A little known secret of life is, on the face of it, rather obvious. But the obvious is the very thing most likely to go unnoticed... Having come to the internet rather late in my life, getting on for 50 years old, my perspective on it is substantially different to, say, a teenager who has always had access to it. This is how I come to notice what I notice about the majority of internet users. Most people post, reply, comment, to get something from whatever medium they are using. What they want to get may be many different things, but in most cases, it is the wanting something that forms a common thread. They will give back as little as possible, usually nothing at all. Except heaps and heaps of gratuitous abuse. You'll have noticed this. I kept running into a problem that I had no way of understanding, until the coin finally dropped. People assumed, as a given, that anything I said, I said only to make myself 'look good'. No matter what I said, or how I said it, it would be met with scorn, derision, rudeness. I was at a complete loss. Then, through a series of insights, I arrived at a truth: People only know what they know. If they don't know something, any context that accompanies what they don't know, simply doesn't apply. Moreover, it can not be explained to them. Because wherever anybody is, on their evolutionary arc, that is exactly where they are. What this means, is that any concept with which they are unfamiliar, effectively doesn't exist for them. Especially when you factor in 'equality', meaning to the less equal, that you couldn't possibly know anything that they don't. So what I was encountering was a scenario where it was automatically assumed that - like them - I was only out to 'get', and that was my sole reason for posting anything. To make myself look good. And we couldn't have that, could we? Fact is, I mostly post whatever I post, to give. There's nothing I need to get. If there is, I will get-it as soon as I register that it is unknown to me. And this is the interesting point: When I encounter anything I don't know about, my ears go up, and I listen. Apparently, when others run into anything they don't know about, they immediately categorize it as 'bullshit'. It happens far too often to be an anomaly. It is a state of mind, and one I no longer have any ability to relate-to, or understand. Nor you, probably, or you would not be on this site, reading this. Our site is expressly for people who are interested in, and by, things they do not yet know. And for those very few who know things generally unknown, who are disposed to share those things, so that others may also know. So, if you are open, interested, possessed of either/or sufficient humility to admit you might not yet know it all, then you are most definitely in the right place. As are those who, advanced as they are, have important knowledge and/or insight to share, thereby adding it to the general pool of what humans know. Good to see you! |

It is especially good to see you, because you may be able to do what I can not. It is not for me to save civilization from itself, even though what I have learned has the potential to do exactly that. No; I am the wrong unit for the job. My function is to seed the ground, and then retire to await the possibility of a future yield. It is not for me to save humans from themselves. Maybe that particular function is for you. |
