*Frank Morgan. Sam got used to life in 1973. Not exactly complacent - he still longs to go home - but... he stopped fighting quite so hard. He made more of an effort to get along with everyone. Until Frank Morgan came along, and toppled all of that. Now, Sam feels torn. He wants to go home. He wants to. But... there are things keeping him here as well. Chris has become an avid student, and Sam enjoys playing the role of mentor. Leaving Annie, after everything she's done for him, feels like betrayal. And Gene... Well... Sam stops walking, looking up at the sky for a moment. It's heavily cloudy, promising rain. Better hurry up... Pulling his jacket's collar up a bit higher, Sam continues on, his cuban heels clacking on the cobblestones. He can't say that he and Gene are dating. For one because Gene would punch him, and for another because even Sam wouldn't use that term. A quick fumble in an alleyway, Gene getting him off in the Cortina in the dead of the night... That one time they dragged each other into Lost & Found and practically had a fight over who was to give the first blowjob... That's not dating. Sam doesn't know what it is, but it isn't dating. And yet, it isn't just impersonal sex either. Because Sam cares. He cares about what happens to Gene. He gets worried when he notices Gene starting his day off with whiskey for breakfast. When his cough sounds horribly chesty. When he's staring off into space, thinking no one is watching him. Stepping through the gate to the cemetery, Sam shakes his head. He's tried to puzzle this out many times over the last few weeks, and it's never lead him anywhere. Asking Gene out "officially" is out of the question, surely. And it's not like Sam wants to get involved properly anyway - if he's going to go home... And there he is again, at the beginning of that thought cycle. Sam stops, looks around until he spots the familiar figure, stood in the distance beneath a tree, looking at one of the graves. Morgan asked Sam to meet him there. Sam ignores a creeping feel of dread at the sight, takes a breath and makes his way over to the man. Whatever he wants to talk about, hopefully they'll be done before it starts raining... Sam didn't bring an umbrella. Once he's close enough, Sam calls out.* Frank? |

*Sam's good eye widens a little with surprise. Then, there's a very subtle change in his gaze to relief and... And hope. Gene seems to be starting to accept it... That is fantastic. Even the tiniest step is a success at this point.* Good man. A small spark in his eye, the vampire takes a hold of the mug (his fingers brushing over Gene's for a moment) and pours the remaining blood into it. Then, he pushes it back towards Gene.* |

*Grumpily, Gene takes the blood and holds his breath as he finishes it. And that isn't the last lot of blood he's made to drink over the next few hours. The vampire rears its head again, tries to fight Sam again both mentally and physically. It seems just about as pleased to be a part of Gene as Gene is to be a part of it, and though it still doesn't completely understand Sam's motivations it does its best to try and contain itself. More than once though, after a failed escape attempt or a sudden bout of unexpected bloodlust, Gene breaks down. Shouts at Sam, blames him, blames himself, wishes he was dead. Threatens to throw himself through his best wooden table and hope the shards stick. But the break downs wear off, always. And Gene is left morose and irritable. Sam's vampire is doing its best... But Sam... He misses Sam. He can't believe that this is how things have ended up. He's here and Sam isn't. It hurts more than he could have imagined. It takes another week for the vampire in Gene to settle enough that Gene can just about tolerate it when it does. He's never going to accept it. Never. But his resolve has been worn down to the point where he no longer plunges into a deep depression whenever it emerges. This is the best he can hope for, really. And at last, Gene and Sam's vampire find themselves having a relatively calm night in front of the TV. Gene's vampire is sleeping, thankfully. And it gives Gene a chance to talk to Sam without the danger of it ruining everything. Lowering his mug full of blood (he still can't get used to that), Gene looks over at Sam. * Y'know, I've been wondering something. |

*Gene accepting the mug once more feels like a little bit of a milestone. If he's ready to accept this... then the vampire is confident things will be alright. Relatively. He owes it to Gene as well as his human side to do his best in keeping Gene sober. And it isn't easy, of course it isn't. Gene's vampire breaks through whenever it gets the chance, and the ensuing struggles result in a broken chair and some damage to the floor. When Gene threatens to just take his own life... That's when it really gets difficult. The vampire doesn't know what to say as Gene yells at him, cursing him for having turned Gene, then turning on himself with the blame... What can he say, other than that he doesn't want Gene gone? He's still a part of Sam, if a small one - his feelings for Gene are, at this point, genuine. Genuine enough for him to manage to talk the other man out of his suicide. It leaves them both exhausted, but while Gene slips into a trance finally, Sam remains alert. He doesn't give himself a moment's rest for the next seven days, always looking out for his partner, always ready for... for anything. And slowly... ever so slowly... things seem to calm down. Docile is the wrong word to use, but Gene's vampire definitely seems more collected when he shows up, even though he still doesn't miss a chance to insult Sam one way or another. But at least he looks Sam in the eye when they speak, even seems to be looking at him with something like respect. When Gene is fully himself, though... The vampire can tell that Gene doesn't view him as complete. And who could blame him? Sam, his Sam, is gone, for good. And Gene knows this. So to have to look at the vampire, in Sam's body... He can't imagine how difficult it must be. And even though it hurts, the vampire doesn't show it. He's very good at that, better than his human side could ever have hoped to be. So now that they're finally spending a quiet evening in front of the telly, Sam looks quite relaxed. He's huddled up like a cat on the sofa like he had been all those weeks ago after his transformation, but this time it's a sign that he trusts Gene enough to let his guard down a little. When Gene raises his voice, Sam looks over at him, his one eye slightly hooded, the red glowing just faintly. He's got a mug as well, but his is already empty. He doesn't quite sit up yet, but something about Gene's tone of voice sparks interest within him. This is the first time he's taken initiative to start up a conversation, after all... and this seems important. But Sam's voice is soft, neutral as he responds* What's that? |

*Okay... Sam seems interested. Gene hopes that this won't seem out of the blue... But it's the only time he feels he's able to talk without the vampire interrupting. So he has to take the chance. Gathering himself, Gene fidgets with his mug in his lap and tries to get his words out.* After what 'appened... Well, y'know what I've been like. You've had to stop me flipping out more than once. ... An' I remember what Morgan did. To you. ... How're you not...? *Gene falters, unsure of how to word it.* |

