In an age where practically everybody falls far short of behaving in even a marginally civilized fashion, I find myself making much of anybody who displays even token redeeming features, as if such minor attributes are wondrous things. I suppose they are wondrous things, in a time when things are so far gone from what they were within my lifetime. I chanced to meet the cook who had prepared the clam chowder that resulted in my recent bout of food-poisoning, and when I mentioned it to him, was impressed by the way in which he responded to it. That is to say, he didn't immediately become defensive, and offered me a free meal to compensate. I declined to take him up on the offer, but remained impressed with his attitude. That's the way to do it. Of course, the real way to do it is to not poison anybody in the first place. But even token gestures are better than none. I do this a lot. Small things mean a lot to me, when most people can't even manage to come up with even that much. The whole phenomenon amuses me. It's a sort of cultural adaptability, in action. Making the best of a bad deal. Edited by crow, Aug 10 2016, 12:56 PM.

You can be very generous with people. You're the master of it, along with being the master of the obvious. |
