Profound secrets lie hidden in the unlikeliest of places. I've been a long-term user of antihistamines, on account of severe allergies to who-knows-what. A pill a day, for years. Suddenly - for various unconnected reasons - I decided to stop taking them, and see what happened. What a difference! I feel like I'm back inside my body, indeed back inside my life. I'd been vaguely aware of a certain disconnectedness, an out-of-touch-ness from living. I'd put this down to advancing age and precarious health, and sure, that was part of it. But antihistamines were playing a bigger part. Anything over-indulged in, creates problems. Even something so innocuous as antihistamines, are no exception. Meanwhile, the body is confused by a sudden lack of a familiar thing, and now struggles with withdrawal. Few things worth doing are ever comfortable. |

The day developed, and my wife took the ferry into town for raccoon food and other things. I felt supercharged! Couldn't stop talking, to anyone within range. Eager. Sharp. Witty. It continued all day, until the usual point at which the awfulness of awful people reestablished itself, and fatigue set in. Back home, struggling to unpack the car, in the dark and rain. Finally done, and collapse. An hour later and recovery is almost complete. Memories of the wild brush with humanity... Man blocks doorway to ferry washroom. I wait. And wait. "You want to use the washroom?" He moves, fractionally. "Would you mind not talking to me? I'm a misanthropist". "What's that? Like some kind of alcoholic?" And: Sushi at the exotic takeaway sushi bar... A woman shouts into her mobile phone in an insanely over-loud voice. I pick up the credit card machine, hold it to my ear, and shout: "I'M ON MY MOBILE PHONE SO I CAN SHOUT AS LOUD AS I WANT!" The staff roll about, laughing, and the woman looks daggers at me. My wife's eyes are wide, then she surrenders to helpless giggles. We made the best of it, as we always do. Buying raccoon food, by the hundredweight, my wife visits the washroom. I encounter a reasonably attractive woman at the checkout. "You'd better go ahead of me, it'll take ages to pay for all this stuff, and my wife is having a pee, so there goes an hour or two." "No that's fine," she answers. I look at her, smiling widely. "I don't really have a wife," I say. "That's my best line for breaking the ice with women I don't know." She starts to laugh. "It's a good one!" She finally goes ahead of me. My wife shows up. "I wasn't talking to that gorgeous woman," I say, in a loud voice. "I didn't say a word to her!" The woman turns around, wide-eyed, and laughs. So does my wife. The cashier ventures to my wife that she can't take me anywhere. We all laugh. "Now the bad news," I say. "We both love Donald Trump!" Well, it couldn't have ended well, could it? A gentle return to normal. But fun was had, the participants will remember it. The day got lived. I really must stop taking antihistamines more often. My goodness. What a terrible night. Dreams, nightmares, visits to the toilet. And extreme allergy attacks to follow. I even had a spontaneous nosebleed, which, for me, is unheard-of. And still I haven't taken an antihistamine. I am a glutton for punishment. |