*The vampire listens, his head cocked to the side ever so slightly. At Gene's last words, his eyebrow raises a little.* ... Not 'flipping out', you mean? *He looks off to the side, thinking about it. It's a valid question, no doubt - but the vampire has to admit he didn't really think about it until Gene came out with it. That's why it takes him a few seconds to come up with what he thinks is the answer, and when he does, his gaze is guarded as he looks back at Gene, breathing a small sigh.* I'm not sure you'll like the answer. |

*The vampire gives a little huff.* Fair enough. *He falls silent for a few moments, considering his words... But there is no way to delicately state what he thinks the answer is. And Gene deserves to know the truth, so the vampire won't even attempt to sugar-coat it.* ... Violence is part of our nature. We're used to it. *He shrugs lightly, apologetically* It's affecting you more because you're still... Whole. |

*At this, the vampire actually smiles sadly for a moment.* By human standards. Look, I'm not saying it doesn't bother me at all. But vampires respond to violence differently. We're born from violence, after all. There are few things more traumatic than remembering your own murder. *And there is one other reason why the physical torture Morgan subjected him to doesn't seem to have left too many mental scars on him... but he isn't sure whether he wants to say it out loud. It's the fact that the death Gene suffered at Sam's hands was so much worse, so much more scarring than what was done to Sam, in the vampire's eyes at any rate.* |

*Gene stares at the vampire. The apology... It wasn't that Gene was trying to get it out of him... but now that it's there, he finds that he appreciates it. he knows that the vampire didn't want this. But at the same time, he still did it. He still turned Gene. The vampire's explained before, but Gene still doesn't feel like he really understands it. Sam had to drink to survive. So of course he understands the reason that Sam killed him. But turning him like that at the last minute... Gene shakes his head, a troubled look on his face.* Why'd you do it? Turn me? Was it you? Or Sam? |

*The vampire looks over at Gene, blinking in surprise. That was one of the first questions Gene had asked him, after he'd woken up... And Sam had tried to explain, at the time. But it must not have filtered through... And admittedly, the vampire had been stammering then as well, his story jumbled up... It shouldn't be a surprise to him that now, having settled in his new existence somewhat, Gene wants to know the whole story. But Gene's questions still catch him off guard. Was it you? Or Sam? Something about this hurts unexpectedly, makes the vampire's throat close up. He looks away, momentarily speechless, not knowing what to say or where to even start.* |

*Gene waits, sensing that this is difficult for the vampire. But he has to know. It's complicated, but... He doesn't hate Sam's vampire. Not any more. And as the days have gone on, he's seen how hard it's worked to keep him clean. Gene may still hate vampires, but he knows that Sam's is special. Strong. Willful. And good. And so Gene wants to hear from it, right from its heart. This vampire is all that's left of Sam - and that's something that Gene still hasn't got his head around. But it almost feels like... Sam's in there somewhere. Like a piece of Sam was left behind. And that makes it precious to him.* |

*The silence stretches, and the vampire actually can tell that it's because Gene is giving him time to respond... And that is something he immensely appreciates, as much as it surprises him. The last few days have been difficult, to say the least, and he didn't really expect Gene to warm up to him (even though of course he hoped for it). He uncurls, putting his feet back down on the ground, his hands loosely resting atop his knees. It's hard to find the words to describe what happened a week ago... But eventually, the vampire's lips part, and he begins to talk.* We... We were meant to be one, Sam and me. And we were. But... There was moment when it all just came apart. We were ripped apart. *His hands twitch, remembering.* ... It was when we blocked the bond. I think. Suddenly, it was him and me, and then we... Fell. Into darkness. *Which was when the... Thing... Took control of his body. The vampire shivers at the memory.* |

*The vampire shakes his head.* That's not what caused it... Primarily. *He isn't completely sure on this, of course - they still don't really know how exactly the bond worked, and so many things happened at once - but at least this, he thinks he can say with some certainty.* But... Yes. We blocked it, because we didn't-- *He breaks off, grimacing for a moment as he feels a slight sting across the scar stretching across his face* -- we didn't want you to feel... This. *he points up at his face.* ...I think it was the pain that did it. We couldn't hold onto ourselves any longer. *The vampire looks up and over at Gene then, a look of genuine regret and guilt in his expression.* We lost control. I lost hold of both Sam and... And everything else. What was left was... *He struggles for words for a few seconds, before shaking his head helplessly.* ... I don't know. Hunger, probably. |

*They didn't want Gene to feel the pain of his face burning. Gene should be grateful... But knowing that it meant Sam went through it alone hurts him just as much. And it's what beat him, in the end. *Even without the bond, the sadness in Gene's tone of voice is evident. His sympathy means more to the vampire than he could ever express with words... So he merely nods. Even though he said earlier that the memory of what happened doesn't bother him as much as it could, that particular memory is hard to bear nonetheless, when he allows himself to dwell on it. It's just that vampires are good at suppressing that which doesn't serve them. After a few seconds of silence, the vampire exhales softly, before continuing* When I came to... *He pauses, lips parted as he tries to get the words out... But it's difficult. The vampire closes his mouth, shaking his head a little before trying again.* ... When I came to, we were... Feeding. *He isn't looking at Gene anymore, instead staring down at his open palms.* I had no control. The hunger was too strong. And Sam... I couldn't-- couldn't find him, at first. *He remembers, then - yelling into the black void, trying desperately to get his human side to take back his body, to stop the tragedy from happening... The vampire's voice is quiet now.* ... I did rouse him, eventually. |

We both did. *He falls silent again, closing his eyes. For a good few second, the vampire is absolutely still. Then, he looks up again and at Gene. Gene asked him a question, and he deserves an answer.* ... I urged Sam to do it. *seeing the vampire this shaken feels odd. Unnatural. Usually it's so composed. But this is properly affecting him. Sam's vampire is beginning to let down some of his poker face. But the vampire's answer... So he persuaded Sam to turn him? Rallied him on perhaps? The question strikes him - what would have happened had the vampire not done that? Would Sam have let him die? It's an unsettling thought. It still isn't clear whether this was Sam's conscious choice, or whether the vampire was merely acting out of self preservation... Trying to keep Sam there when he was beginning to lose him. Knowing that this is difficult for both of them, Gene pauses before continuing. * ... You told him to do it? |

