Juan Domingo Perón

Posted Image

Juan Domingo Perón (October 8, 1895 – July 1, 1974) was an Argentine military officer and politician. After serving in several government positions, including those of Minister of Labour and Vice President of the Republic, he was three times elected as President of Argentina although he managed to serve only one full term in this function. Perón's last term as President of the Republic began in 1973 and lasted for just nine months, until his death in 1974, whereupon he was succeeded by his third wife, the Vice President of the Republic, María Estela Martínez.
Perón and his second wife, Eva Duarte, were immensely popular among many Argentines. They are still considered icons by the Peronists. The Peróns' followers praised their efforts to eliminate poverty and to dignify labor, while their detractors considered them demagogues and dictators. The Peróns gave their name to the political movement known as Peronism, which in present-day Argentina is represented mainly by the Justicialist Party.

Childhood and youth

Perón was born in Lobos, Buenos Aires Province, on October 8, 1895. He was the son of Juana Sosa Toledo and Mario Tomás Perón. Juana Sosa was descended from indigenous Tehuelche from Patagonia in Argentina's south and his father, Mario Perón's forbears emigrated to Argentina from France, Scotland, and the Italian island of Sardinia; in later life Perón would publicly express his pride in his Sardinian roots. The Perón branch of his family originated in Sardinia, from which his great-grandfather emigrated in the 1830s. The latter became a successful shoe merchant in Buenos Aires, and Perón's grandfather was a prosperous physician; his death in 1889 left his widow nearly destitute, however, and Perón's father relocated to then-rural Lobos, where he administered an estancia and met his future wife. The couple had their two sons out of wedlock and married in 1901.
His father migrated to the Patagonia region that year, where he later purchased a sheep ranch. Perón himself was sent away in 1904 to a boarding school in Buenos Aires directed by his paternal grandmother, where he received a strict Catholic upbringing. His father's undertaking ultimately failed, and he died in Buenos Aires in 1928. The youth entered the National Military College in 1911 at age 16 and graduated in 1913. He excelled less in his studies than in athletics, particularly boxing and fencing.

Joseph William "Joe" Calzaghe, CBE, (born 23 March 1972) is a retired Welsh professional boxer.[1] He is a former WBO, IBF, WBC, WBA & The Ring Super Middleweight Champion and The Ring Light Heavyweight Champion.[2]
Calzaghe is the longest-reigning world champion in recent years, having held the WBO Super Middleweight title for over ten years and made 21 successful defenses. He relinquished the title to move up to light heavyweight. As his super middleweight and light heavyweight reigns overlapped, he retired with the longest continual time as world champion of any active fighter. He is part of the Team Calzaghe based at the Newbridge boxing club.
Between 2006 to 2008, he was rated by The Ring magazine as a top ten pound for pound boxer.[3] On January 2009, Calzaghe was ranked #3 in the world by The Ring.[4] He retired in February 2009 with an undefeated record and as a reigning World Champion.[5] Calzaghe is rated by Boxrec as the 11th pound-for-pound best British boxer of all time.[6]
Calzaghe is sometimes referred to as the "Pride of Wales," or the "Italian Dragon"[7] in reference to his mixed heritage (the dragon being both a Welsh emblem and a Sardinian myth).
In 2007, Calzaghe became BBC Sports Personality of the Year, by gaining 28.19% of the public vote.[8] This made Calzaghe the first Welsh winner of this award since show jumper David Broome in 1960. He was also awarded the Young Boxer of the Year Award in 1995.

Christopher Peter Meloni (born April 2, 1961)[1][2] is an American actor. He is best known for his television roles as NYPD Detective Elliot Stabler on the NBC police drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and as inmate Chris Keller on the HBO prison drama Oz. In June 2012, he returned to HBO, as the vampire Roman on True Blood.

