I've noticed that more than a couple of us here stutter. I was recently trying to join the US Army, and then afterwards the US Navy. Both recruiting officers noticed that I stutter, and told me not to talk too much at physical processing. I have never noticed that I stutter, perhaps everyone I've talked to simply never mentioned it, but when I asked my father he said I have always had a stutter. |

It can't be a very bad stutter if you didn't even know you were doing it. But, come to think of it, I've run into people that obviously stuttered, and didn't seem to realize it. Whatever you do, don't start getting worried about it. That's when it takes over, and that's a disaster. |

It isn't a particularly bad stutter, I was just wondering why stuttering seems to be a recurring theme around here. "Are you pregnant?", "Uh, I, No I don't think so", "Don't talk too much at meps" |

Stuttering is the affliction of misfits who yearn to fit. They can't. So they'll stutter for as long as they keep trying to fit. Spiritually-inclined people are always among the misfits. That's why they are spiritually-inclined. YinYang. Balance must be found. |

I figured that my mind was too fast for my vocal cords but crow has a much better explanation. I suppose that they could be the same thing, though. |

That's part of being a misfit. Too fast is abnormal, which is about the best thing you can say about it. Wanting to be like everybody else is an understandable position to take, but either it's possible or it isn't. When it isn't, enormous stress is triggered, and that's the basis of a locked-up voice. The cure is a ridiculously simple thing: Nobody can understand me, and that's just fine. I didn't want to be a superior being, but that's the way it is, and there's nothing to be done about it but to get on with being what I am. We'll move this thread to Communication, where it probably belongs. Edited by crow, Nov 7 2017, 01:05 PM.

Does stuttering manifest as something other than 'st-st-st-stuttering?' |

Sure it does. It's all about blocking; the sound gets blocked and simply can not get out. Stutterers expend huge amounts of physical energy trying to force their way past these blocks. Exhausting, and completely counterproductive. Different people have their worst blocks with different sounds or syllables, but as you say the 's' is usually the worst. Mine was often 'm', but some days it was almost every letter. |

Never had the issue thank goodness but an old captain of one of the rugby teams I played for was a bad stutterer. Met him after 40 years and no stutter but when I recalled it his wife noticed a slight stutter started. Strange thing... |
