A few days ago I noticed a slow leak in a tyre on my car. I went to a service station and queued behind another car to use the air pressure hose.

An older man had just started using the hose when I pulled up, he looked to be in his seventies. I saw him unhook the hose and take a kneel behind his right rear car tyre. He inflated the tyre, and attempted to stand up. He was having difficulty standing up under his own power, his knees shook and faltered.

I felt that I should get out of my car and help the man up, but I waited, I waited and watched while he slowly, painfully worked his way up to standing.

When he was up I exited my car and asked if he needed help, and with his permission pressurised the rest of his tyres.

I waited til he was standing to assist him because I didn't want to take his pride away from him, didn't want to make him feel enfeebled.

Women seem to be very free in expressing their emotions, crying easily and comforting freely.
It's different with men, publicly giving in to pain feels wrong, pride, status, control, something stands in the way of it, I don't know what. To comfort a crying man, feels awkward. The vulnerability is ... unmasculine?

Lao Tzu says to know the male but to keep to the female. Maybe it's about balance.

And sensitivity. Which can only be present when adequate balance is achieved.
Good call with the old guy. Getting old, goes hand in hand with encroaching loss of dignity, which is something the young are unable to appreciate. Often you can help most by doing nothing except being patient, and quietly encouraging.

"Squawk!" said the crow, and then made space.