Early life

Meloni was born in Washington, D.C., the youngest of three children of Cecile (née Chagnon), a homemaker, and Dr. Charles R. Meloni, an endocrinologist.[3][4][5] His maternal ancestry is French Canadian and his paternal ancestry is Sardinian (Italy). Meloni is a typical and widely diffused Sardinian surname.[6] He attended St. Stephen's School (now St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School) and the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he first studied acting, graduating with a degree in history in 1983. After graduation, Meloni went to New York where he continued his studies with Sanford Meisner at the famed Neighborhood Playhouse, as well as the Center for the Media Arts.

Acting career

Meloni worked as a construction worker prior to getting his acting break. He has also worked as a bouncer, bartender, and personal trainer. Meloni worked his way up the acting ladder with commercials,[7] short-lived TV series, and bit parts in a number of films. His first noticeable role was as the hotheaded son of a Mafia Don in the 1996 thriller Bound. He also appeared as Robbie Sinclair's friend Spike in Dinosaurs and Julia Roberts' fiance in Runaway Bride.
[edit]Oz, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit
From 1998 to 2003, Meloni portrayed the bisexual criminal Chris Keller on the HBO series Oz.
Law & Order producer Dick Wolf signed Meloni to play Elliot Stabler on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in 1999; until Oz went off the air in 2003, Meloni appeared on both Oz and Law & Order: SVU simultaneously. In 2006 Meloni was nominated for an Emmy Award,[8] in the category of Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, for his role as Elliot Stabler.
In May 2011, Meloni announced that he would not be returning to SVU in fall 2011 for its 13th season after the failure of negotiations over a new contract.[9] Meloni stated he would consider guest starring on SVU in the 14th season. "I'm always willing to consider. I had 12 great years on the show. I loved the people and I loved that character," Meloni said at San Diego Comic-Con International on July 14, 2012, "There’s no bad blood there. We’ll just see when it comes. It’s still doing OK, I guess."[10]

Other work

He returned to his comedic roots when he portrayed the character "Gene" in Wet Hot American Summer in 2001, the puppet-loving pediatrician Dr. Norris in a 2003 episode of Scrubs, and the character of "Freakshow" (albeit in heavy make-up) in the 2004 comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. He would make another cameo in its sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, as "The Grand Wizard". In 2005, he appeared on episode 107 of MTV2's adult puppet show Wonder Showzen in a series of parody PSAs warning of the threat of cooties. He also had an uncredited role as a gay hotel desk clerk in Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas.
In July 2009, Meloni portrayed renowned DC Comics character Hal Jordan/Green Lantern in the DC Universe Animated Original Movie Green Lantern: First Flight. He briefly appeared in the first episode of the Comedy Central series Michael & Michael Have Issues portraying himself for a fake movie starring Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter.
On June 24, 2011, it was announced that Meloni is in negotiations to play a "major role" in the Superman reboot Man of Steel.[11]
On November 30, 2011 it was announced that Meloni is in talks with HBO bosses to take on a 'major role' in the fifth season of True Blood as an 'incredibly powerful' vampire.[12] It was later confirmed that he would be taking a role as a series regular for season 5 as Roman, an "ancient, powerful vampire who holds the fate of Bill and Eric in his hands." [13] He'll also be starring in the upcoming film They Came Together[14].

Public appearances

Meloni has appeared in many public service announcements in support of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues.[15] In 1999, Meloni jokingly kissed Lee Tergesen (who played Tobias Beecher, Meloni's on-screen boyfriend on Oz) at an awards dinner for GLAAD. In 2006, Meloni was given the Human Rights Campaign's Equality Award, along with actor Jake Gyllenhaal and director Ang Lee, for his work on behalf of GLBT issues.[15]
In 2004 and 2006 respectively, Meloni competed in both the fourth and the eighth series of Bravo's Celebrity Poker Showdown; in the eighth series he finished in second place, behind Robin Tunney, and ahead of Macy Gray, Joy Behar, and Andy Dick. He played for Feed the Children.
He also appeared on Celebrity Jeopardy! on November 10, 2006, defeating fellow Law & Order stars Sam Waterston and Kathryn Erbe. Meloni split his $50,000 charity prize between the Big Apple Circus Clown Care Program and the Montefiore Advocacy Center.
Meloni was included in the 2006 edition of People magazine's Sexiest Men Alive.