*Once again the vampire nods - he clearly remembers yelling at Sam, trying to get him to move, to save Gene the only way he knew... Because otherwise... The words come out as a pained whisper.* ... I was terrified of losing you both. You and him. *Two blows like that, at the same time... It didn't quite happen, but the thought still makes anxiety churn in his gut. And he knows this isn't normal - this isn't how vampires should react. Any other vampire would probably have rejoiced at finally getting rid of their human side... But he just feels empty. And in that moment, all it could do was try to keep Gene from disappearing altogether. Sam was going to vaporise anyway, what with the kill. That thought hurts him all over again. *The tentative weight on his shoulder is unexpected. The vampire opens his eyes to look over at Gene, his gaze sliding from his hand to his expression. And this... This is something few vampires have probably ever been confronted with. Sympathy. The vampire swallows, something indefinable rising in his chest. Lowering his gaze again, he reaches up and, after a moment's hesitation, places his own hand over Gene's. They haven't touched like this since... Well, since before. After that first night when Gene turned, the vampire had refrained from intimate contact, knowing that it would hurt Gene more than it would help. So this, now... It's welcome. They're united in their grief for Sam. After a few seconds, the vampire let's go again and takes a breath. A human would probably have broken down at this point... But he's a vampire. Vampires were made to endure and survive, not to feel. He takes a breath and speaks quietly, his voice a little rough still* ... To answer your question... I had no control, beyond trying to influence Sam. I told him what to do, but in the end, it... It was his decision. *He looks up again.* He was under pressure. So... Please... Don't blame him. |

*Gene sighs, his hand slowly dropping from the vampires shoulder.* I don't blame him. *It's the truth really. He's blamed the vampire a lot after being turned, but in reality, whether it was Sam or the vampire that turned him, the outcome was the same. And while Gene thinks that, had things been the other way around - had it been he forced to choose between turning Sam and letting him die for good, he wouldn't have put Sam through this.. Gene understands. He gets why Sam would have done it. Its just so painful to have to endure this without him. And after what the vampire's said... He understands that, too. In that moment, to both of them, it felt like they had to give Gene another chance. Gene couldn't just be.... Gone, especially by their hand. But before the vampire has a chance to say anything, Gene speaks again. And that truly leaves the vampire speechless for a good few seconds. He wasn't expecting this. Realising that he hasn't said anything in a while, the vampire swallows and lowers his gaze. Quietly, he says* Thank you. *a beat, then he adds* ... We can... We can make it better. *He looks up again, gaze tentative, insecure - he doesn't know if this is the right moment, but... Something is telling him to say it anyway.* We can go back to a normal life... Relatively. You don't have to give up everything. |

*the vampire is trying so hard. And while Gene appreciates it, at the same time, he knows it isn't true. Normality would be having Sam back. To not have to remember whenever the vampire says something too dark that it isn't Sam he's talking to. Without that, how can things go back to normal?* How... How can things go back? You... Sam... *Gene doesn't believe they could do this... But that's understandable. He's only ever seen vampires one way, before Sam was turned... So the vampire presses on carefully, trying to choose his words wisely.* And you helped Sam back into that job. ... You can do that too. Nobody would notice. *He doesn't want to say it out loud, but his words should be allusion enough - Morgan was DCI of a big, functioning police department, and no one ever suspected anything untoward. Not even Gene, beyond the natural aversion.* |

*The vampire can sense it, Gene's fear. It squeezes something within him, makes him feel uncomfortable. These are sensations he doesn't yet understand - things that usually, his human side would register and deal with. Normally, vampires would just disregard these things and not act on them, until they just disappear. But he can't just ignore it. Before he knows it, the vampire has reached out himself, laying a hand on Gene's shoulder and pulling him close. It's what Sam would have done, and in this moment, it just feels... right. Quietly, the vampire says what he's been repeating during those last few days.* You're not alone. I'll help. |

It's unprecedented, a vampire acting this way. It's almost as if there's still... Still a piece of Sam in there somewhere. Like if he just forced his mind to blank out, he could look at the face in front of him and see the person he so desperately wants to. Sam's face, Sam's eyes, Sam's soul... In a slightly choked voice, Gene whispers.* You... Vampires don't do this... |

As though he's looking for something. Something he desperately wants to be there. And his words, sounding as though they're drowning in emotions... A small, almost pained smile tugs at the vampire's lips. He thinks he can guess what Gene is looking for... Finding himself unable to take that small hope away from Gene, the vampire says, just as quietly* ... Maybe I'm just special. |

A wash of sadness overtakes Gene at that thought. And Sam's words... They're so... ... So Sam. Quietly and with a hint of sadness, Gene responds.* Yeah. And now Gene is leaning in, his eyes closing... He should have been able to easily anticipate what was going to happen, but the vampire's eyes still widen with surprise and shock as Gene's lips meet his. There is one moment where he doesn't, simply can't move, frozen in place, his mind unable to process this or decide on what to do. But his body knows. Remembers. The moment passes, and the vampire's eyes slide closed as well as he begins to return the kiss; shyly, carefully. As though anything more would scare Gene off.* |

*The vampire goes with it, almost automatically - whenever they did this before, there was no distinction between himself and his human counterpart, one in mind and body. Now, it almost... Almost feels the same. He feels Gene lean in, feels his own hand come up to grasp Gene's shoulder. This is happening. Gene is willing to be close again, to trust him, to... To accept him. And the moment his mind grasps that thought, fully comprehends it, something happens. A white-hot spear of agony pierces through him, from his head down. The vampire breaks away with a strangled gasp, letting go of Gene - curling in on himself as he shivers convulsively with the sudden onslaught of pain, one hand pressed against the scars down his face, the other clutching his chest above his dead heart.* |

