Did anyone else see it yet? What do you think?

I loved it but I probably need some more time to process it, I just finished it ten seconds ago and I'm still shaking with excitement

edit: Oh and we called it on why Svetlana's pregnant again. High five.

edit 2: Sammi annoys the hell out of me too, like you wrote in the live discussion thread, Jessica. I doubt anything they do can make her, or any storyline involving her running around after Frank, likeable for me at this point, but we'll see.

The more I think about this episode, the more I like it. I loved the new sparkly happy Mickey and I loved Fiona genuinely trying to get her life back in shape and Kev and the babies and the little we saw of Deb and Carl. Plus, the Sims twins get so much cuter every year. I love that Liam has a bigger presence. Loved loved loved how Svetlana's relationship with Mickey and Ian has developed. I could watch them all be domestic all day.

Ian and V both broke my heart though - both seem to be struggling so much. I'm so not prepared for how either of their storylines are looking this year.

But yeah. Thoroughly enjoyed everything, except for Sammi - she annoys the crap out of me too :shake: and to a lesser extent Frank, who I don't like but at least feels as though he has some sort of place in the show. Sammi's storylines are always so awful and completely pointless urgh. I just can't see what purpose her presence serves in this show at all.

Mickey's "we're respectable now" really got to me, I loved that. I loved the whole atmosphere in the Milkovich household, what a bunch of domestic cuties. I feel like we should enjoy it while it lasts because it might crash and burn when Ian spirals further out of control.

And I agree, at least Frank has a sense of belonging, Sammi's just there.

I agree, we should absolutely enjoy it while it lasts. I hope we get more of their new super cute relationship before everything inevitably goes to hell.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy Mickey's version of 'respectable' haha. I still cannot get over the difference between season 5 Mickey and season 1 Mickey. It's doing things to my heart.

Loved this episode! Love the Ian/Mickey/Svetlana relationship even more. The smallest things made me smile, like Svetlana asking Ian how he wanted his eggs, Mickey asking why the baby's crying and about to change his diaper (he's concerned!), Svetlana kissing both of them on the cheek before she left. I'm just going to enjoy this while it lasts, because I do see it falling apart.

My initial sleep deprived thoughts

I had already posted when I first saw the episode but it was really late at the time and I wanted to add on to the Sammi topic lol.

I know that her storyline is probably meant to be sad and more interesting than I personally find it to be. I know that there are probably people who can relate, not necessarily to the acting out but to feeling that hole from not having a dad your entire life and suddenly finding him, actually, him suddenly finding you after you'd probably given up on knowing him. And just, expecting that childhood fantasy to become real, where your dad swoops in and saves the day and everything's better and he loves you the way no one else ever did. I know that watching a grown woman go through that process only to realize that things aren't better, you still have to be responsible for your own actions and your hardships because your dad honestly doesn't give a shit, is probably meant to be compelling. And I hope for some people it is.

But I don't know if it's how the issue has been presented, if it's because of the actress (I like Emily Bergl so I don't think so but who knows?) or if it's because of the blatant attempt to spell out the issue from episode one as if the writers realized people were going to be done with that storyline before it even began. Whatever it is, I'm not really interested in it right now. Maybe that'll change, but so far I just find it kind of embarassing and awkward. Actually, I think if we got to see more of Sammi when she's NOT acting out and she's feeling neglected or upset because maybe her half-siblings were right to not give a shit about him, that might go a long way in making the acting out scenes more palatable. It's a storyline we're clearly going to have to put up with, so hopefully there's some attempts to show her genuine emotions on it.

So much more that I want to discuss at length but I'll have to wait until later - I want to do some actual meta on Ian, Fiona, and Veronica at least and that's going to take more time than I have at the moment lol.

I rated this a 7, which felt a bit generous but 6 didn’t feel quite right either. This is stupidly long. Oops. Shameless just gives me a lot of feelings.

Frank – He stopped being funny, interesting and/or relevant about 3 seasons ago so, don’t care.

Sammi – I wanted to like her. I almost did last season. But she was so gross and pathetic in this episode that any goodwill I had for her is gone. She is fast moving into Frank’s Useless Lump category, which is a shame.

Sheila – I have never been particularly attached to the character but she is an absolute riot. I mostly love all her non-Frank scenes so I hope she gets a lot of those as the season progresses.

Svetlana – I’m not here for Ian & Svetlana as sister wives. Nope, nope, nope to Mickey’s harem. With how things were in 4.12 and some of the teasers I figured they would all be getting along but there was way too much friendliness going on there. Why is she helping Mickey get ready for work? Kissing him goodbye? Kissing Ian goodbye? Boundaries, people. Establish them. All of that is what I don’t want to see. I’m not sure yet what I want to see for Svetlana but I am interested in the development of her character, just more separate from Ian & Mickey. I really can’t see any reason for them to come together except where Yev is concerned.

Fiona – It looks like whatever was going on with her last season is mostly out of her system. She’s getting back to her old self. Still a bit shady but not catastrophically so. She still seems unsure of herself, like what to do about musician guy. I think that if she wants to sleep with all the boys this is the time to do it. She’s single. Flirting and hooking up is one of the few ways that she can have the freedom she should be experiencing at her age. So more power to her. Seeing her finally reach out to Ian almost brought tears to my eyes. I hope she takes a tougher stance in the future but this was nice to see.I want to see her working on her relationships with Debbie and Carl too. I have no firm opinion on her boss, yet. Seems a bit dull. Not sold on the chemistry. I’ll see.

