La Pelosa Beach in Sardinia will have to make do with drip-drying this summer.

Locals have placed a ban on visitors bringing towels and beach bags to the stretch of sand in the town of Stintino.

According to The Local, the ban has been put in place because the beach has been losing sand at an alarming rate.

Mayor Antonio Diana has imposed the rule on the thousands of visitors who will visit the beach each day during the 2018 holiday season.

Instead of towels, tourists will instead have to rent folding chairs to relax on.

Next year, the beach will also have an elevated walkway over the sand, so that as little sand as possible is taken away on the feet of holidaymakers.

According to reports, there could also be security guards stationed at the beach to make sure everyone complies with the new rules.

This isn’t the first time Sardinia has got protective over its beaches.

Last summer, Sun Online Travel revealed that holidaymakers were being fined thousands of pounds for taking sand home from local beaches.

The Mediterranean island is famous for its beautiful quartz sand beaches at Mari Ermi, Is Arutas and Maimoni.
But islanders are fed up with tourists trying to take a piece of the beach home with them.

According to officials at Elmas airport in the capital of Cagliari, more than 5 tonnes of sand was seized from passengers during just three summer months in 2015.

As a result of the confiscations, the local government put in place a new law that said people caught trying to take sand home could be hit with fines of up to €3,000