Did he kill someone? Is this... Is this what it's like to be taken over...? But then the only other thing in the vast expanse of black takes his attention. That sound. Waves? *It's impossible to say how long Gene walks for. Nothing around him changes, the soft clacking sound of his heels against the ground swallowed up by the sheer emptiness. No smells, no air movement... Just blackness. Until suddenly, there's a loud splash, and Gene is stood in shallow water. He's reached the shoreline. The water is black, like everything else around it, but there's something about it that makes it easily distinguishable from the rest of the environment - it's not exactly light that's reflecting off its surface, but... Something is different. As though there's some kind of life hidden beneath, or maybe within the waves. And the way they're gently lapping at his legs, it's almost as though they're inviting him to walk further into the water... However, if Gene turns his head to his left, he'll see something that stands out even more. In the distance, changing in size as the water washes over it and retreats again, a swatch of something pale. Possibly a body. Possibly something else.* |

*Once again, Gene receives no answer. However, as he approaches, his suspicions are confirmed - it is indeed a body, lying face-down. Most of it is submerged in the water, the waves gently washing over its bare back, over pale shoulder blades. They don't quite reach the short, brown hair though. One arm is outstretched, as if to reach out for something, but its muscles are limp, lifeless. Save for the gentle rocking motion of the waves, it remains unmoving.* |

*Gene freezes as he reaches the body - from here, the figure in front of him is horrifyingly familiar. He'd know that short hair anywhere. The slope of those shoulders, the outstretched hand with those fingers he's held so many times. The body in front of him is Sam. An emotional pain shoots through Gene. He's already going through this loss, it's already hard enough. What cruel reality would show him this!? Sam, face down in the dark water, limp and lifeless... The sight almost brings Gene to his knees. In a broken whisper, Sam's name slips from Gene's lips. Slowly, he finds himself crouching, kneeling in the water next to his partner, a trembling hand extending to grab onto his cold shoulder, the other arm shifting underneath him in an attempt to roll him onto his back.* |

*Now that Gene is this close, he'll see that Sam's body isn't pristine. A ring of small, irregularly shaped holes circles his neck. The shoulder that was still mostly submerged in water remains drenched in black even as Gene moves him, and a moment later it becomes clear that it isn't water that's coating it, but blood (though by colour, the two remain near undistinguishable). There are holes, deep and wide, and it seems almost like a miracle that that arm hasn't been severed already. And then, as Gene turns him onto his back, Sam's face comes into view. His eyes are closed, features slack; a black substance dribbling from his lips in small rivulets. And half of his face is horribly burned. The cross shape is clearly visible, its outlines sharp. Blood is meandering from that eye, steadily welling up from behind Sam's closed eyelid. There is no doubt that, if Gene were to pull Sam out of the water completely, every single other wound Morgan inflicted on him would become visible as well. The water begins to wash over them with more intensity, pulling on Gene's clothes as it retreats and comes back - demanding, in a way. Almost as though it's trying to pull Sam back down into its depths...* Edited by Sam Tyler, Apr 18 2018, 01:02 PM.

And he looks... He looks dead.... With a whisper, Gene shakes the body in his arms.* Oi...Sammy Boy... C'mon, open those eyes for me, eh....? C'mon.... |

*Sam remains limp and heavy in Gene's arms, his skin cold and clammy. As Gene shifts him, Sam's head lolls to the side though, his forehead coming to rest close to Gene's chest, the motion exposing his neck, his jugular... ... And there. Only now that they're so close, Gene's enhanced senses will be able to pick it up. A pulse. Very faint, erratic, but unmistakably there. Fighting to keep going. *And once more, the pulse seems to be responding - a few beats come in a faster, more regular rhythm, as though trying to argue with Gene... But Sam's face remains unmoving, his body lifeless, save for the blood steadily trickling and dripping from his wounds. The waves become more insistent. There's a splash as one rises higher than the others, breaking only a few feet away from Gene and Sam, causing water to wash over them. The effect is strong enough for Sam's arm to be pulled into the direction of the open water as the wave retreats, and Gene will feel the tug of it as well as it tries to take Sam with it.* |

*Sam's body is heavy in Gene's arms, heavier than might be expected with his new vampiric strength. However, apart from that, there's no resistance - the water keeps lapping at them, but otherwise there is nothing that stops Gene from pulling Sam out entirely, and up the shore. As he does, Sam's lower body comes into view. For one, there's the stake, embedded in Sam's side. He's wearing trousers and his boots, but the fabric is ripped where the stake penetrated his thigh. Still no sign of life from Sam, other than that faint pulse, coming from somewhere within him. It hasn't wavered, and now that his body is out of the water and they're a little further away from the constant noise of it, Gene will be able to hear and feel it more clearly. And maybe, he'll notice how the sky around them, instead of being pure obsidian black, has become somewhat... Cloudy. As though there's a storm silently raging above them.* |

