The Basics

Welcome to forum role-play, this thread will give a comprehensive prelude to what you need to know before you begin forum role-playing; including all the ins & outs, including how to improve your forum role-playing. If you have any questions at any point, feel free to either reply to this thread or PM me (Ben).

  • What is forum role-play?

The Star Wars forum role-play is well known as a Play by Post (commonly shortened to PbP) role-play where everyone involved in the role-play creates and responds to stories in threads to further the overall story of the forum role-play. However, this does not mean in-client role-play specifically affects forum role-play, it's quite the opposite, major happenings that occur on the forum will evidently lead to affect in-client role-play, such as territory takeovers & raids, although, for any major in-client takeovers to be valid they must first be posted in their respective forum role-play board.

When forum role-playing you have several options on how to carry out your scene; in first person, third person... It is basically acting out a fragment of a film or play―in basic, you are giving a detailed version of your usual in-client role-play, as similar to the emote rule-set. A lot like an actor would, you would perfect your character's movements, accent, personality, etc... You will essentially become your character.

Writing the varying aspects of your character or faction with other players who also are writing their character, you work together to create a story. Each character's/faction's actions and individual histories come together and through each post your story develops. It also is the job of each player to not only write their character/faction, but also the environment and situation in which the characters/factions are in. In this sense, then, online role-playing could very well be more aptly defined as "collaborative creative writing".

  • Getting involved!

Before starting a topic the most key aspect is naming it, when naming a topic it should consist of the planet's name and also what type of thread it is such as construction, invasion, negotiation, ect... This will make it easier for other role-players to navigate the various threads for posts that concern themselves.

    • Example: Dathomir - Diplomacy
    • Example: Kuat - Construction
    • Example: Coruscant - Invasion

    • Construction: Construction threads are the ones that consist of building fleets & armies, defenses or even developing prototype weaponry, to create these it requires a minimum of two posts over 24 hours, however the larger the fleet/army or extravagant the prototype weaponry it would realistically take longer to create (also take into account the size of your faction) so try & use a bit of common sense. A good way to construct ships & armies is by explaining which planets you are using for each section of the fleet, army or prototype weapon you are making. It should also be noted, if you don't construct your fleets and armies, you will not have any forces to defend or attack with.

    • Spying & Sabotage: Spying & sabotage work in relatively similar ways, its more to do with using a small force to acquire or destroy intelligence/enemy opposition, as it is combat based it would require the initial posts to contain a list of the force involved followed by a 24 hour wait before a second post can be done, if no opposition responds to the post within 24 hours it is considered successful. Please note if a large army/fleet is sent to destroy an opposing factions base/fleet (once known) but not actually take over the planet, it is considered a sabotage thread.

    • Negotiations: There are two sides to negotiations, they can consist of anything ranging from alliances to trade rights to convincing planets to join your faction. The first type of negotiation is with other factions, this does not have a time limit however it does require a role-player from the faction to respond to the topic. The second type is with a planet not currently under a faction control, this requires a 24 hour wait between two posts for the negotiation to be successful, however during this 24 hour phase it is possible for other factions to attempt to negotiate for the planet themselves.

    • Invasions: Invasions require a detailed list of the attacking forces and three posts over 36 hours for them to be successful, however the defending faction is allowed to defend the planet from the attacking force and must state their defense force size. After this occurs refer below.

    • Combat: Combat in forum role-play works in a system known as Play by Post (PbP), this means that after one role-player makes a post, they must then wait until the other role-players that are part of the thread respond before making another post, if the opposing role-player does not respond to your post within 24 hours it is considered automatically successful, any back up forces on either side must make posts of arriving to the battle via hyperspace, the further the force is from the battle the more posts it requires to travel to the battle.

    • Destroying a planet: Destroying a planet &/or rendering it completely inhospitable with little to no chance of restoration requires an incredible amount of firepower; not something your standard fleet would have, such an act is a very rare occurrence and as such; you may find yourself being told no at the discretion of the staff depending on a multitude of factors that include but are not limited to:
      1. Your factions strength.
      2. Your ability as a role-player.
      3. How it fits in to current galactic story-line.

Destroying a planet &/or rendering it completely inhospitable with little to no chance of restoration requires consent through a community vote; to apply for such an event, contact a staff member who will post a thread up on your behalf so that it does not devolve into a popularity contest.
  • Content

What should a role-play post actually do? What things should you include in a role-play post? Well, after this tutorial, you will know. There are three basic elements that each role-play post should include. Three objectives, you could say. We will be looking at each of those in turn.

