The Ten Commandments contain a point so important that it was duplicated, or enlarged-upon: Thou shalt have no other gods before me. And: Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. It is commanded that before there is anything else, there is God. God must always precede. And then it is commanded, further, that no form of idol must be substituted for God. What is ego if not an idol? What is intellect? What is this thing people have inside them that believes it is always right, must be right, can never be wrong? What is it in men, that causes them to reject anything they do not first 'agree with'? Humans each set themselves up as God, differing only in how much trouble they go to to give the impression, to others, that they don't do this. There is no greater idol, nor any more insidious, than oneself. It is identity that makes this so. A label one stands for, and that stands for one, that one may stand separate from all else, and be known as separate. It is a point of pride, making a virtue of separation and disconnectedness. This is why idols are so vehemently counseled against in The Commandments. Idols can be made not only of gold, but also of excrement. And this is why our members are encouraged to adopt a creature as their identity, here, a totem, to minimize their identification as a separate human. Because few things one might do, in the quest for consciousness, are quite as useful as the deliberate minimizing of one's human identity. Edited by crow, May 8 2016, 04:49 PM.
