's no telling whether Sam was just a lucky one-off or not, but he finds himself hoping that this man doesn't survive.* |

*at this, he looks down at his own torn trousers with a sting of fear. No advice, then. No hints on how to keep himself alive. Goddammit, they should have just butchered the both of them when they had the chance. Then maybe they'd have been less distracted. Maybe they'd have seen the hoarde before it was too late. The doctor narrows his eyes at Sam, the lack of helpful information making him cranky. "Oh come on. I've helped you, now you help me. You're alive - you must have done something - something to stop the infection. Tell me!"* |

*Sam feels himself bristling at the doctor's insisting, and as he packs away the last package of painkillers, he glares up at the man. Still... He knows what this man is going through. The fear. Sam still feels like he could kill him, easily, just for what he did to Gene, but... There is still some part left in him that's pushing at the steely resolve, trying to keep the anger at bay. So, as Sam gets up to his feet again, he thinks back.* ... We tried to wash out the bite with water. Hurt like hell, though. *shrugs* That's all. S'not like we had more resources than you do now. *Now, does he really have everything....* ... I need antiseptics. *He'll need food and water as well... But for this, he'll venture out on his own. He doesn't trust this man, and the thought of what this group has been living off puts Sam off even further.* |

*Sam catches the bottle, satisfaction throbbing through him for a moment - finally... he's got all he needs in terms of fixing Gene. The doctor's words, however, make him look up, and there's a dangerous glint in his eyes as he stares at the man.* You want the short cut then? Want me to slit your throat? *Sam gives a little nod, to emphasise his next words* I could do that, if you want. There's enough walkers around as is, don't need any more. *And in this moment, he means it. He knows that he would go through with it. There's a small part of him that's screaming in terror at the thought, but it's being drowned out by the vengeful rest of him.* |

He looks back at the doctor - bloodied, bedraggled, equal parts scared and indignant. He shouldn't be leaving him on his own. But he hurt Gene. Sam's gaze hardens once more.* Dont try to follow me. |

You seriously think-- *Sam breaks off, needing to regain control over himself - his voice had been growing dangerously loud there.* No. You're on your own. *He's being irrational, he knows it - a bigger group means bigger chances of survival. But the image of this very man, stabbing Gene, is flashing through his mind over and over. He won't forgive that, ever. San turns around and starts to walk towards the door. He's done here. He'll try and find water and food, and then he needs to get back to Gene - he's left him on his own for far too long already.* |

The words tumble out of his mouth quickly - an attempt at getting Sam's attention. His legs beginning to throb... The virus must be well and truly in his bloodstream. "Don't be mad about your mate! We were surviving, we needed food! I had to do it! They run otherwise!" Scrabbling for something else to halt Sam, he shouts. "I can save 'im! I know the human body. *Sam does slow down, even coming to a halt, hand stopping mid-air as he raises it to open the door. He can hear the despair in the man's voice. He can hear the need to survive. However, he cannot hear genuine regret. And he still hears Gene's scream, ragged and filled with pain as the knife tore into his leg. Sam's hand curls into a trembling fist. No. This is for Gene's own good as well. He can't let that man - that creature - anywhere near his partner, ever again. The doctor is dead to him. There's no point in reacting. Sam's hand uncurls and he pushes open the door, putting away the knife and pulling the metal bar out of his backpack once more. He lets the door fall shut behind him, never looking back. Right... Food and water. Sam scans his surroundings, needing to reassess the situation.* |