*As Gene speaks, Sam's pulse reacts. It's properly noticeable now, without the waves masking the sound - every time Gene speaks, the thrum within Sam strengthens slightly. And as Gene says his name - Tyler - there's an extra thump, as though answering a call. And pressed against Gene's chest as he is, Gene's voice rumbles through Sam, increasing the effect. At the same time, the clouds continue moving, the sky gradually seeming to brighten... And slowly, it's taking on a dark red tinge as the clouds draw together, as if beginning to form shapes... *It's as if Gene's voice is slowly pulling something out of Sam. The pulse becomes steadier, stronger... And at the same time, the clouds above them continue gathering, swirling, the sky gradually brightening into muddy shades of red and brown... Then, the first real thump - a sound so close to what a real heart would make. And at the same time, the clouds pull apart suddenly. It's as if the sky above and surrounding the pair has suddenly become a huge film canvas. Shadows, figures are moving across it - large masses, superimposed over Gene's and Sam's heads. Another beat of whatever it is that's beating within Sam, and the picture focuses. For a short moment, Gene will see himself, his expression one of pain and shock as he looks directly at what in a film would be the camera, before said camera seems to drop to the ground. Then, a red storm flits across the sky. The next image - no, the next silent film shows Morgan, staring with cold, cruel eyes. His lips are moving, but there is no sound forthcoming. He reaches out towards the viewer, and a moment later, the entire picture shakes... It's Sam's memories, Sam's point of view that's playing across the sky in this dark, barren landscape. Scenes play out in quick succession - Morgan bending over Gene, his teeth grazing the man's throat; Morgan coming closer, talking and talking, face twisting into cruel grimaces. And time and time again, Sam's vision wobbles, greys out, comes back, turns red... Once, it snaps to the side violently, a result of Morgan's punch. For a short moment, the view of the ground, fresh black blood spilling down. And every few seconds, Gene appears in the periphery, almost glowing... Then the crucifix, burning bright in Sam's Vision - bright enough for the entire Sky to turn white-hot for a moment. Once again, a stretch of red, nothing but crimson. And finallly... Gene's face, filling Sam's field of vision. His skin pale and bloodied, red and black streaks everywhere, the gag stained with it. His eyes fluttering... Sam's hand, shaking, comes into view, pulling down the gag... Fading green eyes gazing back at Sam... His lips moving soundlessly... Sam's vision blurring. Gene's eyes closing. His face suddenly surging very close - Sam is kissing him, thus transferring the blood. But as Sam retreats, Gene doesn't move again. And to Sam's vampiric vision, the way Gene's muscles relax completely, as the last dregs of his life leave him, is all too obvious. Gene is dead. The pictures begins to blur, to fracture. From the sides of the vast horizon, black cracks begin to appear, quickly moving in to break up the wobbling image of Gene's slack face. Finally, the sky goes dark - and lights up again. Gene's face once more, close up, pale and clammy, streaked with blood... The gag being removed... Gene's death replays. And again. And again. And again... And all this time, on the black ground, Sam remains motionless in Gene's arms.* Edited by Sam Tyler, May 28 2018, 09:18 AM.

*Gene watches as the sky ignites, mouth open and eyes wide in horror. The images playing, over and over.... Sam, the crucifix, his own gruesome death.... He can't move, rooted to the spot in absolute shock. Sam is held tightly in his arms, Gene's grip increasing as every scene changes, as every awful in mage flickers into the next. This is... This is hell... Face even paler than before, Gene watches speechless, every image like a knife in his undead heart.* |

*The images continue to repeat soundlessly, Sam's final memory illuminating the barren landscape. This is why the loud splash coming from the sea sounds even louder than it should. It doesn't fit with what's replaying endlessly in the sky. Accompanying the splash, a figure rears up from the black water. It staggers forward, out of the waves and onto the shore, where it stops to catch its breath. It's human sized and shaped, but even now that it's out of the water, the figure remains completely black, almost like a 3D silhouette, or shadow. There is only one discerning feature, visible now as the figure raises its head. Instead of eyes, two bright red lights now focus on Gene. The figure straightens and begins to walk towards the pair. As it comes closer, one last detail comes into view. A thin, golden, faintly glowing thread, clutched tightly in the figure's fist, and extending back into the black sea. And as the figure comes closer, the glow seems to be increasing in strength, beginning to pulse weakly. In Gene's arms, Sam's eyelids twitch. His head moves ever so slightly, turning further towards Gene.* |

*utterly stunned by the scene in front of him, Gene has to resist the urge to back up and away from the dark figure. Sam is still in his arms, and he's not going to leave him. So he watches, teeth gritted and protectiveness swelling within him as his body prepares to fight if it needs to. Voice gravelly, Gene hisses.* Wh-what are you? |

*The figure stops for a moment as Gene speaks, but then it continues approaching the pair. Finally, it comes to a halt, stood so close to them that they could have touched. This is when the figure - distinctly Sam-shaped - lowers its bright red gaze to look at Sam for a moment. Then it looks up again, focusing on Gene. For a moment, nothing moves - even the pictures in the sky seem frozen. Then, the figure extends its hand towards Gene, holding out the end of the golden thread for him to take. And, very faintly, a familiar voice echoes across the landscape. Help him.* |

*Gene should flinch backwards as the figure reaches out to him, waiting for him to take the glowing thread. But he doesn't. There's something familiar about the figure... And it takes a few moments for Gene to recognise it. The voice, the shape.... Even though the figure is completely black, those eyes... Jesus.... This is Sam's vampire....! Stunned and as if hypnotised, Gene slowly reaches out and takes the thread. There's an air of trust between then now, and the words it speaks - 'help him' - if this is going to help, he'll do it whatever it is.* |

*It's hard to tell what exactly makes the difference, but the figure's gaze softens as Gene reaches out. The thread's glow strengthens, and just before he touches it, Gene will sense warmth radiating off it... And then, his hand closes around the golden thread. For one moment, Gene will feel utter heat - but it doesn't superficially burn. Instead, it's as if it's going straight into his chest, into that space that was once occupied by a beating heart. It's a sensation Gene has felt before. It's the bond. And in that same moment, in Gene's arms, Sam opens his eyes. -- Like the flick of a switch, they're back in Gene's living room, Sam still cradled in his arms. No more than a second has passed since the vampire's collapse, but the situation couldn't be more different. The first thing Gene is likely to notice, is a tsunami of emotions, crashing through him. There are flashes of images as well, the same he saw in that hellish landscape: his own bloodied, pale face; his own death. The emotions, however, are Sam's. "Guilt" is too weak and simple a word to describe what's holding Sam in an iron grip. There's deep, nauseating horror; disgust; spikes of heartbroken denial; failure, utter self-loathing - and wrapped around all that, completing the toxic swirl, soul-crushing black despair. If Sam's body still needed air to be alive, he would be choking with the pressure of it all. In Gene's arms, Sam is tense, his muscles rigid. His eyes are wide open, leaking tears - the right one is still milky-white and blind. His left eye is brown. But he can't see, can't feel Gene's grip on him. His mind is caught in those final moments of Gene's human life, looping endlessly, hopelessly tangled in and bound by the accompanying emotions. Gene may have manage to re-establish the bond and bring back Sam's human side, but his work is far from done.* |

