In Sardinia abandoned Sulcis mines are attracting big number of visitors![]() Abandoned mines could be a new frontier of tourism. It’s the trend that has been emerging in Sardinia, in the Sulcis Iglesiente region, where visitors are flocking to visit the galleries that until twenty years ago were used to extract carbon from the mountains: in just six months, three sites have been visited by approximately 35,000 people. The area’s reconversion began almost silently twenty years ago and it has had to endure a long series of reclamation projects, some of which yet to be implemented, while tourism projects were slowly developed and put in place. The most visited sites are the Porto Flavia gallery, in the Masua mine, the Henry gallery in Buggerru and the Santa Barbara cave in the mine of San Giovanni in Iglesias. According to the area’s municipalities, ticket sales are going well. The tourist guides are provided by the Geo-mining Park Consortium, while the Igea -- the Sardinia region’s in-house mining company and the holder of mining concessions -- is in charge of safety, control and prevention. The number of visitors grew by 40% from last year. In six months, i.e. from Easter to September, visits to the Santa Barbara cave (a natural cave that can be reached after crossing by train a mining village and a gallery) and Porto Flavia (reachable by foot through a gallery that ends in an open space overlooking the sea in front of the Pan di Zucchero sea stack) stood at around 25,000, up from 18,000 last year. Proceeds stood at around €250,000. Attendance numbers were positive also for Buggerru, with more than 9,000 visitors to the Henry gallery in 67 days between March and August. According to industry professionals, “there is still room for growth.” Davide Madeddu http://www.italy24.ilsole24ore.com/art/business-and-economy/2016-11-09/in-sardinia-abandoned-sulcis-mines-are-attracting-big-number-of-visitors--131805.php?uuid=ADR7EKsB |