Sam survived and so will be. Determined, he starts gathering armfuls of medical supplies, actively ignoring the fact that it's useless. *Sam casts a glance up - shit, looks like rain again... He'll have to hurry. With just his shirt on (and it's somewhat wet still, clinging to his skin uncomfortably) he'll be completely exposed to the weather, and he's aware enough to know that his body won't be able to take many more extremes. Moving carefully, Sam once again makes his way from one building to the next. There are still a few he hasn't had a look at yet, and one of them is bound to be for food storage... And hopefully there won't be any... meat... The thought makes Sam feel sick, but there's that anger again as well, making him take a deep breath and releasing it slowly. Then, hearing a sound, he quickly ducks behind a large metal barrel - and just in time to hide from the walker that shows up only seconds later. Sam can hear it, can identify it by its trudging steps, the hiss of air flowing through decaying lungs. He clutches his weapon a bit tighter, fighting the urge to throw himself at the creature, to eliminate it immediately - the less there are in the world the better - but for now, his rational mind wins the inner fight, and he stays down, until the walker's footsteps recede into the distance. Only then does Sam continue on, his heart beating fast, adrenaline coursing through his system again. He promised Gene not to get into unnecessary fights. He promised. Following his gut instinct, Sam goes for a building at the back of the cluster - the heavy metal door tells him that it might possibly be cooler than the other huts... perfect for storing food and drink. Once more he has to steel himself for whatever may be lurking behind those doors... Sam waits with baited breath, trying to listen for any suspicious sounds, but finally he takes a step back before pressing his boot against the door and pushing it open suddenly, ready to strike with his metal pipe.* |

*the room is dark and shadowed with no windows, but in the middle of the room a large table is visible. There are marks in it, slashes and dents - and the wood is stained with substances it's probably better not to think about. In the corner there are a couple of large bins, binbags and a collection of knives and saws. Safe to say that this is where the 'meat' is carved. This is definitely a food storage building. Two doors decorate the far wall, one of them bolted shut (and blood spattered - meat storage, most likely) and the other is unlocked and cleaner. There are stains on the concrete floor, but if Sam looks carefully he'll also notice some fresh blood drops. And if he looks even closer, he'll notice the hunched human-shaped figure beside one of the bins. It's moving, but not a lot... * |

*Oh, God. Sam has seen a lot during the last few months, but this... The stains, the blood, the implications - it all makes him gag. And the thought that this is where Gene would have ended up... Sam's eyes adapt to the darkness slowly, and that is when he notices the hunched over figure on the other side of the room. His muscles growing even more tense, Sam switches the pipe for the knife quickly, and then advances slowly. If this were a Walker, it would have attacked him by now... So it must be one of the cannibals. ... Or one of their victims...? If they can point him to nonhuman food... Quietly, voice tense, Sam calls out* ... Hello? |

*The figure twitches at the sound of Sam's voice, flinching as though it's only just realised there's someone there. Quickly, it turns its head. Rags. The man is bloody and covered in dirt, painted in a sticky wash of red and brown - the only flesh colour on him two streaks from his eyes, stripes down his cheeks. And in the gloom, just visible, a large bite on his arm. A chunk is missing from it, ripped off by hungry teeth. And on his side is another. He's not got long left, that's obvious. His eyes focus on Sam, blurry and disorientated, his voice a hoarse whisper. ".... You...!"* |

*Sam's eyes are slowly adjusting to the gloom in here, but he'd recognise that voice anywhere, remembers it rasping at him, remembers the man cutting Gene's face. Sam advances carefully, taking in the state of the man in front of him. He doesn't say a word - what would he even say? Rags can't give him anything, not the way he is now. Who knows if he really is recognising Sam, even...? Finally, Sam is stood directly in front of the man, looking down on him, still silent. He shouldn't be wasting time. He should continue on into one of the other rooms, see if there's anything they can use... But something is keeping him from walking past Rags. Maybe it's the thought of him becoming a Walker soon - with bites like that, and judging from his general posture, it won't be long now. Maybe it's that rolling anger inside him, urging him to take revenge.* |