*The wave of emotions almost knocks Gene backwards. He blinks, back in his living room, clothes dry, everything just as it was, except... His whole body, mind and all feel like they're breaking down, crushed under the weight of Sam's emotions. Sam's... His left eye is brown. Gene can barely even begin to understand what just happened, but it's... It's turned Sam's eye brown, which means...!!! In a voice barely able to raise above a cracked whisper, Gene gasps.* ..... Sam...? *It can't be, but... His eye.... These memories, pounding down on him like a sledgehammer, over and over!* |

*Sam barely reacts, doesn't even seem to have registered the voice as Gene's. His chest hitches as a low keening sound makes it from the back of his throat past his lips, eyes still wide and overflowing, expression caught somewhere between horror and utter grief. His emotions, completely out of control, continue to pulse through the bond and over to Gene. The images, Sam's memories, they're enveloping Sam like a cocoon, blocking out all other sensations. But there is no doubt that this is Sam, now - Sam's consciousness, returned to his body. There is no sign of the vampire right now - small wonder, considering the force of the turmoil within Sam. But it's very clearly Sam's horror, Sam's regret, and Sam's grief.* |

*Gene's face turns even paler as he realises it's true. It's Sam. He has no blush to lose, but even so, he feels his nonexistant body temperature drop even further. Sam is here. It's impossible, but it's happened somehow...! And now that it has, there's no way Gene's going to let it go. Overwhelmed by the force of the horror pummelling him through the bond, he still can focus enough to know he can't screw this up. He has to get through to Sam somehow. Summoning all his strength, Gene pushes back against the onslaught, trying to make Sam feel his own relief - his terror that if Sam doesn't wake up properly, that relief will once again be snatched away from him. He tries to communicate his need, his love - everything he can think of to try and stir Sam.* |

*Sam's grief runs so deep, the horror and mortification so unbearably intense, that Gene's efforts don't even register with him. Over and over again, his hands come to rest against Gene's bloodless face, slick with human and vampire blood. Again and again he brokenly pleads for Gene to stay... and time after time, his bonded partner dies, by Sam's own hands. There is nothing stronger than that grief. However, it's a different story from Gene's side. Right now, through the bond, he's more or less trying to batter against a solid brick wall. Channeling his relief, his need, his love - it's no more than a hammer with a single nail, trying to bring that wall down. But if that hammer and nail were to keep working away at that wall... it would be very slow going, but with time and patience, that wall would begin to erode. One small hole can quickly become bigger... and bring down the whole structure. It's unclear where exactly this knowledge, or this conviction comes from - but it's there, offering itself up through the bond, ready for Gene to grasp and act on it. Use it to get Sam out of this hellscape he's trapped himself in.* |

*With Sam in this state and Gene too frightened of him leaving again, all he can do is hold Sam tightly and whisper to him. Stroke with his thumb, kiss at his forehead, his lips... It seems futile, but something makes Gene keep going, for the next hour and the next. He's rooted to the spot, unable to tear himself away. Because what if this is the plea that does it. That wakes Sam up out of this trance. What if it's this next kiss, this next whisper that does it? Gene himself is trapped in this now - he can't move. Not until Sam does. Not until he knows for sure that Sam isn't going to fade away in his arms... * |

*Hours pass by. Night becomes day. Sam doesn't know - doesn't consciously feel Gene's hands on him, the gentle caresses, the kisses; doesn't consciously hear the whispers. All he sees, hears and feels is Gene dying, dying, dying. But that doesn't mean that Gene's efforts are futile. Every word, every little touch, it trickles through the bond - unnoticed for now, but definitely there. Accumulating. Beginning to grow, like the first tiny spark slowly grows into a flame. The scene gradually becomes more muted. Colours begin to fade, sounds become distant. Sam doesn't really notice what's going on, completely focused on the lump of grief within him. Gene's lips move, whispering, his last words... Calling his name... The softest touch to his cheek, like butterfly's wing. More words, Gene's voice, but coming from further away... A warm, supportive sensation around his arm, like someone is holding him (Morgan is, right?)... Then, there's a small spark, like kindling. Something that feels very different to the dark coldness within him. There are soft flashes of emotions - love, relief, and again love... But how can it be? His partner is dead, Sam killed him... There shouldn't be space for any warmth, anything like these feelings, it's grotesque... Sam makes an effort, reaches out to touch Gene's cheek, they can't take him away, he can't let go of Gene...!! And then, slowly... Very slowly... The scenery around him changes. Becomes bright, first, then darkens slightly once more. Sam becomes aware of the fact that he appears to be mostly horizontal... Cradled in someone's arms... Strong arms, holding him close... And he can still hear Gene's voice, but how... How is it possible... What is...? Sam blinks. His good eye focuses. He sees... Gene's jumper. Sees the pale skin of his throat, his chin. Feels the soft press of cold lips against his forehead. Sam blinks again, tears continuing to fall. Whispers, his voice so broken that it's barely more than a wheeze* ... Gene...? *But even as he does, Sam's body has arrived at what his mind is struggling to comprehend. His arms reach up, shaking as his hands slowly claw into the fabric of Gene's jumper, clinging on weakly. The flashbacks have eased off, all but disappeared, but they've left Sam with crushing emotional pain, grief still holding him in a fierce grip. His mind will need a few more seconds to really catch up and arrive in the here and now...* |

*Gene's in a trance by now - his own vampire seems to beeaving him alone, thankfully, probably weirded out by the display of emotion going on. So he's left alone with Sam, clutched to his chest. And it feels like nothing will ever happen. Like Sam is going to stay in this catatonic state forever.... Just existing, not living. Its been too long now... Hours... And still the horror continues. The images still come. The grief. But then... That whisper... It can't have been... Gene blinks watery eyes, not trusting himself not to have dreamt that sound... Sam's good eye is staring up at him, a rich whisky brown. A small gasp escapes Gene, his own eyes widening. And in the exact same ragged whisper, Gene replies.* ...Sam..?? |