Lip – I haven’t liked this guy since early season 1 so it was refreshing to see him do something other than strut around being an ass. Could’ve done without his random-ass friends who popped up out of the nowhere and are now stalking him in the middle of the night. WTF? Portraying his unease and feeling of being out of place could have been achieved without them. I don’t get him and Amanda. Are they supposed to be falling for each other? Maybe. Whatever. I feel apathetic about that relationship. I liked him defending Fiona to Frank. I liked him taking an interest in Ian’s mental health. I loved that hug between him and Ian. I didn’t even know I needed to see that until it happened. Last season’s hug seemed obligatory because they hadn’t seen each other in a long time but this was just really warm and like “hey bro, glad you’re here”. Gave me the warm n’ fuzzies.

Ian – I was mostly spoiled for the stuff that happened with him in this episode but I still had a couple of surprises. I didn’t expect him to be as miserable as he was before, during and after his hook-ups. I am both relieved and sad about that. I have never had a problem with DaddyIan, in theory, but I was a bit uncomfortable seeing it play out and I’m not sure why yet. In general, I’m happy with where he and Mickey are as an out couple and how they relate to each other around their families. Their rough-housing in bed was cute-ish. But I’m watching Shameless not Downton Abbey or some other fluffy, family show. This is supposed to be gritty and pushing the boundaries. Give me a mature sex scene or don’t bother. It started off great with both of them being adorable af but it ultimately left me a bit cold. I think Ian knows that he’s not fine but I suspect acknowledging it terrifies him because... Monica.

Mickey – I was irrationally worried about him just walking around showing his face to the people he’s stealing from. Seeing him show concern for a crying Yev warmed my heart. I knew he’d come around. Not that he was obligated to but it’s nice that he did. He was giddy. There’s no other word for it. Mickey is so giddy over Ian. He just lights up around him. Like he can’t help himself. Even when half asleep. It’s too cute. Not looking forward to seeing that bubble burst. I think he also knows that Ian is not fine. He could go either way at this point; start to work towards getting Ian to a doctor or go deeper into denial. I’m not surprised that he is so open about his relationship with Ian. I think once he liberated himself from under Terry’s thumb he took that freedom and ran with it. I am surprised that he speaks so openly about his boyfriend’s sex drive. I shouldn’t be though, not after his magnificent rant in 4.11.

Debbie – She needs new friends. I can’t wait to catch up more with her and watch her continued struggles with growing up. I want her and Fiona to grow closer. Debbie has the worst choice in confidants. Her friends are the worst, just at life in general. Sammi – see above. And Mandy, love her but her world view is understandably messed up. So Debbie really needs a mother, a sister and a friend in Fiona. Which is near impossible to navigate but I’d like to see Fiona try.

Carl - … I feel like he’s going to make me very sad this season. Could someone please pay attention to this poor kid! He’s the craziest of the lot yet everyone just expects him to raise himself.

Liam – he’s just a cutie pie.

V (& Kev) – I am not impressed with her behaviour in this episode. She came across as a spoilt brat. She’s surprised that being parents to two babies is stressful and will change things? I’m not even entirely sure what she was complaining about. Was it the lack of sex? If so, I’m fine with that as a source of conflict. Kev & V have only had a few hiccups and they were mostly resolved within an episode so they are due an angsty, long-term storyline. However, I am not fine with her neglecting or resenting her babies because of it. I hope this was just a blip because one episode of it was trying enough. Anyway, I have a lot of love for V which is why I want her to get her act together. I am looking forward to seeing what Kev & V in crisis mode looks like. As long as they’re endgame, of course.

I actually really liked this episode though it may just be because Shameless is finally back. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Fiona's diner scenes. I think it is great that she has some more girl friends, especially that waitress, Jackie I think her name was. I like Sean so far but I really hope that he just stays as Fiona's friend. I am so curious about Angela and what she is doing. I agree with whoever said she is doing this for Jimmy, though he may not be aware of it. I was a little surprised by Veronica's attitude but then I remembered how she was with Ethel and how she joked about dropping off Liam when he was smelly and noisy, parenting comes less naturally to her than it does to Kev (who was fantastic in this episode, especially with Ian). Its obvious she cares about her daughters and I think she is just disappointed in herself. I think that working at the bar will do good for her, at least for now. As for Sammi, I never hated her like many people did but I understand this episode she was a bit annoying. I really hope she interacts more with the Gallagher siblings. Sheila was very funny in this episode and I actually like her and Frank's dynamic as a couple. The Mickey and Ian scenes were so cute and I am glad that we see that Ian is uncomfortable with what he is doing, that is something. I am not sure what to think about Svetlana, on one hand I do like her new found friendship with Mickey and more so Ian, but it does seem sudden, though that may just be because several months have past. Anyway I am excited to see more with Debbie and Carl (I think that they are purposefully not paying much attention to him now so when he gets in trouble later it will hit harder). I hope this will be a good season!

I'm sad to see cracks in Kevin and Veronica's relationship, but like you said above I wasn't that surprised at Veronica's behavior either. In one way I'm enjoying it, because usually it's the father who gets frustrated with the lack of sex and the changing relationship after they've had kids and the mother who only cares about the children. It's a nice shift imo and an interesting perspective to explore. I think they'll be fine eventually, they just need to find a new rhythm that works for everyone involved.
