I really don't follow football much. I watch some highlights but most of the names are unknown to me. I'm sure they are real people with real lives both on and off the field. I have a friend who every time we get together tells me about how Tebow is the greatest quarterback of all time. The reason, he lets me know, is because he is a committed believer. That is also the reason, he says, that there are those who do not consider him the greatest quarterback of all time. "They hate him because he is a committed believer." The quite natural (okay. we are assuming that sports obsession is natural. Bear with me, people.) criticism which comes up for a bad pass or fumble has now been transformed into persecution for his faith. I understand that Tebow is open about his faith. I also know that he is criticized for it, quite apart from any on-field performance as a quarterback. All that to wonder about the use of Christian Superstars!!! Even without the argument that people are fallible and today's superstar may fall tomorrow, it seems to me that the drive to "throw a hero up the pop charts" is not biblical Christianity. I question the value of a subjective and cultural phenomena as a litmus test's use as an apologetic for the faith. What do you say? |

I've heard people say that the cult of celebrity began in American Revivalist circles. I'm not so sure that can be borne out by history, but it certainly seems like the Christian Superstars have long been a feature of the faith in North America. Changing that would require a big change in the over all culture I think. |

Well, since God works primarily through the really boring and "ordinary" means of Word and Sacrament, and for most of Christian history, the faith was passed on to children of the faithful (again by word and sacrament), I would question the "effectiveness" of super-star apologetic. And then on the other hand you have those "bad" Christian celebrities who we like to keep in the closet because they've embarrassed us. Renee Russo is quite up-front with her Christian faith and people just loved her! Until she did a nude scene in the re-make of "The Thomas Crown Affair". Now we need to question her salvation. |

Tebow seems to be a good Christian guy. Not the best QB. That would be Brees or Rodgers at the present. I think the cult of personality is something to eschew. |

Rene Russo did a nude scene?!? Not sure I want to see that. I suspect she's pretty boney and has a lot of miles on her. |

I think she was in her 40s at the time. But yeah, she did a couple scenes in Thomas Crown. I had no idea she was a Christian. |

See? Backwards. Had she only gotten naked first, then announced her Christianity, she would be a Superstar! At least monthly on Focus on the Family to start. |