... *Sam as well knew it would come to this. Rags' request doesn't surprise him in the least, not with the way the man was acting when he captured Sam and Gene. It makes sense that he would choose to go this way. But Sam isn't moving, just staring down at the man, staring into his glistening eyes. Killing him now would mean doing him a favour. It would mean following his request, when he'd made a point of being cruel earlier, when he cut Gene's face... Sam's grip on the knife tightens - the way he's holding it, the blade is pointing backwards. He doesn't want to do this man any favours, he wants him to suffer. Sam's breathing grows a little heavier at the thought, rage and lust for revenge rolling through him. He wants to see Rags suffer, he wants to see him cry, beg, writhe in pain, scream, and then finally, die, and then he'd kill him all over again, when he comes back as a Walker... Yes....! Sam's mouth twitches, about to pull into a cruel smile, when another thought flashes through him. Gene needs you. That stops him short. Makes Sam exhale shakily, blink. Suddenly, all thoughts of revenge are gone. He has to get back as quickly as possible - he's been gone too long already. Kill Rags, grab the food, get back down. Sam steps forward finally, flipping the knife in his hand so that the blade is pointing forwards, at Rags.* Tell me where you store the water, and food. *Sam doesn't move straight away, instead looking down at Rags silently, assessing the truthfulness of is words. It's obvious, though, that this man has no more reason to lie... and he's different from the doctor, Sam can see that. So, finally, he moves past Rags wordlessly, carefully pushing open the door he'd indicated. And, God, the relief. There really is food in there, a surprising amount of it - and water. Enough bottles of water to last them for a few days, hopefully. Sam walks back, stopping next to Rags and then kneeling down, silently observing the man, taking in the injuries he sustained. He'll be turning soon. Once more, a desire for revenge rolls through Sam, makes him grit his teeth. But the more rational part of his mind is urging him to finish this quickly and get back to Gene, and he knows that this is the right thing to do. Gene takes priority, he always will. I hope you understand that. *And then, finally, Sam reaches out, grabbing the man's hair and pulling back his head, revealing his throat. His grip is strong, secure, and his other hand is steady as it raises the knife, rests the blade against Rags' skin. There's one moment during which the world seems to stand still. All Sam can hear is his own breathing amplified to his own ears, the rush of blood, the thudding of his heart. The thud of Rags' heart, the pulse beating against the knife, so fast. So alive. *Sam backs away near immediately, but he can't prevent the spray of blood splattering onto his shirt, staining his trousers. Up on his feet now, Sam stares down at Rags' prone form, right up to the moment when he finally stops moving. During the last few months, he's had to do a lot of things he's never wanted to do. He's had to leave behind colleagues, friends. Steal food and other things to get by. He's had to shoot down the snarling creature that once was his aunt Heather. But in all that time, he's never killed another human being. With Vince, they'd waited until the fever had taken him, and even then it was Gene who planted the final bullet, even though Sam was aching to take at least that burden off his shoulders. Now, he has killed someone, in cold blood. At Rags' request, yes, but... Sam looks down at the bloodied knife in his hand. He killed someone. And part of him enjoyed it. It's that thought that makes Sam snap to it, suddenly. He moves past the corpse, back into the food storage. He needs to get back, he needs to hurry. Wiping his hands quickly, almost desperately, Sam lets his eyes flick over the shelves. He doesn't have a lot of space left in the backpack, so water will take priority - but there's a lot of canned food there, and crisps, even some sweets. Sam drops the knife to the ground carelessly, lets the backpack slide to the ground as well, and then he starts shoving as many bottles and cans into the bag as he can. Once he's done, Sam shoulders the backpack again and makes his way outside - though he can't help it, his gaze is drawn down to Rags' body once more. The blood has spread by now, and Sam's had no choice but walk right through the puddle. The sight is equal parts horrifying and satisfactory. Gritting his teeth, Sam hurries on, his trusted iron pipe at the ready as he checks that his path outside is clear. From there, it's easy to get back to the building and down the mine shaft. Sam makes sure to close and lock the door - luckily it survived the earlier onslaught of undead. The hatch, however, didn't, so Sam has no choice but to simply climb down the ladder. Now he has to be careful - there's moans echoing through the tunnel, too close for comfort. Armed with the torch and his pipe, Sam carefully makes his way further to where the room is. There is no avoid the undead down here, though, so before he manages to reach the door, Sam has to fight three of them. Finally, though, he's reached the door - blood-splattered, breathing heavily, his body trembling with exhaustion and yet thrumming with nervous energy. The door itself seems unharmed, and that gives Sam hope. Quietly, he calls out* Gene? Gene, it's me. I'm comin' inside. *Because he wouldn't want to give Gene a heart attack on top of everything else... One last glance up and down the tunnel, to make sure there's nothing lurking, about to throw itself at him, and then Sam pulls back the bolt and pushes open the door, closing it behind himself quickly again. He's sure he locks the door as well and lets his weapon and the backpack drop to the ground, but the next thing he really is aware of is kneeling next to his partner, reaching out to touch his unhurt cheek.* I'm back...! |

