One of the most likable people I know, works as a receptionist/secretary for the local real-estate operation.
Yesterday, when I paid her a visit, she appeared to be training a new woman for the same role.
I was introduced to this new person, who - apparently - is also a 'yoga teacher'.
Aha! Somebody interested in spirituality, I reasoned...

We had a pleasant enough conversation, for a while, when I observed:
"People rarely take me to be spiritually-inclined. I do it all wrong. They expect spiritually-inclined people to be very different from me."
"In what way?" she asked.
"Oh, you know," I said. "White robes, neatly-trimmed beard, dreamy eyes, pasted-on smile, profound-sounding comments. That sort of thing. I am none of those things."

She responded with one word...
"Yet".

I don't remember ever encountering a better example of how one word can change the future.
It told me all I needed to know about her.
What does it tell you?

Not interested in spirituality. She was aspiring to have what she thinks is the appearance of being spiritual.

I suspect most, in fact nearly all, of those interested in spirituality don't even know there is anything beyond the appearance of it.
It's truly remarkable how so many people stop at acting-out whatever they don't realize that they could so easily be.

It's a simple, and subtle, perspective-shift, that escapes almost the entire population.

I suspect her "Yet" was a better answer than - nothing - which is the most common reply to that sort of statement. I also think she has something about her that is worth an investigation.

I am struggling with your sentence "It's truly remarkable how so many people stop at acting-out whatever they don't realize that they could so easily be." please explain?

New-age spiritual types - as an example - or at least all of them that I have ever met, are about as spiritual as a comic book guru. They look the part, speak the part, smile the part, even move the part, yet have no trace of actual spirituality about them.
Because, they simply do not realize that spirituality is about being spiritual, rather than simply giving others the impression that that is what they are.

That's as clear as I can make it.

In the late 90's I was at the School of Philosophy and a guy joined our class. He was 'it' from the canvas shoes to the, skinny body + long hair and was about 45. He spoke in glowing terms about Buddha but had no idea what he actually taught!

The bottom line came when one of the members bought some new age stuff from him and got ripped off and when asking for a refund he just laughed at her and told her to 'grow up'.

Social validation seems to be a big thing for most self-declared 'spiritual' types. This is the point, that they are missing. You cannot be spiritual if you invest too much in the appearance of being spiritual, for the spiritual man is one who discards appearances in favor of the real thing, and he does this because he knows that the value of the real thing by far exceeds that of being perceived as spiritual by other people.

Therefore people rarely recognize the spiritual man. It doesn't matter, though - because the spiritual man is recognized by God, and that is all he truly needs.

The spiritual man recognizes the most unrecognizable thing of all: himself.

Nice to see you Soren :)