Personal life

Meloni is married to production designer (Doris) Sherman Meloni (née Williams) and they have two children, daughter Sophia Eva Meloni (b. March 23, 2000), and son Dante Meloni (b. January 2, 2004).[16]
He has a Cubist-inspired representation of the crucifixion of Christ tattoo on his upper left arm, as well as a butterfly tattoo on his left upper thigh and a Chinese astrological chart of his family on his right lower leg.[17]
Meloni has been a longtime gay rights supporter and in 2011, he joined the Human Rights Campaign's "New Yorkers for Marriage Equality" campaign.[18]
Meloni currently resides in New Canaan, Connecticut.[19]

Jean-Paul Marat

Posted Image

Jean-Paul Marat (French: [ʒɑ̃pɔl maʁa]; 24 May 1743 – 13 July 1793), born in the Principality of Neuchâtel, was a physician, political theorist, and scientist best known for his career in France as a radical journalist and politician during the French Revolution. His journalism was renowned for its fiery character and uncompromising stance toward "enemies of the revolution" and basic reforms for the poorest members of society.

Marat was one of the more extreme voices of the French Revolution, and he became a vigorous defender of the sans-culottes; he broadcasted his views through impassioned public speaking, essay writing, and newspaper journalism, which carried his message throughout France. Marat's radical denunciations of counter-revolutionaries supported much of the violence that occurred during the wartime phases of the French Revolution, and his constant persecution of "enemies of the people", consistent condemnatory message, and uncanny prophetic powers brought him the trust of the populace and made him their unofficial link to the radical Jacobin group that came to power in June 1793.

Marat was murdered in his bathtub by Charlotte Corday, a Girondist sympathizer.

Jean-Paul Marat was born in Boudry in the Prussian Principality of Neuchâtel, now part of Switzerland, on 24 May 1743. He was the second of nine children born to Jean Mara (Giovanni Mara), a native of Cagliari, Sardinia, and Louise Cabrol, a French Huguenot from Castres. His father was a Mercedarian "commendator" and religious refugee who converted to Calvinism in Geneva.

In 2010, he debuted as a stage actor in Face au paradis, a French play directed by his wife, Rachida Brakni.[2]

Barbara Serra

Barbara Serra (born 19 August 1974 in Milan) is an Italian-born British-based journalist and TV newsreader, who presents from London on Al Jazeera.

Born in Milan to Italian parents (father from Sardinia, mother from Calabria), Serra was raised in Copenhagen from the age of nine. As a result, she is multi-lingual, with a native language of Italian, secondary languages of English and Danish, and is fluent in French.

In 1993, she moved to the UK to read International Relations at the London School of Economics, and then trained as a journalist via a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism at City University, London.

Serra's journalistic career started at the BBC, where she worked her way up from a researcher, spending three years working as a producer/presenter for BBC London News, produced on Radio 4's Today programme and regularly presented EuroNews on BBC Radio Five Live. Her most challenging on-air moment was having to improvise a 5 minute radio bulletin without any scripts due to a technical mishap.

In 2003, she joined Sky News as a reporter, working on both domestic and international assignments. Serra covered a wide range of stories, from the death of Pope John Paul II in Rome, to the Michael Jackson trial in California.

In July 2005, as part of a Sky News deal to deliver Five News, she became presenter of the evening News on four nights on Five.

Serra left Five News in April 2006, when it was announced that she had joined Al Jazeera English as one of its London-based news presenters.[1] She reports on news events from across Europe, and presents the programme People & Power and presented Streetfood Palermo.

In September 2007 she started co-presenting on Italian state TV RAI, on a weekly programme called TV Talk from the Al Jazeera studios in London.
