I write for people who are able to understand what I write, not for those who are unable to understand what I write. |

It actually takes a lot to come to a realization like the above, as simple and straight forward as it appears to be. There were quite some time, where I would always - subconsciously - write stuff as if the recipient didn't know anything about said stuff, and then - through my writing - try to explain it to him. Why would you do something like that? Well, I don't know: Everybody has to learn stuff on their own, and there's no possible way to transplant whatever knowledge you have unto somebody else's understanding. Either they get it, or they don't. So the question becomes: What do you actually gain something from reading, yourself? What do you really enjoy? Reading the words of someone, who is confident with his own experience, and understanding, and doesn't feel the need to explain everything, to make others understand? Or do you like someone, who excels in persuasion? (And isn't an explanation always an attempt to persuade, in some way or the other?) It all depends on, who you are, yourself? Someone who seeks understanding? Or someone who seeks to persuade others to acknowledge you as someone having understanding? |

I got so used to having to explain myself that it became quite automatic, for a while. Now there's so little to explain. I find myself explaining very little, nowadays. Still, I only ever seem to explain myself. I've noticed this trend amongst many people: the drive to be recognised as a communicator. This requires that one communicates. This requires that there be others with whom one communicates. This requires that one communicates what others want to receive. This leads to one producing words, music, art, whatever it is, that people are already comfortable with, that they already know they like, and that they profess to want more of. Evolutionary cul-de-sac, there. We'd be better off clamming up if we're only going to rearticulate the past! |
