Before hopping into Shattered Universe, we need to cover how most people generally behave and act towards each other.

First, Shattered Universe takes place in a time period where you can't trust anyone, most people are scumbags only out for themselves.
Heroics are a thing of the past, people going out of their way to help others is not common practice.
It's a foreign thing to be a good guy, prejudice is common, even in Equalist society.
Most social tabbos that we have in our own time don't exist in Shattered Universe.
(Cursing, Racism, Homosexuality, Bisexuality, Being an Asshole, Drugs, Sex)
Most people keep to themselves, so having an extremely out reaching character
will most likely garner strange looks and even suspicion rather then respect and trust.

The more canon and appropriate way to carry yourself in Shattered Universe is to be cautious.
There's nothing wrong with being a good guy, but don't
introduce yourself as such. Basically, don't act like this is a game of DnD.
(Introducing yourself in a way that a stereotypical hero might, such as
"Hi, my name is Mark Barry, I'm a dastardly rogue who doesn't respect the law and helps any good looking damsel in distress, or if the price is just right"
People don't act that way in any part of the galaxy, don't do it.
