I'm too lazy to search T for all related threads.
Neither do I wish to wade through so many weird responses as were probably given.
I'm simply asking what you believe Scripture teaches the soul is.
If you wish, please wade into tripartite vs dipartite being.

A Soul, I take it, is a Person: everything that makes up them. So living souls are people with their body, their mind, their memories, their approach of making new memories. A Disembodied Soul is just a person (with all that stuff that makes them a person) but released from a body.

Not having thought that much about this, I agree with Rey's summary. I accept the tripartite thing if only because of Hebrews 4:12 and the only answer I've heard from the dripartite people to that verse is just a bald statement that it doesn't belong in the debate.

I dunno about being off base. I was talking about the back and forth with Char taking it off course.
I think Rey and you are mostly on the right track.

I think Rey's hit it. I might quibble slightly over terms but he's smarter then me so I won't!

I take soul, mind, spirit, to be basically the same thing - a thinking subject and all that entails; the mind. In Genesis God fashioned a physical body, that could not think, then he breathed his spirit into the clay, and the combination made a living man. But before receiving the spirit, the physical brain could not think.

Moses was not permitted to enter the promised land and the Lord buried him... "but no man knows of his sepulchre unto this day". In the course of a century his brain/body decomposed. Nevertheless, Moses kept on thinking without body, for on the Mount of Transfiguration he held a theological conversation with Christ and Elijah.

Christ said to the thief on the cross, "Today you shall be with me in paradise." By sunset, the bodies of Jesus and the thief had been buried. They were dead. Their bodies were inoperative. Yet the two persons were enjoying paradise. No doubt the thief was praising God for his unanticipated salvation. That is to say, he was thinking, but not with his decomposing brains, but with his mind, soul, spirit. Whatever one wishes to call it.

Too bad. It was definitive, irrefutable, profound and edifying. But now I can't remember what I said.
Oh, well.