*While Sam's gone, Gene's left floating in a dark sea of uncertainty. Without even a hint of moonlight or a match to see by all he's met with when he opens his eyes is thick suffocating blackness. And there's a Sam-shaped hole beside him. Feeling hot and cold at the same time, he's not sure whether to try and cover up more or let the air touch his skin. So he lies there and listens to his own ragged breathing ; concentrates on the odd trickle he feels rolling down his forehead and throb-throb-throb in his leg. He shouldn't have let Sam go. Seconds tick into minutes, tick into what feels like hours and still his partner hasn't returned. And with every second that passes, Gene's heartbeat speeds up that little bit more. Where is he? How long has it been? What was that noise outside? Is it him? Is it a Walker, gnashing its teeth and scraping itself against the door? Again it falls silent save for the pumping of his own heart. Jesus, how long has it been now?! He tries to move, hoping to try and sit himself up a little more - but he flops back down again, his teeth biting his own tongue to keep from shouting out. He can't do it. He can't do anything. Maybe Sam's left him. Gene knows he wouldn't, but... He's useless like this. And he can't even concentrate. He can't walk, can't think... Sam's better off on his own. Maybe he's finally turned. Maybe he's collapsed up there somewhere, something tearing at him and-- A hopeless shiver rolls through Gene, and he doesn't even bother to hold in his whimper of despair. There's nobody to hear it. Nobody to calm his racing, jumbled thoughts. Sam isn't here. Where is he? He went to get help... To get... Something. What was it again? God, it's hot in here. There's no air. He can't breathe properly...! Sam's knock and hushed call don't reach Gene - but the touch to his cheek and the sudden light burning his eyes do. He flinches, blinking blindly up at the blurred shape in front of him. Out of reflex his hand shoots up clumsily, trying to feel for a hand, a face - anything. In a strained voice - * Sam?! Is it--? *He can't tell, he can't see!* Are you-- Did they-- *Shit, his words. They won't come out in the right bloody order!* |

*Putting down the torch quickly, Sam catches Gene's hand and squeezes it. But Christ... he's burning up....! And his voice sounds so... strained and anguished...* Sshhh, sshh, Gene, it's alright, I'm fine, I'm - *swallows, wiling his racing heart to calm down* I'm okay. No injuries. And, and I've got what we needed, I can fix you now. *smiles shakily, not even sure whether Gene can see him properly...* It'll be alright... |

*Sam's voice causes a flood of anxiety to rush from Gene - he's back, he's alive. And the hand grabbing his feels solid and warm. Not a hallucination or a dream. God, he's grateful. He doesn't quite focus on what Sam says yet though, instead trying to draw him closer. No injuries, Sam said. But it's too dark, he can't see for himself. What if he's lying? What if he was bitten again?* Nothing bit you? Nothing... Nothing got you? |

*Sam goes with Gene's tugging, unable to help himself, leaning over his partner to make sure Gene really can see his face.* Nothing got me. M'all in one piece. *He squeezes Gene's hand that little bit more tightly, his other hand stroking back through Gene's hair, and finally Sam leans down properly and presses a kiss to Gene's lips. Then he pulls back a little, smiling still* Promised you, didn't I. |

*Nothing got him... thank god... The press of lips against his own slows his heartbeat a little, taking some of his anxiety away. Sam's here, he made it back. And even though he can feel himself burning up, a headache brewing, shivers down his body... Maybe.. maybe things till be okay. Maybe they will, if Sam's here... He forces a grin and nods.* Yeah. And you always k-keep yer promises, eh. |