*Sam gazes back at Gene, his eye moving slowly as it searches Gene's face, takes in all the details - his face is still bloodless, skin so pale it's nearly white... but he's looking down at Sam, eyes wide and shimmering with tears... that's... that's different... Lips slightly parted, Sam remains silent as his mind slowly makes the connection. This... this right now is... after... ... somehow, Gene is... there... instinct tells Sam that he isn't quite the same, that something is missing, but... God.... God, Gene is here....!!! As the realisation hits, Sam's face begins to crumble, emotions beginning to crash through - relief, desperate relief, but also a fresh wave of deep sadness; he killed Gene, he knows this... So him being here now... it can only mean......... A broken whimper makes it past Sam's lips as he moves, slowly and stiffly reaching up and properly winding his arms around Gene, returning the embrace he's been held in for so long. And now, he's crying in earnest, quiet sobs shaking his frame as he presses his face against Gene's unmoving chest; all that sadness, the grief that had kept him submerged within his own consciousness for so long, is pouring out.* |

*Gene feels shell-shocked as Sam's face crumples, his arms winding round Gene's back. God... This is happening. Actually happening. Sam is back. Tears well in Gene's own eyes, his grip on Sam tight and vice-like, no intention to let go. Grief is pounding in his own chest - grief for what they both went through, relief for Sam's return, the two emotions warring with each other and churning like a storm. Shaking, Gene presses a clumsy kiss to the top of Sam's head and whispers.* S'alright... S'a-alright, Sammy... You're a tough bastard... You're alright... We're alright...! |

*Sensations flood Sam through the omnipresent grief. After being submerged in his own memories, the flashback, for what felt like an eternity, these new sensations are intense. The smell of Gene's shirt, his arms wound tightly around Sam's body... The little puffs of air through Sam's hair as Gene whispers; the sound of his voice, quiet but strong. Not dying. Not dead. Sam leans into Gene's embrace, as if he wants to just hide away in his arms, disappear into his partner's comforting presence. The kiss, so tender, so soft... And yet, Sam can't shake it. Something within him is holding back the memories, as if to try and spare him from the rush of horror once more, and though he has no recollection of the past week, he knows exactly what happened before. What lead to all of this. Pressed up against Gene, his eyes screwed shut and fingers clawing into Gene's shirt, Sam chokes out* M-m'sorry-- s-so so-sorry--! *For what he did, for what he put Gene through. For betraying him the way he did, first in killing, and then in turning him. No matter the circumstances, Sam puts the blame on himself. He should've been stronger. He should've... He should've resisted...!* |

*Gene feels his heart break all over again at Sam's broken apology. Through the bond he can feel everything - everything Sam's saying sorry for... But Sam was just as much a victim in this. He hates it still, of course - being a vampire is his absolute worst nightmare. But now that Sam's back it feels just that tiny bit more manageable than before. And God, that sliver of hope, that comfort, knowing Sam will be there.... It's all Gene can cling to right now. So he huffs an emotional laugh, clinging to Sam tight.* I know, Sam, I know...! *Now that Sam, with Gene's help, has finally broken out of his catatonic state, he's finally able to take in Gene's emotions as well, trickling in through the bond. And that sliver of hope that Gene feels... it's like a small spark of the sun, warming Sam from within, beginning to slowly melt that lump of despair and self-loathing. All he can do is nod, his face rubbing against the fabric of Gene's shirt. He never wanted things to turn out like this... Gene hates being the way he is now, and by God Sam can't blame him. If he could reverse it, if he could somehow save Gene, spare him from this fate, he would do it within the blink of an eye. However, once again, the gentle pulsing of the bond reminds Sam - as much as he's still trying to convince himself, this isn't all on him. It was Morgan who targeted them. Morgan who captured them, who made Gene watch as he... Sam shudders hard, drawing his legs up as if to curl up in Gene's arms as those particular memories rush at him again. His mind is struggling to hold against the onslaught... As horrific as Gene's fate was, and as much as the vampire was able to cope with it all, Sam hasn't had the chance to process what Morgan did to him. It paled in comparison to what Sam did to Gene, yes, but now... It's as if both traumatic events are trying to grapple for dominance, and it leaves Sam - still raw, only just resurfaced from his own subconscious - shaking and whimpering in Gene's arms, struggling once more to keep a grasp on himself.* |

He'd offer blood, but even thinking about that is too dangerous right now. The images in Sams head pound away at Gene's own mind again - the memories of Morgan, of what he did to Sam... His own helplessness to do anything about it... Of being used to hurt Sam more... Gently, Gene gives Sam a short shake. He needs to keep Sam in the here and now.* Oi... *It's less the shake and more Gene's voice that have an effect on Sam - that, and the bond. Gene's desire to keep Sam here, now, to make it all go away, to make it better... It feeds through to him like a warm, gentle rain. And every little droplet hits those memories, and slowly, ever so slowly, begins to dissolve them - or at least, this uppermost, most disturbing layer. And just as Sam is clinging to Gene for dear life, his mind finally properly latches onto the bond. The barrage of images becomes less powerful, less overwhelming, slowly replaced by a blanketing mix of relief, sadness, and the desire to never let go of Gene. And with it, the shivers begin to subside, Sam falling silent, though tears are still flowing, slowly seeping into Gene's shirt. But he's here. Right here, right now. He doesn't know how much time passes, but at some point, Sam finds his voice again, though it's cracked and barely recognisable as his as he whispers* .... Thank you... *For pulling me out... *Gene's sentiment is clear, even as he tries to mask some of his need - but Sam welcomes it, latches onto it. Gene needs him, even after everything Sam's done to him... He still wants him, he still.... He still loves Sam. Sam squeezes his eyes shut again, exhaling with a shudder. Feeling Gene, both physically and through the bond is like soothing balm for his aching soul, gently washing away the horrors of his own subconscious. And while Sam knows that he won't ever be able to entirely forget what happened, right now something other than complete grief and horror seems... Like a real possibility. Almost within reach. Sam doesn't move for a long time now, simply holding onto Gene, letting the bond soothe him. The sun is setting again by the time he stirs, finally pulling away ever so slightly, just enough to be able to look Gene in the eye. Sam's good eye is still brown, a little swollen from crying so much. And Gene's eyes... They're green... Through the bond, Sam finally makes the effort to actively reach out. Gene has changed - of course. The vampire is there, within him. And as Sam carefully explores that new sensation, something within him slowly begins to supply him with glimpses of the last few days: Gene's struggles, his hatred of his own vampire, his slow path away from overwhelming bloodlust. It feels as though all of that has left Gene separated within himself - and how could Sam blame him for that? Now that his mind is a little clearer, Sam slowly realises that he might be able to help Gene. He raises one hand, gently cupping Gene's cheek. His intention is probably already filtering through the bond, but he still says quietly* ... Let me speak to your vampire, please... |

