I wonder if it ever occurred to anyone that the accelerating demise of society is due to most of its individuals being depressed? When you take a look at the numbers of people actively consuming anti-depressants, it's really very alarming. Then, being depressed, people consume more alcohol and drugs, seeking some feel-good. So why not legalize marijuana, too, as is happening right now, in Canada, to really throw a spanner in the works? Can you imagine? Like things aren't bad enough already. Soon there'll be drivers who are both drunk and drugged. Air Traffic Controllers. Pilots. Train Drivers. Taxi Drivers. Cops. Judges. Doctors... Once a house of cards starts to topple, it goes very fast, and nothing can stop it. It starts with people allowing themselves to get depressed in the first place, and it's all downhill from there. Jealously guard your mental health; once it's gone, it's gone. This has been a Public Service Announcement, brought to you by crow. Edited by crow, Sep 12 2016, 08:47 PM.

Yes I had this thought the other day in fact. I was thinking about my own depression for a bit and then realized, wait a second, do I personally know a single person who isn't depressed? It was very difficult to come up with even one. This is how I know society is a deeply sick place. Then you think about all the money in drugs and treating mental illness... After years of sobriety I have given up because you're right once it's gone and it's gone. And trying to be sane among the insane is not worth the effort. Edited by crow, Sep 13 2016, 10:59 AM.

Sounds like you're in a rut. Drugs and alcohol aren't the solution. Time to try something different. Meditation will help. I had depression in the past and, although I knew meditation was part of the solution I couldn't muster the wherewithal to do it. I just kept taking the easy option; more wine and more pot. The easy option leads to trouble and sadness. There's no magic solution that makes everything easy, grinding away trying to do the difficult thing over and over makes it easier. Anyway I'm a neophyte to this stuff and I don't know you, your situation or the specifics of how to improve it, but I'm sure you can figure out how to. You're at the right place to do it. |

It's no effort once you manage it. All the effort goes away; it's recovering sanity, once it's lost, that is exceedingly difficult. |

Sanity and happiness I put in two boxes. Sanity can be lost and it is hard (if ever) to get it back again, after the world warps under you then unwarping takes a lot of work. Happiness, on the other hand, is easy-peasy all you have to do is sit down and meditate, after a while there will be a quiet happiness arising in you. It shows in finding yourself humming a tune or smiling to yourself about something silly you did. As I say to anyone complaining about being unhappy "You are Responsible for your OWN happiness" nobody else can give it to you, not a partner, relative or friend. Just you! Likewise, you are responsible if you lose your happiness as well. I drink red wine regularly and enjoy it immensely. Staying totally sober is as bad for me as becoming a drunk. It is a part of the great game I play with life. Edited by Ardy, Sep 13 2016, 03:41 PM.

Depression / demise feed each other. "Sold mah soul to the devilll" I wonder if the soul of today's joe average is even tradeable, seems all too easy to write it off before one remembers its value. |

Flint Ring: The damage done by the ego is immense and the richer we become the more it seems to take over. Fat people = everywhere. Hysterical, neurotic and emotionally immature people = everywhere. Nasty, grasping, self-centred people = everywhere. Aggressive and violent people = everywhere. Liars and cheats = everywhere. Laziness = everywhere. Honesty, common sense, emotions in check, reliable, hard working people = few. They used to be the majority! |

Agreed, Ardy. Victims and enforcers the standard-bearers of this age! Short may it last. I see these people on a rope in a well, more interested by the bustle at the bottom than the light at the top - far more effort & no-one seems to be up there anyway so why bother? |
