Well sequelitis seems to be going away. And good riddance. But how do you guys feel about this trend that is replacing them?Id especially love to hear thoughts of comic book fans, because Im not one myself.I have only movies and games to judge, and the situation there is kind of mixed right now. There were some decent reboots, and there were some really awful ones.Though I am mostly skeptical about it. |
| Souls?! Don't be ridiculous. It's their life forces that've been stolen. It's scientific! | |

So far the reboots have been of very good quality. I don't mind the trend for now, but I'm sure they will reach a point where it gets ridiculous. Such is the way of the industry. |

It can go too far, but someone in an Escapist thread pointed out that an Assassins Creed/God of War reboot would be a lot more enjoyable right now than another AC/GoW sequel and they're completely right. As far as games go, people suck at buying new IPs and if reboots are the way to have a FF style franchise where they try new things and reinvent everything every now and then, it's pretty cool. Reboots might be even better because you get to have some continuous storyline for a couple of games before moving on. We probably need a new name for it though, because reboot makes it sound like it's invalidating the old continuity. If you could shift the idea over to parallel continuity or spiritual successor it would lessen the hatred Less so for films because people actually get to see new films. I guess it reinvigorates interest in the old ones at least. Not a comic person so I can't judge that |

Is sequelitis going away? Are reboots becoming more prominent? I don't really pay too much attention to what's going on at the cutting edge of AAA releases because it's much cheaper to get things a couple years down the road, so it's entirely possible I just haven't picked up on the change in culture. My big concern would be that it's exactly that: a change in culture. The decision to reboot a franchise should be done based on the specifics of the franchise and with a good vision of what the developers would gain and lose by rebooting it, not because it's the popular thing to do right now. We've already seen examples of games that were clearly new IPs with an old name cynically attached to it for marketing purposes; I don't really want to see more of that. And I don't want to see good ideas abandoned because the publisher decided that a reboot would be a good way to boost sales. Still, there's nothing inherently wrong with a reboot, if you're careful about it. The Spoiler Warning consensus seems to be that Human Revolution would have been much better served as a reboot than as a prequel. I did always like the way Final Fantasy went about sequels. I wouldn't be at all sad if the new Star Wars movies removed the prequels from continuity. |

I'm not sure if I particularly mind new games with an old name cynically attached. I guess the downside is you're unlikely to see a sequel to the old game you wanted (although with XCOM it actually caused a new sequel to the old game to be created), but new games often don't sell. Maybe it's got better, but there are a lot of famous good new IPs in the past that didn't make the money they deserved and if this is whats needed to get people buying the awesome games then it seems fair enough |

When I saw the new Assassin's Creed trailer my first thought was that the series should be completely rebooted. Drop the ancient aliens conspiracy, drop the animus. Focus on assassinations and a more down-to-earth historical conspiracy. There are plenty os series that have grown, seemingly without any specific goal in mind, thus ending up cumbersome and messy. Pokémon is another one I think would benefit from a reboot, not that that'll happen. |