*Sam blinks, slightly taken aback - but it's because he can sense the emotion behind Gene's refusal that he doesn't flinch back and withdraw. He's scared... Scared of what the vampire might do. Sam gathers himself, makes an effort to push against the guilt still looming at the back of his mind. He's asking something huge of his partner - a part of himself is trying to tell Sam that he has no right to ask for this much - but he knows it's necessary. Gene brought him back, pulled him out of the hell he was trapped in... It's time that Sam returns the favour. His voice even softer than before, Sam says* ... Trust me. *And as he says it, he carefully, ever so carefully reaches out through the bond, reaches out to that part of Gene that he's trying so hard to keep a lid on. Sam isn't trying to pull it out by force, not at all - instead, it's an offer of first contact. Sam is offering himself up for the vampire to examine, to explore.* |

*... Gene doesn't trust himself. That realisation is almost enough to undo the composure Sam has managed to pull together. It's such an alien sensation, and so wrong... ...but then, Sam can't blame Gene. Even after calming down and coming back to himself, Sam can't forget that... That Morgan managed to push him over that edge. But Gene brought him back. So Sam holds Gene's gaze and does his best to remain calm, and to keep the invitation extended. *Gene wants to believe Sam... Wants to believe in his confidence... But he's so very aware of the danger that lurks within him. The monster he wishes would disappear. The monster that'll take him over completely if he lets it out and it kills. But the vampire has a will of its own. And now that the disgusting display of emotion is over, it wants out. And no matter how hard Gene tries, he can't stop it. Gene's eyes flicker a muddy colour as he tries to hold the vampire back, but eventually his irises fill with startling bright red.* Well. Stopped acting like a limp rag, have we? |

*The change is happening, Sam can feel it - both the vampire's growing presence, and Gene's fear of himself as he's forced to retreat. So Sam concentrates, strengthening the bond as far as he can, sending Gene the message - it'll be okay. And then his eyes change, the colour going indefinable and muddy, and finally... Bright red. The vampire's words sound harsh, feel harsh on the surface... But there's something about the situation that takes away from their impact. For one, Sam and Gene are still embracing on the floor of Gene's living room, and it doesn't seem like the vampire is planning on letting go. And for another... Those words are so Gene. Of course he'd tell Sam off for acting "all Dorothy". Both Gene and his vampire think they're so different, so separate from each other... But they're more similar than they think. The thought makes a small smile flicker across Sam's lips as he holds the vampire's gaze.* Hello. *His voice is quiet, but that one word is enough to help Sam in letting the vampire feel the bond. Because like it or not, Gene's vampire is just as connected to Sam as Gene himself is, and the sooner it realises and accepts that, the better...!* |

*Gene's vampire frowns as he begins to feel it - the bond between them. This is new. This wasn't there before. And while it seems to give him a sense of completeness, of fullness, it's completely alien to anything he thought he could conceive. Trying resolutely to ignore it (this isn't Sam's vampire in front of him any more - he might be able to outwit this one) Gene lets go of Sam as though he's dropping an old tissue in the bin.* So you're the limp-wristed fleshbag who turned his vampire into a human-loving neuter. Proud of yourself, are you? |

*Luckily, Sam isn't completely alone with this. Contrary to what Gene's vampire thinks, Sam's vampiric side is right there; though Sam's good eye remains brown, there's no mistaking the presence on the other side of the bond, pulsing in the vampire's direction warning as if to say, Mind your manners. It's even becoming harder to distinguish between Sam's human and vampiric nature... Though Gene's vampire has let go, Sam doesn't. He catches himself with one hand on the ground, the other still cradling Gene's cheek, determined to make him feel the bond. He can tell that it's already begun to have an effect.* 'Grateful' is the word I'd use. *Sam doesn't break eye-contact with Gene, his gaze steady. He can't deny that the vampire's words dig at him, but he's determined to look past them and concentrate on what he knows is there in the background... Gene's consciousness. And Sam carefully opens the bond up further, lets his feelings for Gene - his love, his gratitude, the protectiveness - flow through.* |

*Gene's vampire feels another push. Another wave of... 'something'... Something pleasant. Something oddly comforting. And he can tell, it's Sam doing this. Somehow. Intrigued but not willing to let Sam know that yet, Gene raises an eyebrow and seats Sam's hand away from his cheek.* If you're feelin' half as blood-starved as I am, 'grateful' don't seem likely! |

*As much as Gene's vampire is trying to hide it, Sam can sense his curiousity. He isn't shying away from the bond, even though he doesn't seem to understand it yet. His words though... After everything that's happened, they spark fear within Sam. Not that Gene's vampire might try and overpower him to get out... But that he might attack Sam if he tells Gene he doesn't need blood anymore. But the next moment, Sam reminds himself that Gene is in there as well. And now, with the bond... Communication should be easier. So he takes a breath, withdraws his hand a bit, and says* ... No. I don't need blood. And I don't think you do either, if you really think about it. *Even though they're not physically connected anymore, Sam gives the vampire another nudge through the bond.* |

*'If you really think about it'? Out of stubbornness, Gene's vampire does his best to shut himself out of those thoughts. To not think about blood. Or how suddenly his grumbling stomach doesn't seem so urgent. The nudge further unravels him, and Gene has to force himself not to appear too interested in what's going on within him.* Don't tell me your vampire would rather chow down on some pretty piece of human tush than rip a throat out. S'not natural. What do you even run off of! |
