Due to ongoing vandal-attack, no new members are currently being accepted.
If this affects you, and you are not a vandal, please be patient, and be understanding.
There's plenty to read, anyway.

Any change in board status will be announced on this thread.

I have taken the bold move of hiring a gunslinger to moderate our forum, before it devolves into a clone of every other forum.
I know him well enough to entrust him with this, and if anybody thought I was rough, you ain't seen nothin' yet.
He will take no crap, period.
That said, he is a pleasant fellow, and is both discerning, and fair.
As his name suggests, he has a clear and empty mind.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Simpleton!
Your new Global Mod.

Thank you for the introduction. I may not say much, but be sure, I am nearly omnipresent, save for when I have to take care of animals.

They need my attention. Humans typically seem to need only reprimanding.

You might want to post an avatar image, Senor.
Lee Van Cleef, Jack Palance, or some such psycho :)
Unless, of course, you're actually an easygoing animal-lover...
Nobody really knows anything about anybody, on the internet.
Unless...

By intuition!

Ahh so Simpleton is a current members alt account?
The line about intuition suggests it might be Racer Poet, but he doesn't talk much about animals...
Soren is already a mod, and a family man probably has scarce little spare time.
Who could it be... more clues are required to get to the bottom of this mystery :-D

Doesn't matter who he is, as much as what he does.
And it matters even more what he doesn't do.
A paradox on a site like ours.
Not easy, being a moderator.
Not easy getting it right, anyway.

Latest Posts subforum is now visible only to established members and adepts.
This to hide counterproductive posts from visitors who have yet to establish what goes on here.
Presenting a unified, and accurate, front, is the aim.

I may or may not be absent for a day or two, while my computer room gets blitzed to maybe decrease the dust and allergens that wreak havoc with my health.
It's going well, so far, but now I have to disconnect and dismantle everything to move furniture around and do a major cleanup.

Back soon :)

Four days later, here I am again. We had no power, no phone, and no internet.
Fortunately, a week or so ago, I bought a new generator, and what a fortuitous move that turned out to be.
I got a chance to shake out the bugs and tweak it for max output, for real.

A tugboat driver, so I hear, towing a crane barge, took out the main distribution hub for electrical services, one island over, and made a huge mess of everything. Probably drunk, along with irresponsible, as is so often the case around here.

I got to build a generator shack, during this downtime, that serves two other functions, and looks great, too.
Time well spent. I'll post pictures when it's done. Did some trick cement work, even :)

Thanks to you fellows who were worried. Not that it helps anything, but still it's nice to know.
Good times and bad times. Now it's all back to normal.

Aren't generators a wonderful thing? Power backup for the house and power for tools around the property. As the climate madness grows and has gained a life of its own regardless of how many questions are thrown at it, we are moving to a world where reliable power will be a thing of the past.

We had the whole of one state (South Australia) completely without power at a cost of billions. It has the largest amount of wind farms in the world per head of pop. The battlegrounds have started with the state politicians claiming it had nothing to do with wind power yet nobody with any engineering background knows what happened.

I am looking forward to a time where every house is it's own power station. I have in mind a matchbox size nuclear generator. Although nuclear is making a comeback I suspect it will not be in my trip on this planet!

Not all generators are created equal, much like humans, and anything else. I finally have a decent one.
We may yet live to see hydrogen fuel cells powering households. That'd be good.
Meanwhile, it's complexity, noise, pollution, and considerable expenditure.

Nice when it all works right, though :)

That was a very long two-day forum outage.
Zetaboards suffered a major meltdown, affecting several servers and many forums.
Ours, as usual, was the last server to be rebuilt.

Welcome back!

Good to be back, did all the data come back up? How can you tell?

I am always wary when IT people tell me "we have allowed for this exact situation' 90% of the time they don't have a clue or at best have ideas but have never tested them until reality hits them!

Ah! don't you love the smell of BS in the morning?

Now, now; let's not be cynical.
As far as I know, all the data came back, but how would I know without trolling through thousands of posts?
Feel free to do so if you're so inclined :)

There is an air of the cynic in your reply.

I have about 6 pages of quotes. Is that enough to get you back up if it turns to ****.

Sorry if it sounds a little critical - 25 years in the IT industry does that to you.

Actually, I decided that it doesn't matter one bit if this whole site disappears forever.
I wrote what I wrote, as did others, in the moment it was written, so the deed is done, responsibility manifested.
It will remain forever, writ-down in that moment.
All anybody has to do is to also exist in that moment, and so it is up to them to do so.

How's that for advanced metaphysics?

Crow hears from Soren, who seems to be doing well, with baby number two approaching earth-orbit.
One may reasonably expect him to suddenly re-appear, here, shortly.
Something to look forward to :)

Your sentiments are answered. Soren is back, for as long as he's back; make the most of it :)

And on another note:
Wyvern demonstrates his Adepthood, so in spite of his lack of posts, joins our other Adepts in what may be the world's smallest and most exclusive elite.
Welcome, Wyvern. Well done!

I'm not sure if I deserve to be an Adept, I've always felt like an eternal idiot since I discovered that each human is an unconscious bearer of one or more Dunning-Kruger rings, but thank you.

You question my judgment? Members have been exiled for less than that :)
On the other hand, as your 13th. post, it is entirely acceptable.

Ironically, it is always the most deserving that feel themselves to be undeserving.
Dunning-Kruger, writ large, for those with eyes to see.

The Reputation System is reinstated, with updated code, and seems to remember its state when it was previously disabled.
You can, once again, communicate your appreciation, or distaste, for what you read here.
Go easy on the distaste, though, lest it bite your own ankles when you're not looking.

* It may not yet work on every board theme; I'm working on that.
It does work on the default Basic Moss Green, though.
Let me know if you run into any problems.

** Reputation does NOT work on 'Warthorn' theme, for unknown reasons.
Every other theme is fine.

Based upon what I have so far seen, on this forum, and another, Sauve Qui Peut is awarded Adept status.
This is a considerable jumping of the gun, but intuition informs me.
It's generally accurate.

Welcome SQP, to Adepthood. You can post anywhere now.
