A comment by Water... "Silencing the mind completely feels impossible. Not saying this from frustration. Ego has its eyes, pervades everything. What a task to step back, discard them entirely and be free of their/its strictures. What looks out when 'you' aren't there. What fills the mind when it is empty." People often refer to things as 'impossible' when they find themselves unable to do them, or even imagine being able to do them. It serves more to leave such things alone, pending discovery of means as yet unclear. Yes, ego is a megalomaniac, pervading everything it can commandeer; even your identity. You allow it to do this by having an identity. It is exceedingly difficult, to displace ego from its fortified castle, and is best not undertaken by frontal assault. By subtle means is the portcullis raised, and entry gained. Nothing looks out when 'you' are no longer looking out. There is no 'out', there are no eyes, there is no 'you'. Suddenly you discover there is, after all, no castle. Nothing fills the mind when the mind is empty. It is simply empty. It is a tool, not a beast of burden. It works as intended, when it is not overloaded. Lean, mean, ready. It is identity that gives rise to every other problem. Setting identity aside, is the solution. |

Paraphrasing SorenL: "Even while seeking to extinguish the ego, I was a somebody desiring to be nothing. Now the identity, somebody, is gone, now I simply want to be" Perhaps it is best to just concentrate on the meditation, on the breath. Quieting the mind can't be done, but not-done. |

It's a lot like overcoming a lifelong stutter: almost impossible to describe, but... Control was the very thing that made me stutter. Obsessive control, leading to over-control. Releasing any and all control, a phantom, stepping back from the act. Stepping back, and out. Hands-off, thoughts-off, mind-off. Everything... Off. The body and mind do a far better job of running themselves, than some idiot who doesn't even exist. Edited by crow, Aug 29 2016, 09:20 PM.