    • Reveal Your Character/Forces: Each of your posts should reveal some aspect of your character/forces. Whether it be their thoughts, personality, appearance, attire. Any revelation of developing traits or quirks, or maybe traits and quirks regressing and becoming less and less prominent. One mistake often made is revealing every little aspect of your character in the first post. What are you going to write about afterwards? An introduction post should be just that; an introduction to your character... Allowing the reader to know that your character exists. Subsequent posts can be used to reveal further aspects of your character.

    • Environment: The environment is an essential aspect to any role-play, and is constantly changing; it should be alive. The sun moves in the sky, for example, so if you have two characters sat in the sun, a few posts (an hour or so In Character time) later, they may well be sat in shade. Make mention of this fact. A person in a bar shifts off their chair to go to the bathroom, perhaps mention that. It is important to maintain a "real" feel to the environment. Also, atmosphere is an important part of the environment... Does going into the next dungeon hall, for example, mean a deathly silence that weighs heavy on the party? The environment is the world your readers are drawn into. If a city was made entire of still backdrops in a movie, with the main actors the only things moving, it wouldn't be watched by many people.

    • Plot: Last of all, you want to describe what you are doing/fleet or army is doing in that scenario, if you don't move the plot forward, then the thread will never end.

  • Stop & Think

There are two different banned methods of role-playing, these methods can be frowned upon for cheating or creating an advantage for your according character.

    • God-modding: The first mode that is common among those who are unfamiliar with play-by-post role-playing. It is known as god-modding. God-modding occurs whenever a player forces a hit on another player's character, or drives the plot to focus and center around their character. God-modding also occurs whenever a player takes control, or attempts to take control of another player's character without that character's consent. This is strictly forbidden within the forum role-play, no exceptions!

    • Power-modding: The second mode is similar to god-modding when it comes to character/ship/army focus, but relates more to the configuration of the character/ship/army, rather than the actions. When a player creates a nearly impossible-to-beat, or unrealistic character/ship/army they are power-modding. Power-modding also happens whenever the player applies so many special abilities, weapons, powers, etc. to a character that it seems they have a limitless arsenal to use during the role-play. Power-modding also occurs whenever a character has a power/ability/weapon that can destroy or control anything. A character possessing invulnerable armor is also a form of Power-modding; a lot like god-modding, this is also strictly forbidden within the forum role-play, no exceptions!

  • Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation

Spelling, grammar and punctuation are key aspects in forum role-play, they help other role-players to read and understand the story you are trying to get across to them, no one expects you to have amazing spelling, grammar and punctuation but a basic understand is very helpful. If you are unsure about your post, feel free to have a forum role-play mod take a look through it, they may even give you some pointers on how to improve.

  • Factions

This will give you a better understanding on how factions work; using these methods will increase a better chance of a successful faction.

    • Major factions are made up of minor factions, here are some brief examples:

    • Governments in the republic would be the minor faction, with the republic being the major faction.
    • Sith lords/dynasties/warlords who control various territories would be the minor factions, Sith empire would be the major faction.
    • Mandalorian clans would be minor faction, with Mandalorian Empire being the major faction.

  • How does this affect major factions?

As you take over planets in your minor faction, your minor faction gets bigger, as a result so does the major factions. Building fleets and armies to increase your minor faction size, means as a result the major factions fleet and army sizes increase, as long as you stay loyal to the major faction that is.

  • What if I don't want to align with those major factions?

No need to worry, you would be put down as an independent faction, and would be free to do as you please, you can still become a big faction regardless.

  • How would I become classed as a major faction?

Easily done, if you and someone leading another minor faction decide to form a coalition, and have a reasonable number of planets under your control, then you end up becoming part of a major faction, and should you ever decide to split off, then you wont loose any of the planets you worked hard to gain.

  • What is the advantage of being part of a major faction?

In character you would have access to more resources so you could build larger fleets and armies, also you would have friends and allies in the faction to back you up if needed.

  • Record of Fleets/Armies

A basic record of a factions fleets and armies is required in the faction's forum, minor factions that are part of a major faction (not including independent) may post their details in either the major faction's forum or their own subsection.
