The year is Universal Century 0089. Almost a century ago humanity finally put aside their differences and united under a banner of peace that was to last the ages. That peace was through the Earth Federation, bringing together the resources and resourcefulness of all of humanity under one banner began the grandest undertaking in human history: the colonization of the Earth Sphere.

There were, of course, hiccups in the system but none that could not be overlooked by the tremendous achievements of the new government. In fifty years the vast majority of humanity's eleven billion had migrated to tremendous orbiting space colonies. Some complained that only Earth's elite had been allowed to remain on the planet, though these complaints would come to nothing until a man known as Zeon Zum Deikun came into the light.

Emerging in Side Three, Zeon Zum Deikun believed that the time for humanity to leave the cradle of the Earth had come. It was time for humanity to stand on its own in space and leave the Earth in peace. The idea was not necessarily original, but Zeon Zum Deikun brought a greater weight to the table due to his election as the premier of Side 3, the colony cluster tucked behind the moon at Lagrange Point 2.

Under the guidance of Zeon Deikun, the colonies of Side Three formed the first military beyond the control of the Earth Federation in over fifty years and began to make overtures towards independence. The Earth Federation would respond with sanctions against the Zeon Republic, though these brought about little result.

Following Zeon Deikun's death under questionable circumstances, his former advisor whom had fallen from favour, Degwin Sodo Zabi would rise to power in his stead. Under the leadership of Degwin Zabi and his son Gihren, the Zeon Republic would find itself re-branded the Principality of Zeon. Brimming with confidence in a new generation of weapons called "mobile suits," the Principality and Earth Federation charged irrevocably towards war. Officially the Principality was launching its war for the cause of independence from the Earth Federation; unofficially, Gihren Zabi had designs for the entire human race.

January 3, 0079 was the first day of what would eventually become known as the One Year War. The One Year War was the single largest and most devastating conflict in human history, in both the number of military casualties, civilian deaths, and devastation across the entire Earth Sphere. It began with the Principality of Zeon launching well coordinated surprise attacks against the Earth Federation controlled Sides. During the fierce fighting of the first month of the war, weapons of mass destruction were used indiscriminately, with Zeon forces deploying G3 Nerve Gas in inhabited colonies, attempting a colony drop against the EFF's headquarters at Jaburo during Operation British, and both sides using nuclear weapons during the Battle of Loum. During this period of fighting the civilian and military casualties totalled almost half of the entire human race. After this, both parties agreed to sign the Antarctic Treaty which, among other things, forbid the use of weapons of mass destruction.

With the Earth Federation Space Forces devastated, Zeon pressed its advantage by staging an invasion of Earth, dropping mobile suit forces onto the planet during several operations in March of UC 0079. This began a long stalemate period between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, with the Earth Federation slowly giving ground until the Zeon had control over approximately two thirds of Earth's surface. In September, the Earth Federation's V Project was scheduled to undergo secret testing in Side 7, but was discovered by Zeon forces under the command of Char Aznable.

From October onward, the war escalated as the Earth Federation began to field its own mobile suits and the Principality of Zeon scrambled to counter the new threat. The war's climax came in the month of November, beginning with the Federation's grand assault upon Zeon's Odessa mining base and ending with Zeon's capture of the Federation's headquarters at Jaburo.

After suffering tremendous losses at both Odessa and Jaburo, the Federation capitulated to the Principality, signing a peace treaty in December, 0079. The next three years would see the Principality strengthening its grip upon the entire Earth Sphere, save one colony side at L4.

Side Six, better known as the Riah Republic, had been borne out of the shadow of Zeon's own overtures towards independence. Unlike Zeon, Riah had achieved its independence peacefully before the outbreak of war and had remained the one neutral party in the entire Earth Sphere throughout the war. After the collapse of the Federation at the end of the war, Riah ended up holding a tremendous amount of former Federation officers and technology which they would use to build up their own military strength.

Due to their own weakness following the war, Gihren maintained that he held no designs upon fellow spacenoids; instead he focused his attention upon ruling his newly conquered lands and repairing the damage the war had done. Few believed he would maintain that stance with Riah, indeed many suspected he was simply going to use the Earth's tremendous resources to rebuild Zeon's war machine before turning it upon the Riah Republic.

One enormous flaw in his plans, however, arose in late UC 0083. Following meticulous planning and massive coordination between remnant Federation forces in space, Zeon was dealt a tremendous blow during their naval review at the Solomon asteroid. Two thirds of the Zeon fleet was obliterated in the span of three days and Zeon's main base and source of resources on Earth, Odessa, was erased by millions of tonnes of colony falling to Earth.

Desperate to maintain his grip on power, Gihren responds harshly. The Chimera Corps is organized, tailored to be an elite counter-insurgency group specifically empowered to hunt down and eradicate remnant Federation fighters as well as any challengers to the power of Zeon. Essentially a special operations force designed to operate outside the confines of military law and oversight, the Chimera Corps would become synonymous with rule through fear.

Six years have passed since the destruction of Zeon's fleet at Solomon and the colony drop on Odessa. Federation remnants have been hunted to near extinction while Zeon's power has once again swelled with the addition of new ships, men, and mobile suits. Only a meagre band of Federation remnants calling themselves the Titans seems able to stand in the path of Gihren Zabi's total domination of the human race. Or so it would seem.