*Sam nods in return, his smile widening with relief - if Gene is still coherent enough for banter like this, then it's going to be alright, surely...* Yeah. Kept my other promise too - I found painkillers and antibiotics and everythin' else we need. Hang on... *Sam pulls his hands away (though the torch is still on, so Gene should be able to see Sam) and lets his backpack slide to the ground, pulling it close and quickly rummaging through it. One after another, he pulls out the water bottles, the food cans, and then finally the bundle of medication and bandages he pilfered, along with the sewing kit (though he makes sure Gene can't see that yet). And finally...* Look at this... *Sam pulls out Gene's coat, unfolding it a little so that Gene can see what exactly Sam is holding in his hands.* |

*in the dim torch light Gene can't see much - but he catches the reflective glitter of water, the shine from cans of food - and then the kicker. His coat. Stunned, Gene's mouth drops open, his fingers rising to touch the worn material. He'd thought he'd never see that again. It almost feels like a piece of himself returning. His armour, his thick skin. This piece of camel coloured fabric's been with him through thick and thin - and the thought that if he makes it through this he'll be able to wear it again is fantastic. All pain forgotten for a moment, Gene whispers in gratitude.* You...You found it... *swallows, squinting back up at Sam in the gloom.* You went after the... most important things then, c-clearly! |

*Even in the gloom, Gene's gratitude is evident, palpable in the way he reaches out for the coat, runs his hand over the material. It fills Sam with a warmth he hadn't thought possible, and a real smile spreads on his lips as he lets Gene take the coat properly.* Of course. *However, despite this moment of peace, Sam knows he can't waste any more time. Gene's wounds need to be treated. Sam reaches for the medical supplies now, starting to lay them out next to himself, along with a couple of water bottles.* How're you feelin'? Has it gotten any... any better? *Not very likely, but Sam can't bear to ask whether it's gotten even worse. He just needs to distract Gene a little while he gets everything ready... The syringes, antiseptics, the sewing kit...* |

*Sam's pause in the middle of the question stands out like a sore thumb - Gene can tell what he was going to ask, and he shakes his head helplessly.* Can't... Can't tell. Can't really tell what hurts and what doesn't any more. *there are noises to the side of him - Sam sorting out their supplies, most likely. He could turn his head and try to look, but he wouldn't be able to make anything out in the dark anyway.* |

*Gene's reply puts a damper in Sam's comparatively high spirits - but that was to be expected... No time to lose.* Right. *takes a breath* I've got everything we need. Everything to properly close up that wound and reduce the pain. *leans in again - he doesn't want to be this direct about it, but he knows he has to be... So Sam reaches out and squeezes Gene's hand, needing to make sure that his partner stays calm. * I'll do my best to stitch it up. I've got anaesthetics for local application so it shouldn't hurt. *Not any more than it already is.* |

*Gene stiffens. Stitch him up? Sam's going to stitch him up?? With a shaky breath, Gene whispers to himself.* Jesus... *it has to be done, Gene knows. The deep stab wound feels like fire burning burning... He needs it to close... To start to heal. If he's going to stand a chance he's going to have to let it happen. But with the amount of pain he's already in, the thought of experiencing more frightens Gene more than he'd like to admit.* .... S'pose it's too much to hope that.... Embroidery's one of yer well-practised passtimes? |

*Sam's own chest tightens in response to Gene's visible discomfort. He doesn't want to have to do this... Sam doesn't trust himself to do good enough a job, can't he sure that he won't end up causing Gene even more pain. But what other choice do they have? So Sam forces a grim smile.* I'm a fast learner. *glances down at his supplies again, then determinedly goes for the bottle of water first, using as little water as possible to wash his hands. Next, a bit of antiseptic - he needs to do this as correctly as he can... But before he starts to even unwrap Gene's bandage he quickly extracts a pill from one of the painkiller packets along with the water, helping Gene sit up a little.* 'Ere, that should deal with the fever at least... *And hopefully take at least a little of the pain away...! * |
